I went through something similar to what Brianna felt. At the time I was too young to understand what it meant, but by the time I was old enough to, I resented my mother in some level and totally rejected my biological father. It's not easy discovering you've been lied to your entire life and that you were never supposed to know the truth. She had it even worse, image your mom saying you have an 18th century dad. You'd surely think she's gone mad. She wasn't immature, she was hurt, and people say things they don't mean when they're hurt. But life moves on, she found it in herself to forgive Claire and accept her reality, as have I

True, but it's realistic. She's loyal to her father, she feels her mother slept around on him, and she learned that she's the illegitimate daughter of some guy who apparently knocked up her mother before sending her back to her husband. Honestly, with all that, I think she took it fairly well - no insults, no screaming. It would be asking a bit much for her to go "ah well, I guess there was some weird coincidence where your first marriage was sort of timed out of existence and you had to marry some other guy to be safe from the evil identical ancestor of my not-quite-real-father".

I think it's a mixture of how the character was written and also the acting. I dont think Sophie is a bad actress but I think at the beggining it was difficult for her to do an american accent. In s3 her acting wasnt that good but in s5 it got so much better. (Just my opinion)

I wish the direction for Brianna's realization to be more complex. In the tv series it was a frustratingly lost opportunity to behold. We are more than our rage around our trauma, and she could have been an example for that. Can you imagine a different scenario? One where she learns skills and to direct her passions so they are less of a weakness and we would have grown with her in a sense maybe? I may not write amazing stories, yet this amazing production missed the mark for character development here. I dislike the how flat they made her character thus the acting falls short linked to that shortcoming.

You're not alone in this, Jocelyn; however, I don't understand why people want the storylines in the series (and Outlander isn't the only serial drama where it happens) to be some kind of behaviour manual for a woke life. I prefer the messiness of characters, their flaws and how they develop in their narrative arc. When there's no conflict in a story there's no story, nothing to invest in and nothing to push our emotions to inflated levels and no collective catharsis possible. Unlike others, I like how Brianna tells her mother she wishes she were the one dead, not Frank. It completely fits for someone in the middle of grief who has learned a great secret and betrayal, who has been "Daddy's girl" all her life and is not connected to her mother all that closely. The lie Claire was forced to live by Frank continues to damage her after his death. Completely in keeping with Frank's attempts to control Claire under the guise of "love" and to solidify Claire's repression throughout their marriage--trying to get her orders changed, the second "honeymoon" all about his historical research and not focused on her at all. In keeping with the times and the expectations of men in that time, Claire was always an appendage to Frank whereas with Jamie she was his heart. The way Brianna lashes out at her mother also establishes how like her father she is. Jamie says dreadful things when he is angry and hurt and in later seasons we see this play out as the drama escalates. Without such "flaws" (which I prefer to understand as realistic human traits--people do act this way) we would be left with nothing but an insipid and lifeless narrative.

@@lynda.grace.14 Good point. I think I've seen a few scenes where characters behave in that "manual for life" (I'll never figure out what the heck 'woke' is supposed to mean), and at best it feels a bit too good to be true, at worst Mary-Sueish. Also, everybody being wise and patient and having great communication skills makes for very poor drama. And given that Brianne just learned that her mother apparently slept around on her husband and then returned to him so he shoulder the responsibility for her lover's child ... come on, that Brianne didn't storm in yelling and heaping insults is a point in her favor.
