It's too bad you can't buy aftermarket panels that really fit. Lucky you're working with masters of the trade. Great video series by the way.

Too people watching this. The outside bumper brackets. There is a middle bolt that does not go through top fender flange but does go through bottom. That way you can bolt it to the lower valance before mounting this stuff and it will stay. This is key when you put stuff together painted. You do not want to be trying to stick that part in after mounting fender and valance.

Thanks. For that matter there is a filler piece missing in this assembly video that goes between parts and you sort of need to have it on the correct top/bottom of those bumper brackets. I have not seen other videos of this series so I assume this is "race car" and that filler piece is not vital, still...

I know by the time you read this comment you would have already had the car put together but you do know that all that sheet metal has to be scuffed primer and trim painted before you start putting them together don’t you? That black coating is not a primer and the metal will rust through.
@Lethalgarage2 жыл бұрын
We had to dry for the car before any of that, so that way we could see gaps and address them.

I'm doing this to my 81. Is it normal to prep and paint the inside of all the new parts or just hit what would be on the outside seen and in the weather?
@philipfoster373 Жыл бұрын
@@validcore No not really but all the exposed surfaces that you can see like fender wheel openings and the door jams have to be painted prior to assembly. The most important thing is to scuff the panels inside and out and prime with a epoxy primer or metal etching primer before you paint anything. The e-coating on your new parts is not a primer it is just a chemical dip to coat the panels so that they do not rust while is storage and shipment but it will rust through if you do not apply the proper primer. Some people just use red scotch Brite on the panels before they put their primer on to make sure that it sticks properly some people completely remove the E coat especially from the outside surfaces but once you have applied your epoxy primer you are good to go for painting but if you ever break through the surface to the metal and have bare metal you need to apply more Epoxy primer to cover it up. I have a 68 Camaro in my garage that needs full restoration someone has already put quarter panel patch panels on it on both sides but they did not prep them and primer them and the whole quarter panel is nothing but solid rust. Since they are only patch panels and wasn’t installed properly in the first place I have to remove them and the rest of the quarter panel and I’m going to replace them with new replacement quarter panels. Here is a trick that I like to do with front fenders and other panels before I installed them is on all of the backside that is not exposed I like to paint them with that spray can bedliner so they are not near as noisy as if they were just plain metal, a body deadener if you will. Good luck with your build!

@philipfoster373 thank you so much for clearing that up. I plan to do it right, but I am going to be driving for a few months with new front end and fenders I'll paint before I install them. But at least a few months before I paint the entire car. Definitely not wanting rust on the new metal.
