Virg., I can't thank you enough for what you've done with the Ruination CD! It is so fresh and inspiring to learn your thought processes. I've been through a colon resection & ileostomy reversal this summer, and learning to comprehend your work is an immense help in the healing process! You're helping me to stay inspired and learn to play again! Thank you for keeping Allan's spirit alive in your music and for helping me see it can be done, as I turn 60 this year! You never age out!!!

Typically when ever I’ve ever read or heard comments referring to any drummer as “The greatest “ or “the best “ which one might typically read and hear from drummer fans of Rock drummers ie “Neil Peart: Ringo star John Bonham, or jazz legend Buddy Rich, I say to myself these over imposing, small minded, small town, musically limited 100% of the time caucasian Americans thinking that the way they see hear and experience the world should be taken as fact. All that to say when ever I’ve heard or seen this Australian born and raised drummer Virgil Donati play drums, I don’t mind so much hearing over top comments because they are well deserved. Not that there are not hundreds of drummers that could easily be put in a category as arguably among the top ten greatest of all time like count Bassie big band drummer Sonny Payne , or Purto Rican born Afro Cuban drummer” Horacio el negro Hernandez “ or Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, or Sonny Emory ( from Atlanta Georgia ) or NJ born drummer extraordinaire Rodney Holmes who played with Santana and the Brecker Brothers reunion ( mid 90s ) before age 30. All that to say it’s only the Rock fan drummers who are rabid, and over the top exaggerators who would typically insist that there idea of who’s the best is final and factual.
@TacoCrisma Жыл бұрын
I think there’s top musicians in each style of drumming. I’d say purdie, Gadd, or Porcaro are best in pocket for the song and prolific careers. Guys like Virgil, weckl, vinnie, Cobham, etc are best at technical drumming. Matt Gartska, Elliot Hoffman, and Thomas haake are some of the best at prog metal drumming. Billy kilson is one of the kings of swing/bop but I’d put Omar hakim solidly there too. Guys like eric moore, tony royster, Brian fraiser moore, larnell lewis, Dennis chambers, are some of the absolute best all around drummers out there. Etc. Also Horacio’s left foot clave is out of this world

Virgil, did you intentionaly mute the hit of the kick drum at 0:35 ??
@DamZZmaD4 жыл бұрын
No... 😉 Virgil often play crash accents only without bass drum or snare on first measures times 😁 It is one of his signature style... Listen to his LP "In This Life", he make this on all songs 😅 Virgil don't need to make a bass drum sound when he play a crash. I don't like to say this but... all drummers could recognize he stays technically intouchable in drums Galaxy... He is really not my favourite drummer artistically but he is technically the best of the best. Most of pro drummers can't reproduce like he plays... And he plays piano too... UNTOUCHABLE VIRGIL...

@@DamZZmaD yess I know its a signature of him, but see it carefuly, he hits the kick drum in this case, but seems he mute it in post
