Glad I'm not the only one who notices how loud the milwaukee bandsaw is, and thats coming from a plumber who puts up with some pretty loud noises on a daily basis. I really enjoyed your editing style and want to thank you for making my goal of completing my first knife a realistic one. 6:05 You shouldn clamp it that way because heat travels up and you get uneven cooling, which later in the quenching can cause warpage. best way to cool it is in a vise with the point up. Same tule aplies when heating a knife - edge is always up and vertical. After quenching you can gently clamp the knife in a vise verticaly, it eliminates chanses of warpage. There is a good reason why every swordsmith does it the way i described it. Great knife! Keep up the good videos and great pointy things coming up!

Ive tried it many ways tip up tip down and horizontal. I haven't noticed a difference. Not saying one is better than the other just that it hasnt made a difference for me. It's always at the oil line. Unless i do an edge quench then it could be in the blade. Not talking about big warps very small ones most wouldnt notice unless you had a flat surface. Just some thoughts🤷‍♂️ Thanks my friend 👍

Way wrong. He is normalizing mill steel, it's not like there is a crazy amount of stress in it. It's not forged, it doesn't overly matter. And the "correct" way to slowly cool a blade is submersing it in something like vermiculite to slowly cool. I use 1084 frequently and normalize by just setting it on the anvil. It's more about reaching the critical temp and relaxing, not going for a crazy anneal. The longer the blade the more likely a warp. The thinner the blade, the more likely a warp. Fixing it out of the quench is easy in a jig like he used.

That was amazing, not only the knife but your video editing is fun,funny and educational....I mean I think you know what your doing. BUT it still looks like you know what your doing so that's important.

I am not a smith, however when you were normalizing your blade, I noticed three things. First by placing the blade sideways in the vice it allowed the weight of the blade to droop while still hot, perhaps if it was placed spine down you would find fewer warps. Second the vice clap is placed precisely at your warp during the normalizing. I think the steel is cooling at a different rate where the vice is clapping the steel versus where it is not, because the vice is working as a heat sink. Third, if you insulate the blade and slow the thermal cycle by placing it in perlite or between two pieces of wood and clapping the wood together, you may eliminate any warping and refine the grain structure of the steel a bit more. I am just a truck driver take what I say with a grain of salt. I just noticed this and you complained that you always or frequently experience the same warp and I believe the things I listed above are why or how you might fix your problem. Great videos. My first one was your 24 dollar Damascus blade videos and it was awesome. Good content so far keep it up.

Hi Bud, I got 3 tips for ya. Many shops have grinding rooms with doors and separate air just to keep the metal dust at bay. Any machinery or electronics that the metal dust gets in is history! Some people put grinders on wheeled tables or carts!!! Push it outside. The metal dust is good for the plants! On the handles. Surfboard builders will epoxy the cloth to the Board and let it dry. Then use another coat of epoxy or two coats to clear coat it. It comes out tougher than nails but smooth and slick. You can use a longer setting and lightly flame it with propane or alcohol to make any bubbles pop. No butane, matches, or candles they leave soot and turn stuff black! When you get the nack of it down it’s a great surface. It’s deep reflections, smooth to touch, good to grip, and tough. You For epoxy or fiberglass that does not set from cold or wet conditions, warm it gently with an incandescent light bulb. A little heat and time! I have set it in the sun, but I live in Florida. Great show! Good luck!
