I live in Wisconsin and adopted 5 BLM horses over the last 15 years. There are actually thousands of people who would like to adopt wild horses here in the East but the BLM won't make them accessible. Sure we get a few now and then but if we had year round access to adopt like people in the west, we'd adopt thousands more. There is only one adoption facility east of the Mississippi River. It holds 300 horses for half the US. Western facilities hold more like 15,000 horses that can be adopted. We need more adoption facilities in the East. Tell your legislators to open adoption facilities in eastern states and we can take those horses off your land and give them good homes. We have good pastures here and a lot of demand for the wild ones.

The B.L.M makes it extremely difficult to adopt a horse. You have to have a 6ft high enclosure. And many other requirements before you can adopt 5 ft high for a foal. So even if you have land and have it completely fenced in. And your horses are perfectly fine in your fenced-in meadow, but to adopt a wild horse, you have to refence it up to You have to have a 400 square feet enclosure per horse. Many people are willing to adopt a mustang, but these adoption rules are such that people can not refence their entire acres. People in cities see wild horses as part of the American West. However, improper management by the B.L.M. who are in charge of these horses. This means that due to overpopulation and scarcity of food, especially in the winter months. Leads to horses dying due to starvation. A horse at minimum needs 25 lbs of hay per day. What people don't understand is that in the winter, they need more to keep up their body temperature. Even though wild horses are hardy to cold temperatures, people don't realize that many of these horses live in the mountains, and the grass gets covered by deep snow. The B.L.M. should be feeding these horses supplemental hay. But they don't do this enough. This leads to horses dying 0 agonizing slow death due to starvation. In the spring, it leads to foals dying because the mare does not have enough milk. This is the harsh truth of not gelding young stallions. The wild horses like the Elk in yellow stone. Have no natural apex Predators to keep their numbers àt a healthy level a herd of horses can easily stomp a mountain lion or cayoťe to death. People are also against the round-ups done by the B.L.M. but they are necessary to keep the herds healthy. Anybody who has ever owned a horse knows they need to be vaccinated, and vet checked dewormed. Also, during the round ups, the overall health of a herd is assest. Foals that are weaned are taken to adoption pens, and other horses that are deemed adoptable are separated. People who have little to no understanding of horses do not realize that to let thè wild horse population grow and grow without intervention are in the long run dooming the wild horses to agonizing death by starvation or dehydration. However, it's hard to make people who have never owned a horse. Understand the dire situation of the overpopulation of the wild horse.

It will always be a sensitive issue but wild horses are exactly that horses allowed to go wild, or feral, they are not native fauna. As such they have to be managed or the chaos will continue and the horses and native fauna will continue to suffer. The do nothing option is not a humane or sustainable option. Beyond the calculated wild horse number the rest should be harvested as a commodity and utilized, those that are unsuitable for rehoming can be utilized as protein. The reduction of number should be based on removing the old, weak and poor confirmation, leaving the higher quality horses with the best genetics. This will lead to a higher quality horse that will be more desireable for rehoming, increasing rather than reducing long term sustainability of wild horses management. If this is not done major die offs will occur after prolonged suffering and that is not humane.

@InOppositiontotheNewWorldOrder Жыл бұрын
At 5:00 in, the guy keeps saying his "allotment". What that really means is he is permitted to raise his livestock on public land for a certain period. So you and I are funding the raising of his livestock for that portion of the year, yet when we go to purchase said meat, we do NOT receive a discount. Most farmers and ranchers don't live near public lands, and have to pay 100% of the feed bill. Yet those whom do live close charge the same price. Therein, is the real source of the issue. These public land users want the horses (and eventually the wildlife) off of the land, so they can expand their operation. An operation that you fund twice.

They are feral horses, not really a native species here. True that horses originally evolved in North America, beginning way back in the Eocene, horses have a long, complex evolution and those ancient, native horses are long extinct, but these are domestic horses of European origin, bred by human beings. They are an introduced species, like English House Sparrows, Rock Doves, ( common city pigeons) and Norway Rats.

Take note from the Mongolian herdsmen and Native Americans. Nurture first the dirt you graze on and rotate the cattle appropriately. Secondly solidify the mustang breed with a registry and stud book, putting it in the hands of ranchers AND the tribes. Thirdly it's not inhumane to eat under preformers. Fourthly developed a natural/respectful relationship with wolves and understand that they will help you cull the weak, sick or injured, thus helping you to develop a better breed of whatever beast you're raising. Final note. Remember the bison, his numbers were great and the land flourished with him.

@et6036 Жыл бұрын
horses crop grass to the ground when they eat, which kills the grass. It's true that cows can pull grass out of the ground, but that's usually mismanagement. cows want the tops of the grass because it has the most sugar from the sun. horses want protein and will pick out highly desirable forage and graze it down to the top of the soil until it desiccates, even when other good grass is standing knee-high nearby.

The american timber wolf is extinct. Canadian grey wolf cannot take its place in the western range, and the mexican gray wolf doesn't have the same prey. But wild predators should absolutely be reintroduced. The US government reimburses farmers for any cow lost to wolves, if they can prove it. I'm less familiar with those regulations, but good dogs and playing 'wolf radio'- pre-recorded wolf howls that wolves use to mark territories- will keep wolves out of your herds. Individual problem animals that are habituated to prey on livestock may be killed by ranchers anyways.

they need to geld all but 2 or 3 stallions per state
@capiglines5982 жыл бұрын
Sorry but that simply will not work. First, you'd have a hard time capturing all the rest of the stallions, there are areas where no one can find the horses at all (hills, canyons, etc). Secondly, by reducing the number of stallions drastically, you eliminate any genetic diversity, start having genetic problems in the foals that are born. And, of course, 1 stallion can breed a WHOLE LOT of mares -- you're really NOT going to reduce the number of foals born, just destroy their diversity and genetic health - increasing deaths by genetic defects, I suppose. Spaying mares has proven to be somewhat beneficial; darting with PZP or other hormone birth control has limited effectiveness, as noted in the video -- the need a booster, and finding the same mares again is a crap shoot. What we NEED to do is keep activists out of the picture, allow the BLM to do their jobs, and manage the horses appropriately, and no doubt update the bill since the numbers are completely skewed now. Getting information out about BLM adoptions and getting these horses adopted helps -- my 22-yo BLM mare is happy as can be in her pasture! Sensitive subject and pulls at LOTS of heartstrings...
