I’ve driven on BFG’s with several of my trucks from the Mud Terrain to the KO series. What I found was they were great till winter and then the KO2 was a challenge on hard pack and slush. I run the KO 2’s till late November then I switch to Nokia winter Studded Hakkapeliitta tires. They are excellent in the winter and less of a challenge to drive compared to the KO2’s. When my KO2’s wear down I’ll probably switch to the Trail Terrains as my F150 spends most of its life on pavement. I have a CFMOTO Uforce 600 side by side to do the dirty off road work and keep my F150 nice and clean. Awesome review I enjoy your channel.

Excellent review and comparison of the BFG line up!! I run the BFG KO3s on my work truck. 2021 GMC 2500HD 4x4 crew cab gasser. She carries a 400L slip tank, back rack with heavy lights and loaded toolbox on top of the slip tank. That poor truck gets sent down the haul roads in the active coal mines of British Columbia and the oilsands of Alberta. Just came home from the coal mines, roads were iced over with blowing snow(Hwy 22 for those who know the area), the KO3s did great even with the slip being empty. They have also stood up well to the muddy, rock filled haul roads of the mines. I will definitely be putting set of KO3s on both our 2023 GMC Sierra half ton and our 1999 OBS Tahoe Z71. Couple things to note about being on active mine haul roads and mines in general. General active haul road rule, you are not allowed to stop a light vehicle(Pick up truck) on an active haul road. That being said they are some exceptions but that is a whole other thing. An active haul road is defined as a "road" used by the large haul trucks(CAT 777, 779, etc..) and large equipment(Wheel loaders and dozers). While the HD tire is a great option, mines are CHEAP, they look at the bottom dollar when it comes to anything, so if those tires aren't seen much in the mines its probably due to price because each mine has hundreds of light vehicles(small buses, pick ups, full size SUVs, deck trucks etc..). That all being said, I'm a Canadian and everything is stupid pricy here.

Thanks for great details. I have the KO2 on two trucks and was to my eye worried the KO3 was milder than the KO2. Not as concerned now. I agree with you on the absence of white lettering on 20". Mind boggling they don't have them. If the customer doesn't want them they just turn them in. If they do the customer advertises for them. So elementary ! BFG has always had the best sidewall styling and they just score an own goal on this. I've in the past run black curb side and OWL on the drivers side and got both looks at once.

BFG KO2s are pure trash on ice & snow for regular daily use. I would highly recommend Nokian winter tires (or a dedicated winter tire) if u live in a northern climate (especially the studded versions). I love my KO2s (on a full-time 4wd 4R & LX570) but I live in Canada and it gets cold af @ my location. Even in just below freezing conditions (with snow & ice) the ko2’s are not safe to run in that context. Just my 2 cents. Love your channel bro!
@vincefairleigh689917 күн бұрын
True that the ko2 are not good in ice and compact snow, and wet roads, aside from that they are the best tires for a truck as long as it’s not a one ton diesel.. I guarantee that the ko2 is way stronger than the nokean,, I’m going to get the ko3 soon, hopefully they will be good for ice and snow, I’m in ft Mac Murray at the moment, lots of snow soon.

@@vincefairleigh6899 your statement says "KO2 are not good in ice, compact snow, wet roads ... as long as it's not a one-ton diesel" ... i'd say that makes it not really a good tire.

@ I have ko2s on my truck, I’m in northern Alberta in the oil refineries at the moment, I’ll be driving south to the coast of British Columbia in a day or three, it’s probably going to be full of snow, it will do great in fresh snow, but they aren’t great for ice or compact snow, and when not brand new they slip around a bit in wet weather, but still have a snowflake, definitely not something I’d recommend when one can buy the ko3, they are supposed to be a big improvement in all the shortfalls of the ko2, and on a heavy truck ko2s do wear quickly, although on my Silverado 1500 I get 90,000. Kms on the ko2s, my truck is 6000. Lbs, a 9000 lb one ton will wear them out though, although my friend had a pair of ko2s on his dually work truck and regularly overloaded his truck, the tires took a beating and never got a flat, all his other tires have gotten so many flats, I’m thinking about buying the ko3 s..

I fully agree. Ran General Grabber AT2s on a V8 Grand Cherokee and Land Rover Discovery mk1 for a decade. The old AT Grabber was much better than my fiends Land Cruiser with KO2s. We get 3-4 months of winter, the KO2s were dangerous in winter conditions. The Grabber was actually better all-around. I currently run dedicated Nokians for winter but can't settle on a "summer tire" that has above "average" wet performance and retain AT qualities. New AT models keep getting more aggressive and closer to MTs and disregard aqua-planning and wet performance on the road. My current 4x4 drifts and spins like crazy on wet roads.
@fscottgray978422 күн бұрын
The small ridges between the large outside lugs are also stone ejectors that help keep rocks from drilling into the tire. The large channels between the lugs are also tapered slightly being larger at the surface compared to the base of the lug. This is also a feature to allow rocks to be thrown out easier. If the channels were straight they would hold rocks more. Your videos are always so good and I am sure you have probably already covered both points I mentioned. I noticed triangular stone ejectors in the HD terrain tires. Before the trail terrain BFG made a tire called the Rugged terrain that looks very similar.. I put a set on my snow plow truck almost 15 years ago and they are still working great.

