Scatter it don’t pile it. Nothing in nature puts food in a giant pile. Deer are much calmer feeding on bait that’s scattered plus they’re more likely to eventually turn at the right angle for a shot.

I scatter it for a month or so and start piling it up when they are used to that area. Then I pour some liquid rage apple shit in the corn twice a week. 15 days before the season I’ll dumb 3 bags in a pile and pour and entire gallon of that shit on the corn. By the time the season starts there ain’t no bait there whatsoever so I can legally hunt it

To get deer coming to a new spot i mix apple corn in with the regular corn. It has a strong aroma they can smell a long ways away and the apple helps. If there are no apple trees it doesn't matter. They will come! Once i watch the camera for a week and there's some nice bucks I'll add rice bran pellets, cattle cubes 12 % and 20% . They love it ! Sometimes I'll put out alfalfa bales in the spots too and if hood spots I'll put minerals and water troughs. They drink them gone ! If they have everything in one spot they don't go far except to look for love ... lol. But late season they really hit the food to recover from the rut and by then not a lot in the woods for them .
@Outdoord
@Outdoord 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing all of that. Ive always wondered about putting alfalfa bales out to see if the bucks would come. I also recommend putting some minerals down. Food & water the ultimate combo. The late season has always been tricky where I hunt. For some reason it's not as easy to get the buck in like early season. I think that's mostly due to hunting pressure and lack of cover.
@SuperDave-pe1zw

@Outdoord they like alfalfa best if you really break it up and spread it all around, I buy compacted alfalfa bales at tractor supply, it's really compressed so small but you cut it open it's a lot. I have bucks I've never seen or no pictures of come to the food late season, either because they're hungry or they'll follow a yearling doe to the corn. Bow season ends in Oklahoma January 15th. I shot a 157 10 pt on January 13th and another year a 140s 10 pt on January 15th. So never give up!!

How often should I lay corn down and how much corn?
@Outdoord
@Outdoord 8 күн бұрын
Great question I would start out with a 50lb bag. If you are not close to where you hunt I would put 2 bags down. Hang a trail camera. Depending on location it can take a week or 2 for deer to show up. Depending whether you are looking for bucks or not they can take longer and are more complicated as far as placement. Once deer start hitting it depending on how many deer eat it consistently you will have to make adjustments. A cellular trail camera will help you gauge how much corn is still around. There is really no right or wrong to it, you just want to make sure you keep enough down because other wildlife eats it especially if it's on the ground. If the corn isn't consistently available the deer will find other food sources. I hope that helped!

When you put a camera on your bait pile I assume it's a cell one and was just wondering what setting you put your trigger delay on. Mine is on 30 seconds
@Outdoord
@Outdoord 3 ай бұрын
I usually put out just a regular trail camera in the beginning. I will transition to cellular as the season gets closer and if I have a target buck. My Delays change depending on activity. The first couple of weeks I will have less of a delay on. I have had up to a 5 minute delay but you can also miss deer that way. It's kind of a toss up to avoid squirrels and raccoons birds etc. If I feel like I have a shooter than I will put on less of a delay and try to pin point him. Another tip too you can put some more cameras out not directly on the bait on the main trails coming to and from and usually catch the bucks that way without draining your trails camera batteries on the bait pile. When I really want to make sure I dont miss anything 30 second to a minute is good you just get a lot of other stuff too lol. Especially when you have had the bait out for at least a few weeks. It also usually takes the bucks a few weeks to find the corn and then to hit it more consistently takes some time as well. I hope that helped LMK!

I think a lot of hunters hunt too close to the corn pile. Use the terrain to your advantage if your goal is to get a buck. Find a spot where it's hard for them to get behind you and wind you. The way mine is setup the deer come from out in front of me and not behind me so I can get down without them knowing. The key would be to wait until all the deer leave then get down. Hunting the trails to and from the food is an effective strategy as well. Set your trail cameras out and see which trials they are using then setup that way. You still want to be in bow range no matter which way you chose to set your stand. I hope that helped!

Just because somebody hunts bait doesn't mean they don't hunt without it. Take away hunting natural food sources, corn fields, beans fields etc. then a lot of hunters would be unsuccessful. A lot of hunters hunt bait and are successful, they also use it to take inventory. I think that decision should be left to the individual hunter and what their personal goals are. I also think saying that it's not hunting is an opinion. Which I see not much difference if a hunter hunts food sources at all. Thanks for sharing.

Bait is unethical.
@Outdoord
@Outdoord 3 ай бұрын
It's definitely a debatable topic. It's legal in most states and can be a very effective way to hunt and harvest deer. Nothing is guaranteed though, and it is also a lot of work if you do it consistently. It's also not cheap. Effort, time and preparation all go into earning one opportunity. It's not an easy way out in my opinion because I have done it enough to know. A lot of things still have to go right. I think most people can agree that its not much different then hunting a natural food source/corn field or bean field. However, not everyone has access to farms that set up that way. I can respect both sides of it, but we all have the choice to make the decision on how we want to hunt. That choice should always be available at the hunters discretion. Whatever makes the hunter happy i'm all in for. How we individually pursue and hunt deer and what challenges/goals we set for ourselves should always be an individual choice not what someone else thinks. Always hunt within the law of course!
@markf5735
@markf5735 3 ай бұрын
I disagree, but respect your opinion. We can't bait in NH, I hunt for meat and will kill a doe if the opportunity presents itself. The last thing I want to do is kill a doe with a 6 month old fawn because the fawn will not survive. If I could hunt over bait I'd have the time to wait and see if a fawn showed up, or to see which doe the fawn belonged to. As Outdoord stated " That choice should always be available at the hunters discretion."

Baiting deer isn't hunting. Baiting deer is just killing for lazy people who shouldn't have a hunting license.
@Outdoord
@Outdoord Ай бұрын
I disagree. Hunters who bait deer pay to support conservation through buying a hunting license just like all the other hunters. It's their right and freedom of choice on how they want to hunt. We shouldn't discourage anyone from the sport. There are multiple benefits to it most importantly helping a tag get filled to feed someone's family. I personally bait deer in the early season and the cost of it alone is a big commitment. I think it's the opposite of lazy considering the work it takes to do it consistently and effectively. It's earned just like any other style of hunting it takes work and it doesn't guarantee anything. Not everyone agrees with it and 'im ok with that. We dont have to. I think something to keep in mind is that everyone's situation and property is different. At the end of the day the corn that we put out comes from the same corn fields that many hunters hunt over. I personally don't see a difference. Thanks for voicing your opinion on it. Conversation is always a good thing so people can help understand each other.
