A playthrough of Interplay's 1992 cinematic action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Out of this World.
For those of you not in North America, it was called Another World in Europe and Outer World in Japan.
Out of this World was a pretty eye-opening game when it first released on the Amiga in 1991, doing things that were generally thought impossible at the time. Instead of then standard 2D graphics, OotW used bitmaps only for the backgrounds, and all of the animated objects are 3D, rendered in real-time with vectors and animated using rotoscoping techniques (as was seen in Mechner games like Prince of Persia and The Last Express). Though it looks a bit crude compared to modern stuff, full-screen cinematics in 3D running at a reasonably fast framerate were unheard of, and it was breathtaking in action. It still looks awfully good largely thanks to the strength and consistency of the art design.
It plays well too. The controls are very similar to Prince of Persia (as well as Ootw's spiritual successors Flashback and Heart of Darkness), in that they're extremely smooth and movements are well articulated, though to someone not familiar with this style, they might seem unresponsive or laggy. It doesn't take much time to adapt, though.
I should also mention that it's quite difficult. Sure, it's quick to run through like I do here in no time if you know it by heart, but as a kid I spent weeks playing and figuring stuff out before I got to the end. It's just as much a puzzle game as it is an action one, and the combo suits it well. It was critically acclaimed when it was new, and it's seen a number of releases and rereleases over the years, but the core game endures pretty well.
Even more impressive than the PC versions at the time (would you believe it came on a single floppy? And the Dos version only required 640k of memory!) was the 16-bit console ports. Granted, the SNES version's frame rate wasn't as smooth and you had fairly frequent load times, but this was faithfully smashed onto a 8mbit cartridge for a console with a fraction of the power that the target computers ran it with.
It's an acquired taste (duh, it's French), but this early 90s technological, cinematic tour-de-force is still an impressive piece of work that everyone should experience at least once.

I remember being absolutely stunned by the graphics in this game. Some of the rotoscoping looks awkward as far as the art style, but the animation is silky smooth and I think that's what was so impressive about it. The game play left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Not really a fan of the trial and error style of play these kind of games went for, but I can totally see the appeal. I just feel like a lot of care, attention to detail and passion went into developing this and it shows in the final build. I feel like this game inspired the first couple of Oddworld games.

Glad the 42 years-old me just watched this. I never did finish the game back then, and I think I rented it maybe 2 times rather than just one. Here's the fun part though, I clearly remember making it to the "arena" part with the tank vehicle thing, but I never for the life of me figured out what to do there and the game just ended there for me, always. I never actually how so close to the end of the game I was lol. Anyway, thanks for this, brings me back good memories. The atmosphere and the sense of being 'lost' in an alien world is very well done for a SNES game, very few on the system had a similar atmosphere for me, save for the likes of Super Metroid and Link to the Past.

@@THEREALGAMEMASTER-gz5xg holy crap, this was my comment a year ago. 😂 Anyway yes I've played ghouls n ghosts.. But what I was talking about is in terms of mobility and limitations and play styles . Ghouls and ghosts is a fast paced platformer hence to why you have a character who can jump, double jump, shoot projectiles at an instant. Yes granted it's a very difficult game, but the still style is different. Out of this world is slower paced. Your character has more realistic parameters when in comes to mobility. Your weapon can run out of ammo. You have to constantly slow yourself down to plan your next move. It's also not a typical side scroller like GnG. You have to explore maps and back track a lot as opposed to just scrolling right. (There is a spin-off game from GnG called Demon's Crest in which you use Firebrand the demon from GnG. One of my top 5 SNES games. I suggest you check it out. It's really fun.)

Kind of reminds me of Kaizo games where it's a puzzle of finding out what the situation/devs asks you to do in what specific order to proceed. Although it does not allow any kind of flexibility in how you solve it, you do funnily enough feel immersed in becoming that protagonist who avoids doom by a small margin. Not a single line of dialogue spoken to each other but I know I can trust that big guy to help me out every time. Great duo

Does anyone know if the music starting at 7:02 is specific to this port of the game? I recently picked up the 20th Anniversary version and no matter what music/sound option i go with, this awesome dramatic track is absent

For a real treat play this game on the Sega CD. It looks and sounds better plus you get an extra game. Other than that this looks great on the SNES.

Funny how Nintendo censor alien girl butt crack but leave the violence intact

The SNES version is far superior to all other versions, even the 20th Anniversary edition.

@@oele Better than all of them. The reason I prefer it is because the SNES slowdown makes it more cinematic and it's got the amazing music when action occurs, no other version that I've seen has that music in it.

Idk if gameplay wise if its the best port, but it does have my favorite version of the soundtrack. The piano work is sublime and perfectly suited to the atmosphere

Was mind-blowing for a console-only kid. Everyone says how cryptic and difficult, but we managed to beat it as a Blockbuster rental over a weekend with no internet or guides, with trial and error.
