Shot almost a full gallon off primer on a vanagon (no roof)... good advice, I was mixing and the instructor was spraying it, I just kept mixing, until 3 coats were put on... vs 2 or 2.5 quarts I did the first time.... so glad it was on heavy, last think you want is to break through to metal.... I also shoot Nason, but since it was the school, I used PPG....like you said, don't cheap out.... another guy who does this professionally said don't cheap out, it costs you more in the long run, more time, worse results.....

Actually a reference to us auto body collision repair technicians. We do have to do the full work up and we do lots of blocking and we do everything that a person does in Restoration. We do not just install parts that are already painted! In fact over the last year, I’ve not installed a single part that was already prepped or painted before I put it on the car. Not only are we highly skilled and we can do damage repair where restoration people can’t. We do everything a restoration expert does, plus some . but we do it daily not just a car a year but a car a week and sometimes a day. You used 5-7 gallons of primer on one car? Holy shit man. If that’s the case It’s obvious to me that the metal is not ready for primer. If you need 5 gallons of primer on any car, the metal work is just not done correctly and you’re trying to make it up by putting a blanket or two of primer on it. Might as well fill it with sorayable body filler!!! But That’s not needed if you have a good body man. And you are an expert at hammer and dolly as well as blocking. I myself have restored 3 cars in the last 5 years and I’ve used 5 gallons of epoxy. 4 gallons of surface primer, 3 gallons of sealer and 4 gallons of base and 6 gallons of clear. For 3 full cars inside and out. We’ve also completed 16 insurance claims in the last 90 days and these cars never used more than a gallon of primer. All together. To use as much primer as you do the body has to be off. Wavy and in no condition yet for primer! Our cars have to meet mirror finish standard and we work for individuals that expect perfection. Jesus I hope you are joking about all that primer. IF not you are doing your job all wrong. Lol try watching some other KZbinrs ;) thats why everything in your shop is gray. Ha it’s all covered in primer. Anyway so keep doing what you do. Someone has to .

It’s okay to spray past the edges of your parts in a continuous motion but it’s also a well known fact just how much material is hitting the floor. It’s best to trigger the spray gun off and on while getting to the edge. In my opinion. At least I’ve never seen any professionals leave the gun spraying while they run off the edge of a car part. But you do your way. It’s your stuff. I just hope you haven’t been telling others to do it like that. :) and I like your comments if you don’t like what I’m doing go watch another KZbin channel. The only thing is it’s the comments that caused the drama that make people interested in reading and watching your channel without it and without comments you would have no channel! You’re welcome!

Tac Rags. Also keep with the same name brand paint thru out the process. Don't use one name brand for primer and use another for paint and another for clear. It's like a house, you have to have a good foundation. Something you might want to tell them and the size of nozzle for what paint. I seen a video the other day that they make a mud that can be sprayed like primer. They used the old style gun to spray it. I thought that was cool. Ronnie.

As a professional body man in my opinion if you’re using 80 grit on a long file to sand down surface primer you were not ready for surface primer in the first place! meaning you should be doing a guide coat on top of your body filler and using 180 grit before ever putting down surface primer. and using 180 grit only once primed with primer not 80 grit sandpaper because you will leave deep scratches you cannot get out. You sound down surface primer with 180 and use a guide code to block that out. Before you know it and when you switch to 180 or 120 you are already too low and have no material left. Can’t get the 80 scratches out. Never sand surface primer with 80 grit sand paper. You should be smooth and even already before shooting it with primer and and then using a finer grit to block out surface primers. Oh my.

Also I've seen a lot of guys clean the panel like you do and it seems to not matter too much and they painted it looks nice and customers happy but I like to think of long-term down the road between your paint job lasting 10 years or 30 years think about it like if you wipe your butt do you go in one direction or do you smear it all around like you wipe that panel. The wax and grease remover liquify the dust and makes a slurry that stays on the panel if you don't wipe in One Direction and then wipe behind it with a clean dry cloth. I'm not saying this to annoy you or tell you what to do you can obviously do what you want. Just putting my two cents out there. Paint will stick to the dried residue on your panel, rather than the primer.

Agreed. No disrespect to his really nice work, but the instructions on the cleaning chemicals are specific. Spray on, wipe off. If you don't wipe off, and do so in one direction, you're just pushing the dirt around. Again, the channel and video is great.

Lots of good instruction. But. Just curious why you are sanding primer with 80 grit? As a professional body man in my opinion if you’re using 80 grit on a long file to sand down surface primer you were not ready for surface primer in the first place! Surface primer is not a body filler. I mean I know it is used to build the service. But before you shoot service primer your body work should be almost flawless. meaning you should be doing a guide coat on top of your body filler and already using 180 grit before ever putting down surface primer. and using 180 grit only once primed with primer- not 80 grit sandpaper because you will leave deep scratches you cannot get out. You sand down surface primer with 180 and use a guide coat and block that out. Because Before you know it and when you switch to 180 or 120 you are already too low and have no material left. Can’t get the 80 scratches out. Never sand surface primer with 80 grit sand paper. You should be smooth and even already before shooting it with surface primer and and then using a finer grit to block out surface primers. Not 80 grit. Oh my. Because that tells me you’re using a surface primer as a liquid filler and you’re still doing bodywork at that point. Which is incorrect. Surface primer is a builder but it’s not used as a filler. If using surface primer as a filler then you didn’t do the job you needed to do before using a primer for surface. Also you never need to use wax and grease remover again and again. Use it only before applying your base coat. You don’t need it at all just to add more primer. Just blow off the dust before adding more primers. And keep your hands off the worked surfaces. Unless wearing gloves. Over all good info so keep it coming.

I know nobody is going to care. But I'm going to throw my two cents in there. I never learned the importance of wearing a full-face masks working in paint and body shops and in school. I learned it when I started painting airplanes. It's very important to wear a full face mask when you're doing any painting or priming or even sanding. Later on in life your eyes will thank you. These chemicals are very bad for your eyes and get absorbed through your eyes too. Also the dust is not good for your eyes either and ends up getting absorbed through your eyes. There is a fog Shield inside the mass so it doesn't fog up and there are liners you put on the outside so when overspray gets built up you just pull it off and put on new liner and you can see clearly again.
