Thanks for all your experimentation and sharing. I'd like to make something like this for when I'm at work in an office (no public interaction). There's no way to be sure my coworkers aren't infected, but I hate wearing a face mask for 8 hours straight. For those long stretches of time, this seems perfect

I have worn this many times but never for more than an hour. Seems pretty good so far but the blower is still a bit too noisy.

As to the price of the commercial 3M version being >$1000, alas you're right. I have one made when it was sold under the "Racal" brand -- which tells you're it's really, really long-of-tooth. Mine has the integrated bright yellow hardhat, which makes it a bit uncomfortable for long term wear.
