I loved hearing Roger's thought's they were so funny 😂 Claire leaving Scotland to go to the aid of Lord John's nephew is nonsense but I think a lot of the story is severely cut due to time. I got the impression that the production team didn't know there was going to be a season 8 when making this season hence the rush and changing story lines. I saw an interview with Kirsten who plays Jenny and she said that when Jenny was originally cast it was between her and Laura Donnelly obviously Laura got the part 😊

I agree! The storyline which calls for Claire to make yet another extremely risky transatlantic trip in order to perform surgery on Lord John's nephew was absurd for the reason you both discussed, as well as some other reasons. While I haven't read the books, I imagine that in the book his nephew was probably injured while Claire was in the vicinity and so could be called upon to help soon after he was injured. He would have very little time left if she didn't operate on him within hours after the injury. The storyline should have been discarded rather than be filmed and I wonder why it wasn't. Sometimes we have to just laugh and suspend belief! 😂😉 I love the series!
@edo48965 күн бұрын
I don't know why they didn't just keep it as one of her grandchildren like it was in the books. Or if they had to change it make it actually b Marsali or Fergus who were injured as this would be a more urgent and personal reason for Claire to leave her dying family member and risk the journey.

I haven't read any of the books, so since you asked...YES, I was very surprised when Jamie opened the door to find Joanie and when Roger knocked at the same door and was greeted by Jamie's father! I loved how they executed those two scenes! The suspense was great! I was so excited when Jamie and the family were interrupted by the knock on the door. As he approached the door my mind was racing at the thought of how shocked Roger, Jamie and Claire were going to be to see each other again. As happy as I was to see all grown up Joanie played by the same actress, I was also heartbroken for Roger. Initially, the actor playing Brian Fraser looked familiar, but my mind was a bit scrambled at the point as I was processing these two surprises. THEN when he said his name my mind was 🤯🤯 And I realized, OMG, they landed in the wrong time period! They couldn't have staged that better. I didn't find anything in the episode confusing.

Carol, I was totally commiserating with your situation. I'm about your age, and I lost my wife three years ago. I haven't really "dated", either, and the whole thing is kind of a bummer, because you're always asking yourself the same questions: "Is it too soon? Should I be doing this? Do I even want to do this? Is it important, or should I forget it?" You basically get stuck in a situation where you have to worry and think about these things - the kind of things you thought you'd never have to deal with again after you got married. It's certainly not ideal, believe me. I get it.

So delighted to be with the two of you again. I have missed hearing your banter and entertaining discussion of the Jamie and Claire story. I am so glad you are back. I do agree with Carol that Ian needed to make his own choice about staying with his father and not go with Claire on yet another voyage. I have very strong feelings about this point. To leave your dying father who you haven't seen in 10 years and go on a journey to find a woman who may or may not be receptive and available.... it makes no sense. Also, Buck's mother is Geillis and Dougal..... so Buck and Roger showing up at her door is very interesting. Remember Geillis pregnant being carried on her back to be burned at the stake? Also, I thought Claire's leaving Jamie yet again to go to Philadelphia to tend to Lord John's nephew was ridiculous. I remember reading in the book that when it was Henri-Christian that was ill it made some sense for Claire to leave Scotland... and Jamie... but to go because of Lord John's nephew.... ?????? I do understand that for the storyline to flow Claire and Jamie need to part... again. What comes to pass in future episodes as a result is WILD.

My thoughts: wish J&C could have had at least 1 longer intimate exchange in the master’s bedroom, wish Jamie would have at least gave Joanie a hug ( you can tell she loves him like a Da), thought there Was really no other way storywise to get Claire back to the States. @peteg4757 күн бұрын
Yeah, I get that and I agree. You can sort of imagine a much longer conversation about it if it's in a book. With more detail. Haven't read the books, don't know how it's handled. The biggest takeaway for Claire to explain to them is, "The stones are magic, I'm not. I'm just a regular person. The first time I came through was an accident."
@peteg4757 күн бұрын
Re: 'messing with Roger's timeline' Again, haven't read the books, but it kinda makes sense. When Claire (except the first time), Roger or Brianna travel, they have a force of will to know exactly to what time they want to go. The stones "sense" that, I guess. But why would Rob Cameron use the stones and automatically be dropped in the exact same time (1778 or whatever)? Then when Roger and Buck are chasing him, they are mentally signalling the stones that they want to go wherever Cameron and Jemmy went. So that's where (and when) they end up. Clever.

