Woah look at that! The night I finished this video a patch happens to come around. Luckily it doesn't really negate anything that I said in this video other than that I'll probably do a quick 1.09 breakdown before that Custom Arena video, especially since it and Seamless will need a sec to get updated.

This video is inspiring and as a fellow Souls lover I'm grateful for all your efforts! Also, since I don't see this feedback anywhere else; one of the changes I'd like to see is i-frames on phantom finger invasion respawn. Time to use even one skill, one buff, or freely briefly run for cover, means a lot spawning in against a gank. And, importantly, *make it spawn me in a new location each time unless there's nowhere new to go*. It's, I guess, embarrassing? To spawn in, use a finger to save time, and wind up in the same spot having wasted said time. I'd like to not feel punished for attempting to use this item. Can I get your thoughts on this change?

Problem is I've run into some invaders who will run away and will actually AFK for twenty minutes at a time somewhere only to come back, shoot you in the back then AFK again. I can't leave the game until I get rid of him, I can't dedicate any time trying to get rid of him while we're getting consecutive invasions and so we're left with either pulling the plug so we can leave, playing exclusively in areas with boss fogs so we can send him home or give them the satisfaction of the win. Do we just give invaders an upper limit of 20-30 minutes to finish the invasion before automatically being sent home? There are always going to be players on both sides of the community that will go to unbelievable lengths to be toxic.
@LeigFTW Жыл бұрын
@@viktoriyaserebryakov2755 One solution to that problem would be to add an option in the taunters tongue to enable solo invasions like in ds3 with a much longer cooldown. That way you don’t get constant invasions and even if the invader is a troll you can always gank him in 3v1. There’s still an option to have multiple invaders come in and you can have all the fixes to the taunters tongue and it solves the problem you found by allowing the host to avoid situations like that when using the taunters tongue.

@@LeigFTW I like the constant invasions though. I just don't like it when one of them plays like a b*tch. Invaders are suppose to chase down hosts but as the game stands, there is nothing compelling the invader to actually do so. The same kind of applies in reverse. There is nothing compelling the host to move forward. With the game being a linear design, the host had to run a gauntlet playing cat and mouse with the invader using the environment to his advantage. Stop the host before he reaches the finish line. I've been really interested in an "objective balance rating" since DS3. It's just such an engaging analysis problem. I entered souls coming from Skyrim, so the concept of spacing and timing was so much more fluid and dynamic and "qualitative" than the blunt "RPG stat DPS race" of Skyrim. It's just way more interesting to analyze. Regardless of what formula is chosen to measure the score of a build, it should be possible to plug that in a structured database and query and browse builds to find optimal setups and degenerate pieces. It could help discover untapped niches. While the fluid nature of souls combat is way more difficult to quantify than a simple DPS race, I do believe it is possible with enough raw data and practical insight.

Two concerns of sorts I have with what you talked about in terms of your philosophy. Specifically the main goal being to work towards general balance and having all builds be near equally viable. These concerns don't necessarily conflict with what you said in the video, but I'm just sorta worried that they might go overlooked. First, I sometimes get the feeling that Fromsoft are hesitant to adjust builds in the ways players are suggesting because a lot of the suggestions from players contradict the original intent behind those builds. Simplified example being to make all the slowest weapons faster. If From's goal was to make weapons that feel heavy and meaty, and they work just fine in PvE, then it makes sense that they would be unhappy with reducing this unique feel just to make the PvP community happy. Or if they create a move that is supposed to mimic a specific enemy's attack, they wouldn't want to balance it in a way that makes it significantly different from its counterpart. I think it makes sense to try and focus on balancing suggestions that still respect the original intent behind a certain design choice. Not just to respect Fromsoftware's vision but also to keep the game's variety as high as possible. Secondly, a lot of the balance adjustments prominent members of the community tend to suggest focus strongly around players who already have at least a decent grasp of the game's combat. This came to mind when you talked about how expecting From to fix "the new big thing after a recent patch" like a combo that does a lot of damage and seems op in the moment might not necessarily be a good choice in the long run. Or, for another example, the eternal "should moonveil be nerfed" discussion. I feel like these discussions tend to neglect low-skill players, casual players and newcomers. A great number of players who check out the PvP scene after getting acquainted with the game via PvE immediately lose interest because of a high barrier of entry. If the game's PvP scene really is supposed to be open and inviting to everyone, then I personally think focusing at least some attention on their needs is absolutely necessary if the game is supposed to have any sort of longevity.
@simonealcazar816 Жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on the head. I think the PvP tends not think outside of their bubble within their groups and lacks the overall perspective of not only the casual/Newcomers side of PvP but PvE as well. These discussions never truly considered these side when how the game’s direction should go, in-sighting division. I seen in the FGC community a lot and it mostly is never for the better.

