Love this podcast. I'm from Ireland and got into watching rugby league in the past 2-3 years, and this podcast has certainly helped in me getting a better understanding of the game..

Ewan Farrell it’s funny, in Australia league is way way bigger than Union. But in Ireland league is non-existent. Would be cool if the Irish started playing league

@@69handy yeah I find it strange. Irish culture has a lot more in common with the working class nature of league, but it's never taken off. The union people in Ireland are wealthy so they keep the game well funded and have a strong influence in the media. I love watching the NRL too, my sister actually introduced me to the game when she moved to Sydney..

Same here. I'm an Irishman who got into rugby league a few years back, partly due to the documentary on big Sammy Burgess. I think part of the issue is that there's already a strong sporting culture in many codes when you include football, rugby union and GAA. I'd love to see league grow in Ireland though.

X12 that’s unreal to hear. As much as I love origin I’d like to see the same level of international competitiveness in league that union has. France used to play then the government fucked league over in the 50’s and 60’s. Do you guys get to watch much or just keep up to date via highlights and stuff?

Ewan Farrell how good, what do you like more in league compared to union?

Awesome podcast. One of the best ever. As a fan of both codes it's amazing to think he played for both national teams. Sad to think Mike Ford a previous Leaguie wouldn't support Sam during those times. I follow both NRL and SL extensively.

Me too bro and I've followed league for like 10 years. It's growing very slowly internationally as more countries like Brazil, El Salvador, Nigeria, Ghana, Camaroon, Vietnam, Jamaica, etc are playing the sport. This was years after league was banned in the military until 1995 which prevented the sport from growing globally.

As someone with a very similar accent to sam and also having Australian friends i can really pick out the Aussie in his accent now, pretty funny how noticeable it is

Bit odd he went over as a grown man and is speaking like that? I moved to Australia when I was 12 and my accent has changed but I was 12

Sad day when this guy retired. One of the last genuine standover men/enforcers in the game. So much aggression, was an inspiration to watch. For mine, easily the best forward of the decade. Even as an aussie watching, I’ll never forget his performance in a losing side in the 2013 WC semi final. Was superhuman.

Sam lost a lot of his accent living in Australia for all those years. In some words he says it actually sounds more Australian than a Yorkshire accent.

Burgess despite everything still had no discipline in defence and cost a lot of games by being sent off and penalised! I would leave him out of any top 13 in any era for sure.
