Outback adventure with Sigma's 60-600mm Telephoto Zoom

I personally chose few years ago to leave my Canon full frame telephoto gear for m43 gear, due to gain in weight/size, but I opted for top high quality lenses, like the Leica 200mm F2.8 (instead of the more amateur Leica 100-400mm), and I have no regret. I lost a little on bokeh rendering compared to my old Canon 600mm F4 L IS II of course, but I gain a lot concerning the ease of use and the portability (and sharpness are comparable). Here this Sigma 60-600mm is a compromise, but so you never have the great rendering a telephoto prime lens can give you on full frame, neither the portability of m43 gear. You're in between... There is no perfect choice :) I would love to see Panasonic invest more in ambitious telephoto lenses for m43 and full frame.

Great review, I've been looking at this lens. Thanks for the comparison with the G9. How do you think it would compare with the G9 Mark II and the 100-400?

Tough call. I think the full-frame is just that little bit more responsive overall. I've been road testing the G9II with 100-400mm pretty hard on my last trip though, and fine tuning the AF setup. I still need to run a few more tests to be fully confident in my assessment. The G9II is soooooo much more nimble to work with, and to travel with. So that's a huge advantage. But the S5II has a lot more light to work with when you stick the 60-600mm onto it, so that's a genuine advantage. The 60-600mm is a luxury basically :)

This is a timely video for me, as I mull whether to upgrade my lenses for my G9 (and likely go down the route of the G9 II) or start into FF. Some great images and sightings you had over this past year, and I'm pleased to hear that the S5 II served you well in capturing them. The new Sigma 500 5.6 will be an interesting match for the S5 II

Dude don't tempt me! The S5ii is a crazy price in the UK right now, have to keep telling myself that 10fps isn't enough (electronic being 30fps is of no use due to the rolling shutter)
