What deck is complete without a grill? I took this Nexgrill Griddle Grill and turned it into an outdoor Hibachi Grill. This is a great addition to my deck.

I have cooked on it about 5 times now. No major issues. The only problem I have had is me forgetting to put the cover on and the catch tray fills up with water.

Oh and I would put more heavy duty wheels on. The ones that I put on work, but if I start moving it a lot I think they might give out.

Here are a couple of tips that make assembly slightly easier kzbin.infoUgkxCx5fHawkK9OoV-ojFrY8JLnZrFwAmvUt . 1) One person can assemble, but if you have a buddy to help, it will make it go faster - especially steps 1-3 and 8 (the legs aren't heavy but can be difficult to hold while screwing things in). Step 8, 1st part will take some time unless you have two more hands OR are really lucky. 2) Use a socket wrench! 3) Step 7, 3rd part - the flame carry over tube has an open side, MAKE SURE THE OPEN SIDE IS FACING THE FRONT. If it's facing the back, the tube won't work. 4) Step 10, 3rd part - if you don't have small hands (I don't, they're gigantic) getting the nut on is really difficult (but not impossible). It took me about 4 hours to assemble, but I took a "union break" every 60-90 minutes and ate a quick lunch. Also, I'm really OCD so I took my time, looked at the instructions carefully, and cleaned up as I went.

I like the overall looks of it but I see a few issue. The griddle is sitting on a wood base. If you would pour concrete on top of the wood base it would reflect the heat back to the burners and griddle. That would also protect the wood from possible fire. One other thing is venting the bottom cabinet, putting a vent at the bottom (propane is heavier than air). I like the overall looks and I hope it is an inspiration to folks out there to build one. Or, instead of pouring cement, HardieBacker 1/4” cement board is lighter than it’s competitors & tested to being non-combustible.

I noticed the grill sitting on the wood as well. Could also use ceramic tile under it to protect the wood from burning and to deflect the heat.

I love it. The only change I would make is hardy backer around where the grill sits for an extra measure of protction from the flames.

Your idea and design is absolutely awesome, only fault I can find is the paint job but thats minor. Maybe try adding a small vent to the cabinet underneath for any trapped gas and maybe insulate the area around the flat grill with some cement board to help reduce any risks of fire. Great Job dude! Im not sure if it would be better for this application since it is around food, but maybe try using Bluing Liquid to turn the stainless steel black.

Love the idea, I have several issues, though. Pressure treated wood shouldn’t be used for this type of project, it is going to shrink up A LOT, especially with the amount of heat those griddles produce. Not enough ventilation in the cabinet for the propane to escape. I would for sure be worried about the amount of heat, catching all the wood on fire. Great concept, not ideal materials. ALSO, how has your shop not burned down yet, cutting steel in the dust box for the miter saw, that’s Sketch, and welding in there with sawdust all around. Just my two cents. But really nice idea.

All those sparks and saw dust in an enclosed area makes me anxious just watching. Looks cool but I would definitely spread the wheels out to the corners to help offset the weight and prevent it from tipping back and maybe add a concrete or heat barrier between the grill and the enclosure.

I was thinking the same thing. Using a cutoff wheel on the same chopsaw where you cut wood is sending all those sparks into your sawdust collection area. Makes for a great smoldering start to a later fire...

Having worked in restaurant kitchens, I would recommend that you get a piece of stainless steel bent up to fit in the area under the griddle. You would be surprised at how much oil will wind up under that appliance over time. The steel accent pieces are very nice but welding should have taken place off the stand once they have been fitted. Stitch welding would have prevented most of the steel from twisting and warping. This would have also allowed you to paint under the steel accents preventing rust from forming underneath also you could have sealed the wood under the trim to keep out moisture that can damage the wood. Thinking of creating the same set up however here in Crete most of these outdoor kitchens are detached from the home and are equipped with a wood fired oven and bar b que that can handle a whole lamb and a full sink. I would be adding my Jenn-Air propane grill to the whole shebang. Again thanks for the idea!!!

Besides the venting of the enclosed spaces (to avoid trapped gas explosion) and protecting the wood from heat damage… I’d also recommend not using pressure treated wood for any surfaces that might come in contact with food. The chemicals are not good and it’s better not to play roulette with that.

I would have made the grill top above the table a couple inches. Heat comes from the sides and will cook the wood. The metal side shelfs can be used as a warmer. Also there is usually side vents for primary combustion air. Make sure you have enough clearance for that.

You did a great job.!!! The only difference I've would have used steel framing... It's fire resistant and it doesn't warp.. on the other hand what does and it's flammable... Steel framing products you can find it home Depot Just ask him.. it's a light product that is used for commercial structure buildings easy to work with... And it's flammable resistant.. but regardless you did a great job 👍

I like this build. I would do some things a little different like spraying the paint instead of brushing it on. Maybe would have done things in different orders too. Also the big thing… you didn’t season the dang flat top before using it. That hurt me lol

Looks great but what about the heat distribution out of the sides and back of the griddle. I know there is a ton of heat that comes out between the griddle plate and the base of the griddle firebox. I have a blackstone and the side shelves aren’t much use because it melts bottles if you set them there. I would think it is enough heat to light the wood on fire and the griddle would have had to been elevated above the gap to alleviate the heat.

It gets about 100°f on the sides. Not enough to melt or burn anything.

Blackstone is much hotter at 60,000 btu and the sides and bottom get 400 degrees it would burst that surround into flames just from the heat without a radiant barrier. Hope it doesn’t happen.

It’s all treated pine
