A truly inspiring video! You have made me realise what is possible with a kayak; I have just got into kayaking at age 79. I watched it the day after kayaking on a Scottish loch with patches of ice in places, the air temperature about 4C, and we were fine, so to see you two in Greenland made me realise what is possible! Thank you so much!

Hi Jolanda and Frank. This video was amazing. It touched me right in my heart (or stomach or something). It made me want to go to Greenland, but I have enough self insight to know that I won't do it. I was in the same group as you, building a baidarka under the wonderful guidance of Anders Thygesen. If I should go anywhere, I might rather to the Aleutian archipelago, where the bidarka originate from.. This workshop was an exceptional experience for me. I have often said that it was one the best weeks in my life. It was hard work, and my fingers were sore and full of blisters. But that did not matter. The unity of the group, that everyone helped each other, the humor and laughter. together with Anders, made it so special. I hope you look back at it with some of the same experience as me. Take care! Tor

Sorry for the delay (but I was canoeing last month, on beautiful Lake Inari, Finland.) In Greenland we had our Nortik kayaks, the Argo and (mine) the Navigator. It's foldable, very rugged and totally seaworthy expedition kayaks. You can check out the website of Frank, he also imports them (vouwkanowinkel.nl). The tent is the 4P type of Hyperlite Mountain Gear. And the plan is to continue in east Greenland, around Milne Land, next summer. Greetings, Jolanda

@sadovodby Жыл бұрын
@@speleokanu4720 must be same size?
@speleokanu4720 Жыл бұрын
They used Argo 5,20m 160kg payload and Navigator 5,05m 150kg according to data sheet. Nearly same size, but Navigator has less space inside due to the wodden frame and less hight. Both excellent realiable seaworth watertight folds. I use my Argo from WW 1-2 on rivers, lakes and sea. It carries Baggage, food, water for multiple day trips and is still fast to paddle.
@kirstyleitch8636 ай бұрын
A wonderful adventure beautifully shared, such a pleasure to watch. Can you tell me please, were you happy with the Nortik Navigators? I am considering buying one and there is very little written about them by paddlers.
@OutdoorFoto6 ай бұрын
Thanks, Kirsty. The Navigator (with the wooden frame, mine) and the Argo (alluminium frame, Franks) are our personal best option for expedition kayaking. We 've done a 2 week trip partly around Corsica (other You Tube film of mine) and this summer we plan to head back to Greenland again, with the same kayaks. They are sturdy and absolute super sea kayaks. I have a Rebel Greenland T and an Ilaga here at home, both wonderful kayaks for the sea but on a trip with food and gear for a month on board, my Navigator is best. It is also very stable (for sure compared to my Ilaga ;-), which is also nice at a heavy sea covered with icebergs.)
@kirstyleitch8636 ай бұрын
@@OutdoorFoto Thank you. One more question, I see you carry equipment on the deck, did you protect the fabric there at all? On hardshells I would usually put something in place to protect from spare paddles but am wary of doing so in case glue damages the skin of a Nortik. Keep up the wonderful adventures, more films please!
@OutdoorFoto6 ай бұрын
@@kirstyleitch863 I don't see a problem here. Even if there were any scratches on my deck (not that I know), then I would not bother. My kayak (equipment) is there to be used. If the fabric would be that sensitive that I had to protect it from having packsacks or a spare paddle on it, then it would not be an expedition sea kayak.
@kayakncamping Жыл бұрын
Beautiful video - thank you. May I ask what type of gloves you used? I've been looking through the Neo gloves, but not sure which ones you were using. Follow up question: did you like those gloves? Did they work for you?
@OutdoorFoto Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! We used different types. We both had the type which connect to the paddle. for the really cold moments, but also had normal paddle gloves where only the thumb is separate from the rest of the fingers and the palm stays open (I have them from Yak, very soft and a little thicker neoprene) . I also had my thick gloves from Neo Pro. Frank doesn't like them so it's very personal and you have to paddle lots of cold hours at home to learn what works best for you. I love them because I can still work my camera's while paddling and never get cold fingers although every finger is separate in them.
@itotallycare9 ай бұрын
Hi there, this looked like an amazing trip. Enjoyed watching. I'm curious about how the kayaks have held up for you specifically Navigator. I'm interested in getting one but it having a wooden frame makes me nervous, doesn't it soak up water and rot? I imagine the wood is treated to repel water though right? Is the skin tough? And what about the hinges (frame connectors), are they solid or become loose with time, require replacements, tightening etc? Thanks!
@OutdoorFoto9 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for your nice comment. The Navigator needs some more maintenance (then the Argos) that is, before the trip I oiled it (linseed). Therefore the frame is far more durable (than the Argo). It does not soak up water or rot, it is ash and thus treated (linseed) it is perfect for the job. Of course you must make sure - during and especially after the trip, to not let water stand in the boat (for long). The skin is though, we landed on pebble beaches no problem but of course you can always have rough conditions and in case of an emergency (a hole) we have repair with us (comes with the boat) which works even outside to repair (as we did on a training trip back home). The hinges stay solid, never had a problem.
@itotallycare9 ай бұрын
@@OutdoorFoto Fantastic, thank you for the information! One more thing if I may, for how long have you had your Navigator?

@@itotallycare 5 years now. Did another longer expedition with it (partly) around Corsica. And this summer I take my Navigator again back to Greenland.
@itotallycare9 ай бұрын
@@OutdoorFoto Well 5 years is promising. The Navigator is quite expensive so I need to make sure it wont break on me after just one or two years. I watched your Corsica expedition too and enjoyed it very much. I paus at moments where the Navigator is in view since that was my initial motivation, I was looking for videos on it and found yours. I'll subscribe for another Navigator adventure.
