The Ford Thunderbolt and Chevrolet Z-11 Impala were both purpose-built drag racers designed to dominate the Super Stock class, but they had several key differences:
Episode 16, AMERICAN MUSCLE Season 1
A Little History
Gas Ronda emerged victorious in the 1964 Super Stock drag racing competition, piloting a Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt to claim the NHRA World Championship
At the 1964 Winternationals, Ronda faced Butch Leal's Thunderbolt in the final, securing the win with an impressive pass of 11.78 seconds at 123.40 mph
Lightweight construction: Fiberglass fenders, hood, and decklid, along with aluminum bumpers, reduced weight significantly2
Powerful engine: A 427 cubic inch V8, officially rated at 425 horsepower but estimated to produce over 600 hp
Aerodynamic features: Iconic teardrop-shaped hood bulge and air intake snorkels through the high beam headlights2
Gas Ronda's Success
Ronda's achievements in 1964 included:
Winning the Winternationals Super Stock class
Capturing the NHRA national Top Stock crown
Winning Super Stock at the first Hot Rod Magazine Championship Drag
Races
These victories solidified Ronda's position as one of the top Ford drivers in Super Stock and contributed to Ford's dominance in drag racing during the "Total Performance" era

I have the 1964 427 T-Bolt maroon color in my garage now. Its sucks though because its only a 1/16 scale Diecast model. I wish I had the real thing. Great video and a thumbs up.

Back in the 70's,two of my friends & I looked at a Burgundy T-Bolt. It had the Lincoln auto w/ column shift. He stored it in an old worn down one car garage! It was a wood garage, that looked like a hard wind would blow it down!

The TBolt had a 427 Top Oiler. It was never produced from the factory with a SOHC. 🙄
@rarecarstorys
@rarecarstorys Ай бұрын
@chuckselvage3157 While the 427 SOHC was primarily a racing engine, Ford also offered street-legal versions in production cars like the Ford Galaxie, Thunderbolt, and Shelby Cobra. These street engines were detuned compared to their racing counterparts but still delivered impressive performance. The 427's reputation for power and durability made it a favorite among muscle car enthusiasts.

@rarecarstorys You're still mixing up the SOHC(which was a single overhead cam design hence the name SOHC or cammer) with the standard 427 which was an ohv design.

Bob Ford put one in his Thunderbolt in late Sept or early Oct and ran it at Detroit Dragway beat the National Record by way over a second. It was protested and I had the job of having them open the hood to see what he was running. It was the 427 SOHC, the 1st and last time I saw one, I had to kick them out for the rest of the year.

A.I. sure pulled the wool over your eyes. No Thunderbolt had the OHC 427. And no legal,( yeah Smokey, I'm talking about you) Chevy could touch any 427 Ford, Fairlane or Galaxie, until 1967.

Just the title alone says how much this channel knows nuthing about 427s! The SOHC 427 was in 65 & 66 only! Its called the 90 day wonder so it wasnt being developed since 64. Also in 64 Mickey Thompson was creating hemi heads for the 427 out of 392 chrysler hemi heads that was a pushrod engine. He only got a handful developed before he scrapped the prodject later in 65 becouse ford was developing the SOHC 427.

@rarecarstorys That helps, but don't get your information from the Internet videos, most are hastily made with AI, and have many errors, like thinking every old car with a V8, is a Muscle Car. Your local Library (a place where books live) if you have one, that's any good, is a good source. And stay away from the big "coffee table" books. They are a a source for pictures, but the text is sparse, and riddled with inaccuracies.

Well, another click bait video but did have a little bit of history. I only saw one Thunderbolt and it was much later in the early 90s. It was kind of a barn find since it was brought to a salvage yard but was in good shape. The 427 engine was gone and replaced with a 390. Who knew these things would have been worth so much.

@rarecarstorys Hi. Let me make clear my story. The salvage yard owner knew what he had. I'm sure he ended up selling it but I had never seen or heard of a Thunderbolt and the spartan interior and no a/c pretty much ruled me out. I had kids in college and didn't have extra money to spend on it anyway. lol.