Excellent comment, fully agree on keeping original intent in mind and focusing on newer player experiences just as much as veteran player preferences. I think a good recent example is what Patch 1.09 did for light rolls. They are now almost exactly the same distance as medium rolls, with only a very marginal increase in roll-s. Many PvP veterans made light rolls their core complaint over the last patch, but according to insiders like DashingSaint, there wasn’t much cohesion or agreement on what exactly needed changing. And as a result of From only getting general feedback, and that feedback being focused on the experiences of tryhard invaders exhausted with light rolling Rune Arced solo hosts, light roll came out the other side in a very questionable state that ignores the original intent of light roll. Going off of the mechanic’s implementation in their previous games, light roll has always provided more distance and invulnerability, at the cost of reducing your available equipment burden, limiting your weapon choices, and forcing you to sacrifice defense/absorption and poise. This tradeoff has existed since the original Demons Souls and all the way through all three Dark Souls games. However, due to all this unclear and skewed criticism from one portion of the community that was spearheading the feedback, light roll has lost its niche. It is no longer a worthwhile sacrifice to make, and it no longer enables a meaningful tradeoff between defense and mobility. The many light, cloth armor sets that people find so appealing and beautiful in this game no longer have much reason to exist when heavier armors offer orders of magnitude more advantages, including more absorptions and poise. The hard work of re-tuning light roll distance to be more reasonable, nerfing the Winged Crystal Tear to prevent full Bull-Goats users from light rolling with the heaviest gear and max poise, and increasing the attack range of smaller off-meta weapons to allow them to rollcatch more effectively, all those specific tweaks that could have potentially pleased both sides of the community have instead been ignored in favor of a single skewed, heavy handed change that only pleases the side of the community that already refused to engage with light roll as a mechanic. And of course, this change will in turn frustrate both PvP and PvE players who like a lightweight mobile playstyle against players and bosses, all due to poor representation of their interests in the creation of community feedback. I hope feedback in the future will keep these player interests in mind so as to not misguide Fromsoft in their attempt to patch the game to our liking.