The "Lord John's nephew" thing isn't even the biggest problem. Explain this to me: It takes six weeks on average to cross the Atlantic in the 18th Century. So the guy gets shot with a musket ball, Lord John sends letters out to where he thinks Claire might be, she has to get the letter, decide to go back and get to Philadelphia. At absolute minimum, it takes all of this north of three months. So the nephew has a bullet in his body for three months and Claire is desperately needed to save him? No sepsis? Some war vets have bullets in them that are never removed and the person lives, but the whole thing makes no sense to me. In the real world, Claire is going to get there and the nephew will be dead and buried. A boy with tonsillitis for three months makes slightly more sense, maybe. Am I missing something?
@Myoutlanderpurgatory7 күн бұрын
It's like we say in the video--clearly Henri-Christian wasn't an option--for whatever reason. So the next best option (that gets Claire to Philly) is....???? I honestly have no clue. Maybe it doesn't even involve a sick person? Maybe Lord John himself is in some danger? She might go back for that.
@peteg4757 күн бұрын

They created a major stupidity issue when they concocted the guy shot in the gut. Anyone shot in the gut back then might have a few days of life left in them with one week at the absolute maximum though he would be in agony by that time. Considering it took a month for the written message to reach them by ship and then it would take another month for Claire to travel back to Philadelphia makes the guy living with muskat balls in his gut probably with ruptured bowel living at least two months. That is 100% impossible and I used to be Director of EMS. More, any untrained person today and certainly their medical advisor should have put the nix on this stupid story script. It's so bad it breaks you out of the story as you watch this episode and wonders how they could make this big of a mistake. They should fire their medical advisor.

I don't understand why this series has wig issues. Maybe it has to do with the budget or something. There have been so many bad wigs.

So happy to see you ladies! Loved this episode, Steven Cree was amazing, and I thought the make up was good, he looked so gray compared to the others. Btw, they totally filtered Jenny’s face to make her look younger! Go back and look! But my goodness, get her a better wig it was awful and distracting! I thought it was weird Jamie never hugged Joanie, he was cold to her I thought. Lastly, can someone submit Carol to be the next Golden Bachelorette! She would be awesome on that show, just sayin!😂

Jamie's hair has faded over the years from his coppery/mahogany curls to the strawberry blonde he has now because that's process of redheads going white. Redheads don't turn gray. Too much pigment. Turning white happens gradually. Sometimes, never fully.

In the book, Ian and Young Ian went for a walk. The decision for Young Ian to go back unfolded in a more realistic fashion that way. In the show, it seemed very rushed. I think that is what made it seem like he was being thrown out without being heard.

So wonderful to watch your vlog again, not to mention the new episode! So I have a few things to add….in no particular order: 1) Ned Gowan WAS in the book in the scene with the new contract. He’s in his late 90s. I don’t know why the actor wasn’t there. Maybe he’s doing something else and wasn’t available. (He’s like in his 70s, by the way! Lol Oh, and the actress Nell Hudson who plays Leoghaire….get ready ….is only 34! My husband thinks she looks too young!) 2) In the books, Claire DOES operate on Lord John’s nephew, but it had nothing to do with her return. As you said, it was because of Henri Christian, who is also Leoghaire’s BIOLOGICAL grandson.. 3) In the book, the healer was a time traveling physician who produced blue light, like Master Raymond. It wasn’t Geilis. But she does appear….Buck knows who his parents are, because Roger TOLD him. 4) Roger met Geilis TWICE, at the university and later at a bar. He said his name was Roger WAKEFIELD. Hmm, I don’t recall if they meet in this time period. I read this a long time ago….but I thought Roger tried to avoid her. He did SEE her, maybe from afar? I just don’t recall. Anyway, I also loved the episode. But I can’t get used to the new Jenny. Argh. I kept closing my eyes in order to envision old Jenny! I loved the scene with the 2 Ians talking. Yes, of course, the new WEE Ian is his son! 😁

My solution would have Rachel and Rollo sent to Scotland, stay at Lallybrach until Ian's passing. He could have spent time with the family. They could have had either Jamie go back with Claire or have a Kinsman ac ompany her to America, as Women were not supposed to travel alone.

Brian was played by the same actor. Andrew Whipp. When I first saw Brian I didn't recognize him I think he gained some weight since the first season. I love me some Ian Sr. too. I try to watch any Steven Cree work. I think he's then Sam. Ian died before Claire left in the books. Legwhore looked older in season 3-4. I agree with with Carol she tries to kill the both of them at least twice. She only wants his money. I think they deleted too many scenes with the Buck part.