Should be common sense, but may not be thought about. Your providing example of wicking and effect of the tread pattern can help with it. "Wicking action: The movement of a liquid through a narrow space without the help of external forces, like gravity." Appreciate the good faith of BFG sending you the tires and notes on their case use function as we mostly want facts. A good business never needs to advertise their product as it has a reputation, and I leave it at that. Keep in mind that those who work at BFG also have family and provided a better product serves to keep them safe as a well. Once again, function over "prettiness/looks". Something about the tyre compound: earlier this year i was lucky enough to be sent on a driving safety training with my collegues at work. Our instructor there is a part time instructor and part time rallye driver. He recently had been at Continental (the tyre company) and they got a factory tour and to ask stuff: The Conti guy told him that when they come up with a new compound that works better, it takes up to 7 years for the recipe to really get handed down to the "not so premium" brands in the same tyre conglmomerate. So when Conti comes up with a new recipe, until you get the same compound performance in Uniroyal, Semperit, General Tyre... it can take up to 7 years. (that's for tyres in the same segment i guess, if they don't have to fear to canibalize on sales, but beat a competitor, they will share more. -> my opinion)

They did excellent in sand dunes we have and I remember rolling through feet of snow with great traction so much I was shocked at times. I built my first Jeep 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with Selec Trac and the 4.0. 2” 4wd Hardware coil lift and limited slip rear end with 31x10.50 BFG AT KO’s, JKS adjustable trac bars, and Bilstein 5100 shocks. That thing was insane how capable it was. Hill climbing, sand dunes, and deep Minnesota snow. All around excellent. I can’t wait to put Ko3’s on my 04 WJ, when I install my 2” lift and Bilstein 5100’s. I've had good luck airing down my Michelin Defenders on my Ram 3500. I've only destroyed one. In off-roading here in Arizona some of the roads have super sharp rocks. So I don't need an aggressive tire but I could use an ice/snow tread with super-strong sidewalls for protection when aired down but keeping me on an icy freeway when visiting family in Idaho and can still tow heavy. Very interesting. You know, it's easy to have a ho hum attitude toward BFG because they have become so ubiquitous. The thought process behind these tires is really an eye opener, and a huge aid in choosing the right tire. Learning what I did here has definitely moved them up in my pecking order. The one issue I have with BFG and many other brands is tire weight. This is something that many manufacturers just do not take seriously, and most buyers are ignorant of the implications. It sounds like BFG has the resources, both financially and intellectually to lead the way here too. I would love to see this happen.

Nathan, thanks for another deep dive into tire tech! I have always appreciated BFG's innovation in the off-road tire industry. However, I don't run their A/T or M/T tires anymore for two reasons: shallow tread depth compared to their competitors, and undersized diameters versus their claimed size. I was really hoping that these issues would be fixed with the KO3 and KM3, but it looks like I'll have to wait for the next generation of BFGs to see if they address those shortcomings.

Another great video. On the Trail Terrain - I see hydroplaning because of the solid side lug. The water is "trapped" in the center of the tire with no exit strategy. Another part of my brain says that millions of semis are running down the roads with (only) continuous lugs, so maybe having water exiting the sides isn't the important part of the equation... Clearly, there's a gap in my tire traction/ grip, science/theory understanding or knowledge base.

Weight difference doesn’t seem dramatic between the ratings so main concern is On road wet performance, performance when aired down (tires ability to flex and grip obstacles) and alongside that being comfortable enough. G003 are good tires but compare them to the mt km3 not the ko2.

Just got a set of KO3s for my F150 last week after watching some of your other videos. Man what an upgrade from my General Grabber APTs. I went with 295/70R18s and a 2" leveling kit and its a whole different truck. Rides like a dream with zero road noise. Looking forward to seeing how these tires perform in the North East winter!

I did the exact same with my Tremor 2 weeks ago, same size and levelling kit. Couldn’t tell you the difference because I only had the truck for 1 day before I switched them out

Great video! I’m a film sound editor/designer by trade, so I notice stuff most people won’t. Your videos lately have been sounding a lot better. Cleaner dialogue, SFX, and even music. My one constructive suggestion is to dial the music back a bit. The first part with wall to wall music was kind of distracting and didn’t add anything to your VO. The second part of the video where the music faded out was better. Like all sounds, think of the music as a way to enhance the story. There are plenty of examples of wall to wall music done well; John Williams’ score for Star Wars is a good example. Schindler’s List or Saving Private Ryan are good examples of music used more sparingly to evoke emotions at specific times and to get out of the way when other sounds are more important.

Awesome feedback, thanks for taking the time. I have no background in any of the video and audio stuff… all self taught so I have LOTS of bad habits and a lot to learn.

