My step-dads parents house still had an outhouse up until the late 70s in the middle of town. And I'm surprised you didn't tell the old quarter story! There were two little boys using the outhouse after church. The shorter of the two was showing off the two shiny quarters he got from his grandmother when he dropped one down the hole. He stood there for a moment and then tossed the other in. "Why did you do that?" asked the taller boy. "I wasn't gonna reach my arm down that hole for just one quarter"

This was really a good one that made me recall a story from my U.S.M.C. Days. Out training one week, one of our marines dropped his K-Bar into the latrine but was able to get it out and clean it. Later that day when we were having our mid-day MRE, our Staff Sergeant ask if anyone had a knife (I think you can see where I’m going with this). Well, it was THAT marine who offered him his K-Bar and I asked “was that the knife you dropped in the sh&*#er? Haha 🤣 the tongue lashing he received from the SSGT burned the bark off of every tree in the vicinity. I think those trees are still smoking to this day!! Lol

Uncle Dan, that reminds me of a story I heard from an old friend of many years ago (not outhouse related, but thought you might appreciate it) - Don't know the location but it sounded hot, humid and had a beach - anyway they were on the beach, and had stopped. The SSGT had them standing at attention, and a marine swatted a mosquito - The Sergeant was on him and in his face in a heart beat, blistering the air. This was back around Vietnam days so the Sergeants could get pretty aggressive I have heard.... Anyway the Sergeant was yelling at this kid that the mosquito was on USMC property, so he had killed a Marine mosquito! - Anyway they had to fall out, hump back to barracks change into a new uniform, hump back to the beach, find the dead mosquito and bury it with honors.... Ricky wasn't one to make things up.

I heard of a gent who had 2 silver quarters fall from his pocket as he was re-arranging his clothes. You guessed where they went. He promptly opened the door for light and fresh air, pulled a $10 bill from his money clip and sent it to the same place. His Mrs. saw the conclusion of the ten spot toss and gave him "what for!" He replied, as he rolled up his sleeves "you sure don't think I'm gonna go fishing around in there for only 50 cents, do you?!"

My great grandfather was a carpenter who built and sold outhouses as a specialty in the late 19th century and early 20th. It was said he made really good money at it before central plumbing became popular. A thing to note about outhouses was figuring out where to place them. Not only did you want them away from (and down stream from) your water source, but you wanted it far enough from the house that the summer winds wouldn't bring in the _hot summer fragrance_ into the home on those hot days when all the house windows were open, but also not so far away as to make it difficult to use in inclement weather. One thing that almost everyone did was stack their firewood between the house and the outhouse. That way whenever anyone went out to conduct their business they would also bring a small armful of wood, just a few sticks would do, back in with them to feed the fire, in that way the firewood in the house never ran down and no one person was stuck always bringing in wood for the fire. And that meant _everyone_ no matter didn't matter if you were a bank president or a three year old child, if you used the facility you brought back a few sticks. My grandfather used to claim going to the outhouse and NOT bringing back a few sticks was nearly a whoopin' offense, and folks would be shamed into going back out to get those few sticks. They used to call bringing the wood back from going to the bathroom _paying the toll._ They often referred to the outhouse building as _The Toll-house._ Makes you think twice about those cookies, huh?

I grew up with an outhouse in central Virginia in the 50's. I guess I was 6-7 years old before we got indoor plumbing installed. The outhouse was down in the woods, maybe 30 yards or so from the house as best I remember it, but it was a long time ago and I was just a kid. Even after the indoor plumbing got installed, the old outhouse stayed for years. I suppose it finally just fell down. My grandfather and grandmother had an outhouse long after that. I guess it was late 60's or 70's before they got an indoor bathroom.

I think the top one was offset. I mean...otherwise you are right about being on the top story.
@arailway88095 жыл бұрын
It did not have to be offset. They built a baffle that redirected the flow on its way down so that it passed behind the occupant on the ground. They had to halt building the bond fire at Texas A&M one year, because some old lady recognized her outhouse resting on top. Outhouses were the favorite haunts of dirt daubers and black widow spiders. You had to be careful, even in there. I once knew a man, who as a boy, convinced a friend to stand in an outhouse and fire a shotgun down the outhouse hole. Forget the later accomplishments of Wernher van Braun. That outhouse flew.

The other guy says 'What the hell you doing?' and the first guy replies 'You don't think I'm going down there just for a sandwich do ya?' Ok, one more and leave. Two guys are in a restroom in adjacent stalls. One guy's done and realizes there's no paper. He asks the second for any extra paper. The second guy says 'Sorry, just enough for me. There's a pause. The first guy asks, almost panicking, 'Got a credit card, or anything?' The first guy says 'Forget it!' Then there's a long pause and the first guy asks 'Got two fives for a ten?'

Now, as I sit here on my computer, just a few hundred feet from the original homestead, I marvel at how much things have changed, but when I walked out my front door and stepped in a cow patty the other day, I realize how some things never change!

Santee, I wear size 15 shoes. Any advice one where to get/modify boots for not the price of custom made?
@ArizonaGhostriders6 жыл бұрын
I am seeing size 15 square toed boots for $100-$150 in stores like Sears and Cabelas. The ones with the Motorcycle harness look (Dingo, Durango, etc.) are rugged and the harness can be taken off. If you want stovepipe style in size15, go to fcsutler.com/fcshoes.asp and they have some square toed ones that run about $285. Yeah, those can be PRICEY!

Imagine if you drop your six shooter down The Whole. You gotta get it back but that would not be fun.
@ArizonaGhostriders6 жыл бұрын
Funny you should say that. One of our guys had us believing he did that exact thing in a porta-potty at an event. We were even gonna lend him a firearm until he told us he was kidding.

HA! Well, if one can sit on a heated toilet seat in the winter while watching television....things have definitely changed.
@jimf19644 жыл бұрын
Lol, only talking about outhouses......at least I am. You don't have tv and heated seats in your outhouse, do you?!😲

How does the top story outhouse work without nailing the bottom story in that 2 story outhouse system?

It is offset.