1st - those comments about the cold open compressing 100s of pages and exposition and narrative into 2 minutes - those were from me. 😊 Nell Hudson brought depth to Laoghaire. She was great. I just about had time-jump whiplash from the edits/ cuts, but it was brilliant how they wove it all together. Kristin Atherton really captured the essence of Jenny. Loved her. Wigs: Jamie's was great! (Red hair tends to fade more than switch to gray.) Jenny's wigs (younger and older versions) were NOT great. Bad, in fact. Older Jenny's wig also should have had more gray. (But so should Claire's inconsistent wigs LJG's nephew storyline -100% medically implausible. That was the weakest part of the episode. Yuck. I realize the writers needed a plot device to get Claire back to Philadelphia. If she and JAMMF aren't separated, we wouldn't get to "Carnal Knowledge ", right? And we do want that! But, at least we will be spared Henri Christian's demise, I guess. How did Old Ian still have a tartan sash to wear? Wasn't the diskilting act still in effect in Great Britain? But, I was crying as I watched the Ians being parted for good. 😢 Geillis reveal at the end - I was SCREAMING "Oh my God ! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!" Great job, Outlander writers, director, and editors! Finally, it is soooo good to have y'all back and laugh with you and hear about Tom. Love you guys!!!!

My sister had the same color hair as Jamie and it changed over her lifetime. Bright red as a child and then it went blond as she aged. That's very normal for redheads. They don't go grey. They go blonde. I actually think they are using Sam's natural hair now. Especially if you look around the hairline. It looks very natural. I was surprised you didn't discuss Jamie's comment about leaving the letters for Brianna at the Bank of Edinburgh. Did we ever find out how Bri and Roger got the letters?

I don' t think they came directly from the bank--weren't they all in a box in the Reverend's garage?

@Myoutlanderpurgatory I forget. And I don't know if that was ever made clear. Did the bank in Edinburgh just archive them for centuries? How did Brianna end up with them at Lallybroch??? YES, Claire and Jamie could have reminded them about the time Claire advised them to plant potatoes and explain why she gave them that advice. That's just one of many examples of "mysterious" things that happened involving Jenny and Old Ian that could now be explained! As soon as family investments in France were mentioned, we all knew that Claire needed to warn them about the French Revolution, but how? Thank goodness they had the plot shift to the knocks on the door to distract us from how underwhelming that scene was. A few seasons ago it was very frustrating when Jamie persuaded Claire to NOT share her origins with Jenny and Ian when she wanted to share it, especially since he was her witness at Craigh Na Dun and could help her! Now, after everything that has happened, she also has Young Ian as her witness, but they didn't give him ANY lines to support her story! In my opinion this scene landed with a thud and could have been written much better than it was.

I guess there was just SO MUCH to get through in this ep, there was no way they could sort of sit and luxuriate in that scene a bit...
@amritawhitman81126 күн бұрын
@@Myoutlanderpurgatory I don't think it was necessary to spend A LOT of time on the scene. I just think it was a missed opportunity. Even if, as you discussed, she just reminded them about the potatoes, as just one example and maybe add another example and then give Ian and Jamie a line or two to support her there would be more substance to that scene. If she explained how she went back to the future and became a surgeon, she could then remind them that's why she had the tools, experience and medicine to operate and save Jamie after Laoghaire shot him. Jenny urging her in another scene to go save Lord John's nephew would have made more sense than it did. Oh well!

Hello everybody .
@amritawhitman81127 күн бұрын
Thank you for doing this recap. While I know you both enjoy the series very much, it sounds like you might be more into the books than the series. Of course there's no harm in that, but listening to you I can see how some of the details might be blurry and confusing. #1. Yes, that was young Jenny, the same actress as older Jenny who rode up to Roger and her father Brian to tell Roger that his "kinsman, William MacKenzie was taken ill on his way to Lallybroch" and he asked for Roger. He asked for Roger because he knows Roger went to Lallybroch when they parted. Of course we don't know yet if he found Rob and Jemmy after he and Roger left Craigh Na Dun. If he did, maybe they fought, Jemmy ran away, and Buck (William) was wounded during the brawl....? #2. Remember the guy Roger and Brian were talking to before Jenny arrived on horseback? Brian introduced him to Roger as John Murray. When she arrived, John tells her that his son was not there if that's who she's looking for. Of course that would be Ian!! Remember Jamie, Jenny and Ian grew up together. However, the good news seems to be that Rob has been seen wandering around in 20th century clothing, so that explains why Roger and Buck arrived in this time period. Things we will learn in upcoming episodes 🍿 Question #1: Why did Rob go to this time period, which looks like it might be 1738 or so? The gold he's looking for hasn't even arrived in Scotland yet from France to support the Jacobite uprising which will start several years from this time period. Besides, Roger expected Rob and Jemmy would arrive in the time period they left and then travel to Fraser's Ridge to look for the gold. Question #2: Where's Jemmy? One of my favorite parts of S7E9: It was wild that Jenny told Roger they don't have a healer in the area but she directed him to the local herbalist, and who should open the door? Geillis Duncan! Even though I knew to expect her at some point in the season, when she opened the door I gasped and then I cracked up when Roger said "Oh Christ!" 🤣🤯😳 Of course he recognized her from when he met her in Scotland with Brianna at the pub, which happened after Brianna met her at the university. Brianna and Claire arrived at Craigh Na Dun just as she went through the stones. THAT'S what convinced both of them that Claire was telling the truth and this whole time traveling business is a real! And how wild is it that Buck is about to meet his mother? As we know, Dougal gave him as an infant to a couple in the MacKenzie clan and then helped her escape. Roger and Jemmy are their descendants! That might be the key to why they are in this time period and not 20+ years in the future. This story just gets wilder with every season! I love it!