Please pardon this page-long response, but I have a few ideas. First, regarding PvP multiplayer: With structured coliseum kombat, a possible solution to push the game towards better balance and a less stagnant metagame would be for the game servers to collect data about player equipment preferences (weapons, shields, armor, talismans, spells, and Ashes of War) in order to systematically identify overpowered and underpowered equipment pieces. For example, if PvP coliseum players equipped with a specific piece of equipment win more than 66% of their matches, that would indicate that equipment would need a very slight nerf of, say, 1%. Conversely, if coliseum players win less than 33% of their matches with a specific piece of equipment, that would indicate that that specific piece of equipment would need a 1% buff. Alternatively, a simpler and perhaps better method would be to nerf and buff equipment pieces upon the basis of their popularity because, after all, the best equipment pieces are inherently likely to also be the most popular. Either way, I suspect automatically generating regular game patches with these subtle balance adjustments will eventually reduce the magnitude by which the best equipment pieces outclass the worst, and in the end you can compete with whatever build you like without worrying too much by being completely vulnerable to overpowered meta builds. Incidentally, I would also like to mention a few simple grievances and glitches with the game in general, and I suspect hardly anyone would be displeased if these issues and nit-picks are addressed: 1. When you pick up a new item, if you want to read that item’s description, you need to manually search and/or sort your inventory for that item to do so, which is a burdensome task that can sometimes require 20+ button presses. Solution: Add a “Switch action” prompt to the “New” window, which toggles between “OK” and “Item Description”, which instantly opens your inventory at the new item’s description page. 2. If you miss any dialogue from an NPC (due to a distraction or an accidental key press), you won’t be able to review what they said unless you look online for spoilers. Solution: Whenever you can “Talk” to an NPC, add a “Switch action” prompt which allows you to replay that NPC’s dialogue. Incidentally, in future Souls-style games, I would propose the elimination of the ‘exhaust dialogue’ gimmick, which requires the player to repeatedly talk to an NPC until they start repeating themselves because this gimmick renders bits of important dialogue inaccessible for the remainder of the campaign. 3. You can’t attack, block, or dodge when text is displayed near the bottom of the screen, whether it be NPC dialogue or text such as, “A heavy door has opened elsewhere” and “Stonesword key lost with use”, etc. Solution: Fix it and specifically delegate the Y-button for clearing text and making dialogue selections. 4. Allow the player to “Talk” and “Examine” while riding Torrent. 5. While resting at a Site of Grace, add a reminder pip next to “Level Up” when applicable and a reminder pip next to “Flask of Wondrous Physick” if you have an empty Crystal Tear slot. 6. When you activate a new Site of Grace, in addition to displaying “LOST GRACE DISCOVERED”, also display the name of that site. Example: LOST GRACE DISCOVERED (new line) Agheel Lake North 7. The lava around Mount Gelmir and Volcano Manor is lukewarm. Make it hot! 8. Allow players to export/import character appearances as .txt files. 9. Bug: Sometimes killing a monster won’t trigger the notification of the runes gained in the lower-right corner of the screen. 10. Bug: Unlike with stationary Birdseye Telescopes, the “Y: Exit” prompt is missing while using the portable Telescope. 11. Bug: The “About Invasion Multiplayer” info item isn’t unlocking properly when first obtaining Festering Bloody Finger UNLESS your first acquisition occurs as a gift from Varre at the Rose Church in Liurnia. 12. Bug: In the first cavern above the Cave of Knowledge, relocate the “Y: Show HUD” trigger between the player’s initial spawning position and the message on the ground; currently, this trigger is placed behind the player’s initial spawning position. 13. Bug: “Bellum Highway” text pops up at the entrance of Black Knife Catacombs in East Liurnia.

Something I absolutely loathe about the state of ER's pvp right now is that whenever you stumble on a cool unique combination of spells / weapons that work or offer viable playstyles that are alternative to the commonly used ones, your opponent can easily get frustrated that you're doing something new and, instead of adapting to it, they can pull out overpowered weapons that are near-impossible to beat without also using one of those overpowered weapons. Going off-meta and succeeding is punished because the playerbase would rather fight what they know than innovate new things- unless those new things are an aforementioned overpowered combination they can use to pocket steamroll a matchup where they're losing. When the few builds that excel in everything so effortlessly dominate the 'cool new things' that people are finding, what's the point in playing at all? It seems like the majority of the playerbase would rather "win" as quickly as possible with the least amount of effort required. Where's the fun in that?

Good luck with the projects you have. I've already given up with ER, I most likely won't even get the DLC on launch. But I might try Gabrimod when it comes out, it's literally the only thing I have hope for atm

I'll paste a response I wrote to another comment asking if the website is still happening "Back burner for now, me and kjell had to take on responsibility with managing the tournament scene as a lot of people previously working on it had quit. Luckily we're making a lot of progress, like the spectator cam and custom maps we recently created. You can see a bit of it here: www.twitch.tv/videos/1855602840"

Good old Amir. Analytical, neutral, objective commentary. Such a soothing voice too. I do think the heart of the Souls community is Online, but I also think ER brought in too much new blood that the old comfiness is mostly vanished. Hopefully after the hype dies down more veteran Souls types will stick around and make it a less retarded experience.

