Outboard motor remote steering

Designed to steer a smaller auxiliary outboard, independent of the main motor from anywhere on the boat with a small wireless remote. Can be disconnected and connect a standard steering link to the main outboard and resume steering with the wheel. Ideal when trolling at 1-2kts

This is a great idea and a lot cheaper than a Panther but what happens when a wave comes over the transom? That actuator is definitely not waterproof. There are some waterproof actuators but they run about $280. And, since I'm playing devil's advocate, if someone still wanted helm steering of the kicker you would have to disconnect the actuator and hook up the tie bar. Not a big deal but still kind of a pain. Keep working on this idea though. Thanks!

SuperProhibited I made the small arm from parts I had lying around at home, they are a 8mm ball & socket joint off a ride-on lawnmower Hope that helps.

Nice ,working with the same units can not make the relay switching from a remote 4x4 winch switch work , can you please provide the relay and how you connected to the motor ,Thanks

tony triassi the wireless 4x4 module then switches 2x small crossover (12v x 5A ) relays to change/reverse the polarity on the actuator

+Nenad Knežev. I purchased the Linear Actuator Motor off Ebay, they come in different lengths, ie, DC12V 24V 750N 50mm 100mm 200mm 300mm 600mm. and made up relay switching from a remote 4x4 winch switch. Hope that helps.

Ok, this very cool is the engine body water proof? Have you or anyone looked at hooking this up to a mapping app on a cell phone? I see similar stuff for the electric trolling motors. Given what you did here I bet we could figure out how to do that other side. I do mobile map programming, so would love to give this a try.

I've been using the unit for about two years, and I haven't had any problems when it gets wet, but saying that I only run the boat in a fresh water lake. I haven't really thought about connecting it up to a GPS/ mapping program, but can't see any problem doing so. It would be the same as the servo motor on a autohelm using a fluxgate compass connected to a GPS plotter. I use it when I've got the trolling line out the back, I'm sitting back with a beer and maybe need to move the boat track over a few degrees, of course with minimal effort...

Matthew Adams I only made it for my own personal use, and have posted it to show people how it runs. it won't suit all conditions, especially windy days, but fine calm days relax with a beer is fine. I only built it for fun, something to try out .. that's all.

Its a fresh water, calm day only unit for sure but that honestly is about as fast as the old remote troll we had. All the lakes we are on that thing in the right hands would do great.