It's actually another reason why Roger & Buck ended up in the time they did. I think this episode hinted at it, but it's subtle and easily missed by non-book readers... but I'm hoping it means they will include the reason in the show.
@amritawhitman81126 күн бұрын
@@eschradI haven't read the books but by "It's actually another reason..." do you mean Roger and Buck have landed in this time period because they are meant to have some important encounters with their two ancestors, Geillis and Dougal, but not find Rob and Jemmy? The episode 10 teaser scenes with them and Geillis certainly look interesting! 😳😬 I just found some info posted on the Outlander Fandom Wiki about Rob from My Own Heart's Blood and An Echo In The Bone that is completely different from what we've been led to believe has happened in both episodes 708 and 709! Apparently neither Rob nor Jemmy have traveled to the 18th century and Rob has locked Jemmy up in the tunnel where Brianna was locked up when he and the crew pulled that hazing stunt. Again, the episode 10 teaser makes sense then. Then I wonder who is the "fairy man" dressed in modern clothes? Is it Friday night yet?🤣😂

The other disappointing reason that they made Lord John's nephew the reason for Claire going back instead of the book reason of her grandson, Henri-Christian, needing her... is that in the book Laoghaire determines she has to humble herself and go hat-in-hand to Claire and bribe her to return to save HER (Laoghaire's) grandson, not comprehending that H-C is also Claire's grandson and Claire would do anything to help him, no graveling from Laoghaire needed. The bribe Laoghaire offers is that, in exchange for Claire's help, she will marry Joey and release Jamie from the alimony payments. So even though Joan did go to Jamie in the books for his help, it's not Jamie working out that Laoghaire could keep Balriggan that convinces her to marry Joey (who is not a dwarf, but has one leg shorter than the other and a twisted spine... scoliosis, maybe?)... it's her offer to Claire to do so in exchange for helping H-C that resolves things. Laoghaire never would have given up those alimony payments otherwise. Claire keeps the fact that she would have helped H-C in any case to herself and gets one over on Laoghaire/relieves Jamie of the alimony (basically blackmail) payments in one move.

As for the hair color..... I was told that red haired people do not turn a gray. Their hair turns lighter and ends up looking blond.
@amritawhitman81126 күн бұрын
I have redheads in my family and their hair did turn gray but much, much later in their lives, and very gradually. The wig they're using for Jamie looks about right to me. His hair is no where near as red as it was when he was younger and that's because the color is gradually changing as he gets older.
@eschrad6 күн бұрын
Yes, my family has a boatload of redheads. My brother's hair has at times looked less red when his strands were cut shorter (military school buzz cut) vs. when it has grown out. (And was very coppery again in his 20s when he grew his hair long for Locks of Love.) As they age, the red loses its vibrancy... the coppery red fades to a duller red that can appear more ruddy brown when not in the sun. And then it eventually lightens as individual strands lose their pigment and become white and mix with the still pigmented strands, giving a sandy or strawberry blond appearance. Eventually , it just becomes white, not gray. Redheads who spend a lot of time in the sun without a hat or other SPF protection will also dull their red quicker.

Lord John's nephew had 2 balls in his abdomen. These balls would have ripped through the bowel and stool would be in the abdominal cavity. The cavity and other organs would be severely damaged and badly infected. Clare would take too long to cross the ocean to save the nephew. Plus she would have to have antibiotics. If she was there when the abdominal wall had been compromised; she possibly could have saved him by removing the balls and cleaning out the abdomen to get the stool out of the belly. Really there is no hope of saving him!!! 😓