i left elden ring pvp because of the new community i left before i love elden ring so i dont suffer like other souls brothers and sisters dealing with this new community i have more than 3k hours on all souls games just from pvp, the reason why i left because souls games is not mmo games where is pvp and pve split up but the new player think its mmo and hate each others and i already played mmo games the amount of hates on both side is disgusting and i dont want to deal with that souls games community was the best now its just dreadful and to be honest all from pve'rs who split up this game to both side...sorry for bad english good luck guys

This. Isn't. Dark Souls. When will your type get this through your head? Just because it's a Soulslike doesn't mean you get to dictate what the game is. You don't get to try to tell people what the game they paid for should be. Good riddance, you sound like the type of person that does nothing but make a community worse. Holy crap the entitlement. Also, the MMO analogy makes absolutely no sense at all. MANY MMOs have forced PvP to PvErs.

I wish someone would make a mod that touches on seamless co-op to add invasions back and if they could get more slots would be fantastic, as someone who hates arena's and dislike duals since I love the chaos of actual invasions and hate the sterilization of PvP 1v1's/duals ext.

2:07 i am very happy to hear somebody else say this. It's not just the multiplayer though, even the artistic qualities of their games are ignored or just pushed in a weird direction by the devs. I miss the more atmospheric ds3, bloodborne, ds1 or even the original demon's souls. It's just different, now it feels like it will stay gone forever.

As a solo/coop player, I never liked the pvp aspects of souls games. The only time I genuinely enjoy pvp in souls is when I'm fighting a friend 1on1 while we try dumb stupid builds. I can never feel right about playing a game like this with a competitive mindset, especially when the balance is somewhat non-existent as well as the trash connection issues. So yeah, sadly I've left behind Elden Ring for now until that new DLC decides to drop.

As much as feedback and developers involvement is important, I think youtubers are highly resposible for the state of pvp: full of copy-pasted tryhard builds. There are like 3 channels that I know that play with non meta stuff and focus on doing something creative and not instakill/infinite stunlock builds and there are like 50 other channels with rkr/quickstep dual lances etc. People are promoting the cheapest way to get a kill instead of promoting crafting your own unique experience, creativity and fun.

Elden Ring was my first Fromsoft game, so I didn't know how multiplayer has been a tradition in the Souls games. It feels like a tacked on afterthought to me. I've been playing since launch day and I've never had the desire to play PVP. I'm not chasing someone around for a few minutes for a couple of useless items. I invade for Varres questline, then I go back offline. I don't even want to see messages, phantoms, or blood stains. I don't care what anyone else is doing, I'm the only Tarnished of no renown in my world.
@Sinhsseax Жыл бұрын
I started with DS1, where there were more features tied to multiplayer such as item loss and death spawning creatures called vagrants and incantations leaving buffs for a player in other worlds. For me, it was the chaotic nature of these interactions that was interesting. Especially, when you start with invasions and have PvP in a PvE environment with combat, that is made for PvE and is very different from usual PvP because of that. These games can be quite stagnant and predictable and the multiplayer adds spice. I can't understand you not wanting messages, bloodstains and so on. They have helped me so much and confused me in places playing blind.
@jasongriffin1517 Жыл бұрын
@@Sinhsseax I'm glad that other people enjoy it, it just seems like a waste of time to me. I tried Co-op with my brother, but I'm on console so it was pretty lame. We didn't even get invaded, it just sucked that we couldn't ride Torrent, had to reload at each zone, and didn't both get credit for bosses. No aspect of multiplayer intrigues me. PvP is just a handful of meta builds rolling around, and co-op is janky. I still play everyday, all by myself, I'm looking forward to the expansion.

Not to mention that pvp is the only reason people play the game after a year or so. Rarely do new players join in the game years after release. The reason ds3 still had a thriving player base was because the PvP was good

The pvp is well broken. Firstly, because of the developers themselves, who try to balance the amount of weapons and ashes in the game, something that I can even understand. Secondly, from the players themselves, from mods that give you all the items, to the cheaters, and to the packs of people who use broken L2 auto weapons, the latter at least do not have an advantage over the rest.

