Nicely done! That mirror finish does do a couple things for the blade... For one, it slides through whatever you're cutting with less resistance making it cut MUCH better! Second is RUST! Rust only likes to form in pits in the metal, the mirror polish has very few if any pits so it's very rust resistant.

@@nicholasstgelais2112 depends on which polish is used, most will wash off easy... There's always hot bluing if you like blue, then 100% (edible grade) carnauba wax. You can use an oven to hot blue/temper, or even a stovetop if you carefully start from the tang and heat the spine slowly working towards the tip. Just don't let the tip turn purple or it'll want to snap off later!

Just wanted to say. Thank you . You got me started in this hobby. I watched this video last year and since then I have bought and or made tools to have a nice start in making knives . I tried to forge a spike over the winter but my hand crank blower from 1902, One of the bearings came loose right when a spike was just getting hot enough to start moving the steel , the 400 champion blower stopped turning.. As always, excellent video. I appreciate the fact that you used just the grinder to make the knife because I don't have the money right now to buy the more expensive tools at this point. But I do have a paint can forge, grinder, drill press, and canola oil. Keep making the videos on the layman level. Great work.

Nice work man! Working on my first now. I took an old hammer drill bit and used my coal forge to flatten it. Shaped and ground with my grinder and belt grinder. Now I need to get some canola oil and a magnet!

I just found this video. EXCELLENT. I subscribed. I think it is the best video I've seen on KZbin in regards to "explaining"/demonstrating what and when things need to be done. (I've been watching KZbin vids for over a year) Such a simple concept, yet SO many videos leave out basic information. You did not and it is very, very helpful. KEEP IT UP. yes but you would need more than one torch to heat the entire blade to red you would run into the issue of having an uneven heat but for tempering one torch is plenty

I use flap disks for the bevel. And have used 1/16" cutting disks for cuved blades. For shaping the handles i use a flap disk followed wth hand sanding. I love that angle grinder. 😊

Ego loves a critic lol I've been guilty of such. I've learned so much, far much more from KZbin videos than school and college. Skills they just don't teach you and you need. Use the tools we have or can borrow to get the job done. I even learned locksmithing and making my own picks. Also hydroponic growing before it was cool in college and school. Locksmiths are a majority of rip off merchants, destroying the locks and replacing them when they could have just picked them. Even safes are simple to open if someone asked me. Not for crime!

$10-15 Harbor Freight grinder, some oil for quenching, and a place to start a fire. Get some scrap steel somewhere and you are good to go! Less than $20 all in. Work your way up from there.

basically in China,there are quite a few of teenagers like knife making,even myself when I was in high school,I buy all the tools and materials--until I found that my roommate was annoyed by the electools noise,also the power tools cause too much power bills(-.-) but I still enjoy watching others doing knife making especially handmaking.thumb up for your video!

When you Trace the design of your knife into the steel you can use spray paint and just spray all the way around the knife design in the paper.

I can vouch for the danger of a table saw. My left hand is missing a couple of fingers. When fingers and saw blades meet, the blade will always win. Use the safety equipment always, and be careful!

Very cool video. I make knives myself like most everyone else , using forge and anvil, and belt sander. But ur making a knife with just a grinder brought back fond memories of when I first started. I only had a grinder and a couple files to start with. Hand polishing like u did. Everyone asked me how I chromed it. Lol. Very inspirational video bud. If you add a good file to your tool list you can cut plunge lines in with a file and then grind to them with the angle grinder.

I use a thin coat of slow dry epoxy before I wrap my handles. A little heat from my heat gun to tighten it up at the end. Beautiful knife! Great video

I don't think I would ever use epoxy. Wrapping can be pretty secure if you do it right. You would also still be able to use the paracord for survival/camping needs if you don't use epoxy. And you would still have the option to change out the paracord for a different color or wrapping scheme, in case you just want a different look or if the handle gets dirty.

I will make such a knife as i will go to education mostly about forging but also much about using modern day tools, seems simple, the rough part of the knife to do with angle grinder seems easy and is known to me as i have used such a lot. The rest seems just making it look good and removing scratches by contunious swiping with sandpaper, good educational video
