+Lucy G Yes, he's originally from New Galloway D&G, but lived in Edinburgh for a while. His accent changes depending on who he is talking to. Much more Scottish when talking to Scottish people, more English when doing interviews and very clipped when speaking to Americans etc.

My only shock at first, which I'm now over, was his hair color. The books are very detailed in his appearance and they're always mentioning his flaming red hair especially in the 2nd and third books where he's known as "Red Jamie" and has to hide his hair. But besides that small detail I believe the creative team behind the Outlander series is doing a great job and Sam really fits the bill. Props to everyone involved!

DestinyK This could be because of his accent. He doesn't have a strong Scottish accent (think Craig Ferguson or Sean Connery) because the part of Scotland he grew up in is near England. Plus he's lived in London for a long time. As Jamie, his accent is so thick and when you hear Sam speak one might think he's English.

It happens a lot when you start to hang around with people with different accents, my Australian friend came to the U.S about 7 years ago and has completely lost her accent. It sometimes happens to me too whenever I go to the UK, if I stay there long enough some of my pronunciation of certain words sound british automatically. Look at Cat, she's Irish but has been living in los Angeles for the past few years which is why she has a halfway Irish and American accent. I guess it all depends on your environment and all the people you surround yourself with. You pick things up eventually and learn to adapt, it's human nature.

Being from Edinburgh myself I can tell you he sounds like that most likely because he was privately educated for a while and went to the Royal Conservatoire where they will more than likely encouraged him to sound more English (they don't much like Scots accents in the film/tv industry). It's kind of a shame he has felt the need to change his accent like that.

Julienne The character is from the Highlands which is a very thick accent whereas he sounds more like he's from the borders which is a softer, more Anglicised sound. Still 100% Scottish, just a different dialect (much like Brooklyn American is very different from a Texas American accent) x

Couldn't give a flying fig if he sounds somewhat British in person - especially since I've always loved that accent too. The important thing is he's an actor and he does a fine job bringing Jaime to life. And, you would have to lead a pretty sheltered life to think 21st century Scots walk around in kilts all the time. While we have our share of naive people here in the US, we have not cornered the market on them - if you think that you have most likely proven my point.

I have been reading the books since I picked up a copy of Cross Stitch in 1994 thinking the mystery involved some embroidery. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but then I got hooked. I do embroidery, sewing and bobbin lace making; in fact, most needle crafts. I'm partial to long hair in general too, mine is waist length. Hope to see Claire with long hair in future episodes, that is how I visualised her, in the 1700's. she would have grown her hair. Yes, Sam's hair does look a great red when it catch the light.