It rubs me the wrong way how a small group of PvPers who, to them PvP is the main draw of the games, use their status in the community to try and speak for everyone and act like PvP is more important than it is and skew the discussion of improvements/additions made to the game. PvP isn't what keeps the games alive, it's not what all the most hardcore players like, and in fact because invasions are forced on anyone cooping, and how obnoxious the PvP can be, it actively detracts even from some people's interest in playing, as PvPers' fun is subsidized by coopers' loss. And trying to point to Sekiro like it's proof of anything doesn't hold up, it's not a soulslike, it was never trying to be one, it's not even an RPG. And furthermore, multiplayer contributing to longevity doesn't need PvP, specifically, coop would suffice, as seen in Nioh. Not everyone even likes PvP and that goes generally not just for Souls, that can't be changed. Unsurprisingly, From makes some of the best PvE in the industry so it attracts a lot of people whose interest is PvE. Not PvP. I get that for those who really like PvP, the state it's been in for From's games can be very demoralizing/frustrating and there's so much that could be improved, but it's unfair and disingenuous to act like the PvP is more important than it is, just because it's that important to you. I don't think you or that website as a whole truly are concerned with improving the health of the multiplayer experience, just improving your own experience, otherwise like the very first thing that would have been brought up was how horrible twink invasions still are and how disruptive the short invasion cooldown can be to trying to coop on anything except outside a boss fog. That's worse and affects more people's experience with the game than QoL changes for PvPers.
@sarkaztik3228 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, PvP has never "kept the game alive" and it never will FromSoft will stop making updates and DLC when they no longer see a profit in it or want to move on to a new project. The tiny PvP scene is not going to be a deciding factor in this. There's far too much ego. If 90%+ of your community is playing PvE, then PvE is keeping the game alive. When the vast majority of current players put the game down for good, the percentage of PvPers will rise, but they will still be the minority. Same way as it is in DS3 (well, honestly all of the DS games)
@carlschrappen9712 Жыл бұрын
I mainly PvE myself, but I don't see how the PvP advocating for improvement to the parts of the game they are most passionate about is "trying to speak for everyone", or making the PvE less than it could be. Fromsoft has made PvE centric changes like adding Bernhal as a summon to Godskin Duo, and are currently working on an undoubtedly massive expansion for the PvE, so it's not like their neglecting the PvE for the sake of the PvP in their updates. The biggest effect that the PvP changes have had on the PvE is making weapon movesets better anyways, a positive change as far as I'm concerned, so I don't really see what your problem is. Consider that the reason the PvPers are such a vocal minority is that the PvP needs more work to be in a good spot, which the PvE already is.
@OccasionalGoof Жыл бұрын
@@carlschrappen9712 I don't have a problem with people into PvP advocating for improvements to PvP, and that isn't what I was criticising - I was criticising the way they frame it as "helping everyone" and trying to emphasise the importance of PvP. The problem is the disingenuous nature of what is being claimed. They're not trying to improve the game, benefit everyone, or even improve the online as a whole - they're advocating for invader-centric and duel-centric benefits that serve them and no one else. If they were honest about that I wouldn't be bothered by it. Also, the type of gameplay in the most dire situation of bad unfun design isn't the PvP, it's the coop, which is part of the PvE. The state of coop is worse than PvP has ever been. But that doesn't get talked about because coop summons' time and very existence is taken for granted.

I really like you and your buddies approach, like you're trying to go "science method" for the PvP balance which is great, but in my opinion PvPs biggest hinderance for the broader audience isn't really making every setup somewhat viable (don't misunderstand me that is a great achivement for these games already) but just that PvP content it's mostly lacking; no 6 player invasions, no PvP dedicated covenant areas (gank city was great and you know it), no invasion rewards (rune arcs are useless), no level cap (I don't think level should be capped but the game atleast should prompt you something like "you are going over X level (125?) this might hinder your online activity") all this makes that jimmy casual doesn't go to PvP because the game itself isn't encouraging you to PvP by any means
