Hey David, I have to say that your presentation of open CPN is by far the best I've seen yet! Thanks for doing it.

Absolutely the best explanation for using Open CPN; you have the personality to relate to viewers sans being overly aggressive...I like that. Waiting for your next video on plug- ins. Cheers. The Mossback Sailor.

Looking forward to part 3. Any thought to documenting your OpenCPN "best practices"?

I'm trying to sprinkle some of my 'best practices' throughout these videos (hence my harping on properly naming routes and waypoints! 😆) but I may do a favorite tips and tricks type video when I've reached the end of the OpenCPN series.

Excellent episode. You really inspired us with an excellent presentation and well-thought-out topics to cover. Just about the right length also. I am trying it on my Raspberry PI 4, and these parts from you have helped me enormously to get started. Thanks, David, and Cheers.

It's an amazing explanation but I've got a doubt. Can I change longitude and latitude from the route page? I mean make correction on degrees.

Great video. Is it possible to export a route or waypoint to a plotter with wireless capability, without using an SD, I.e. wirelessly using wifi or blue tooth ?

I noticed that you went over land while creating your route. Opencpn doesn't appear to automatically navigate you around it. Is that correct? I've been trying Savvy Navvy which does that. Nice feature.

I run trot lines at night in old and lost river in a mud boat (pro-drive) in Baytown TX. I know I will make the same run several times in a season. So before the season starts I will go out in the daytime and drive as close to the bank as I feel would be safe in the worst conditions and save that track. Then I make another run on the deep side of the river making sure not to have any solid object between this new line and the bank line I made early and save this track. Now all I got to do is at night is keep my route between the two safety runs I have saved.

Thank you, David. Well done. Question: Can other sailing vessels share their way points? Or a database that can be searched?
@OutChasingStars
@OutChasingStars 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! As long as the other vessel is sharing way points that are in a GPX format, you can import them into OpenCPN. They would need to save the waypoint file to a USB drive or something (even email!) that you can use to get on your computer. As for a searchable database, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Other vessels can export multiple waypoints, and you can import multiple waypoints at once into OpenCPN. The only real searching functionality I've come across in OpenCPN is that 'filter' tool in the waypoint manager. That's why I always try to use the same naming convention for my waypoints so it's much easier to search them.

I really enjoyed your OpenCPN videos, you said you had plans for additional videos on OpenCPN? Do you still plan on making them? I for one would like to see more advanced features, tips and tricks if you are inclined. I know the subject matter is not going to get millions of views but they are greatly appreciated by us that are interested. Thank You

Thanks! We’re really glad you enjoy these types of videos. Our motivation isn’t really to get millions of views, but more to share the knowledge we’ve learned throughout our journeys. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to do more of these videos in the future, but free time is limited at the moment as we’re working on our refit, making videos of the refit and have a few other big projects in the works as well.

Thanks for these videos David, A question probably for the first video... or maybe I missed it. How do you find maps for places not shown in the catalog? for example St Martin, Grenada or the Pacific?
@OutChasingStars
@OutChasingStars 2 жыл бұрын
There is a website (o-charts.org/) where you can buy charts for large parts of the world. But the easy availability of charts is one drawback of OpenCPN for sure.