Excellent in-depth discussion and very helpful. Thanks. I'd love it if you some of the other brands would do this same thing. I currently am on Toyo AT3's and I love the tire, for the most part. I had AT2's in the past and they have a long tread life and my AT3's are running what seems to be long life as well, but I've had my 3rd sidewall puncture on my AT3's and would be curious if that is the weak point for these Toyos. They perform really well in the dirt and rocks in Utah and also here in Colorado, but after my 3rd sidewall puncture I'm starting to look at other tires. I've never had good luck with the K02's (barely achieved 15K with them), but might have to try the K03's. I'm also looking at Falkens, but I've seen those have it's fair share of sidewall punctures as well. Anyway appreciate the video. Very nice knowledge.

I’ve been watching your videos and love the work you put in. I’m about to put new tires on my 22 ram rebel. I have run Toyo AT3’s in TN where it rains a lot. If I have 4A on it’s fine. In 2wd back end struggles to grip. I’m torn between going with the Toyo again…or KO3’s or Nitto G3’s. Weight is somewhat important as I’d prefer not to lose more mpg’s. So all in all… Toyo AT3, KO3, or Nitto G3… What wins?

I’ve been running nothing but BFG tires for over the last 20 years. From Rugged Trails, KOs, and now KO2s. I’m going to get some KO3s next.

What BFG is doing is coasting on a name made decades ago while slowly committing suicide. I ran BFG's for decades and thought they were the best tire made. That was until I started testing other brands over the last few years. After trying a few other all terrain tires and noticing how they handled snow and rain so much better, I moved away from BFG ATs. Years ago I learned the the KM2 and KM3 were no match for other mud tires. They are really bad in snow, like most mud tires, but their inability to hold a line while side hilling was literally embarrassing, as other rigs like mine did not struggle the way I was. So, I removed the KM's and switched to a Mickey MTZ, a FAR better mud tire than the KM's. They treated me so well I tried the Mickey baja boss AT and was immediately blown away by how much better they worked than the KO's everywhere. I was so impressed I removed a set of BFG KO2's with only three thousand miles on them to replace them with baja boss AT's. I thought I might try the new KO3, but after looking at them and realizing they went the opposite way as everyone else by building a less aggressive AT tire while the competition offers hybrid ATs, I dont see myself ever buying another BFG tire.

I have KO2s that came on my wrangler that I’ll be replacing soon. I’ve always found BFG to be a little overrated but did like them but I had severe dry rot at 13 months and almost no tread at left 10k miles on their G force tire. Michelin wouldn’t honor their warranty, tried to pretend they didn’t understand math and give me 25% in credit instead of 75% when I’d driven a little over 10k of 40k warranty, they also would only offer the for the price I paid not the current price of the tire which had increased about 30%. Front and back were the same size which I know matters. I’ve never used a tire warranty before so I can’t say others would do better but it was enough for BFG to lose my business. Tire had also only been out a few once with no reviews so it’s crazy they would pull that.

So would the K03 be a good recommendation in Idaho for someone who is a little more than a weekend warrior? On a 98 land cruiser prado or even a 96 hilux surf? Light mud and trails. No crawling. Lots of snow play.

Bought the KO2's on recommendations for a solid winter tire in snow. Great deep snow tire ! One problem, along with winter snow, you get ICE. Slushy ice, packed ice and black ice. WARNING . . . . . the KO2's on winter ice is a death trap ! ! ! They have zero grip. You will be fish-tailing no matter what speed !!!! Absolutely one of the most dangerous winter tires on Ice !!!

I've been looking for some 35's that will be somewhat decent in the snow / ice. Not sure what to get. Always had a set of blizzaks on our cars / suvs for the winter, and they are amazing.

I do agree, but I also find the KO2 suck in wet surfaces in acceleration. There are no problems with hydroplaning. I put 50k on my set of K02 and will be replacing them in the next months. I am looking at the new KO3 or the trail tech as a replacement, but I will consider other brands with 3peak severe snow rating. I drive F150 4wd in Illinois, where winter driving varies from mild to severe conditions.

Hopefully they're better. I hated my Ko2's in rain. They were horrible and they started chunking pretty badly around 20k. My Falken AT3w were a better tire for me on almost everything. When I need a new set I may try the new Ko3.

Loved the video but the information on the HD-Terrain left me with some of the questions I have had on it not answered still and now even more curious to the answers. The HD-Terrain was said to be a tire for the oil companies and companies of Alaska. With that, there are lots of miles of snow packed and icy roads as well as the mud that was mentioned. How are these tires built for those situations? Would it be a good tire for a 3/4 diesel that also has that type of terrain to travel on for 6-7 months of the year like we do in Idaho. Over on the colder side of the state with less population than the Boise valley. Can you speak to me/us about what they said as far as the snow/ice traction. I know you said and have shown that you have them on your Ford F250, what is your experience so far. I really want to run them, but with having a larger lug and harder compound, I am picturing it having the traction of a hockey puck on packed snow and ice. I also heard a rumor that they were in the works of developing a HD-A/T. Can you speak to that. Thank you for your great videos and love all of the Toyota content you have. Cheers

Make an At that can handle highway speeds, be good at mud and most importantly deal with rain and snow !
