Yup...sure enough! I touched on this is one of my newer videos and why I don't use it in often in the videos. I have found people skip around/don't watch the whole video so if they don't see me set up the layer, they get confused and then ask questions on how I was able to do that. I would love if everyone watched from start to finish but it doesn't happen, lol!

Another way you can make a border outline for any of your drawings is by duplicating the later that has the shape you want to outline, fill it until it’s one solid white (or whatever outline color you want) silhouette, applying a small amount of Gaussian blur on it, duplicate and merge the layers until it starts to thicken up, using the auto selection tool and drag up the tolerance so it gets rid of all the fuzzy edges, and voila! Your new outline! I discovered this a while back and it always surprises me when I hear others who don’t know this technique XD. I also made a video on it on my channel.
@BeeJayDeL
@BeeJayDeL 5 жыл бұрын
It’s not so much “not knowing” that technique- it’s the fact that Procreate’s selection tool is pretty piss poor and doing this results in a line that’s not super smooth (and doesn’t look good if you are planning on printing.)

The way I make the outlines while staying in Procreate, is by using a very small amount of Gaussian blur on the layer with the white filled image. Duplicate that layer a couple of times, merge them down (they become thicker and more pronounced) and repeat that a couple of times. The smaller the Gaussian blur the crisper the result, but you have to make more duplicates.
@BeeJayDeL

I know a lot of people that do this but it just doesn’t give that crisp line work that I am used to.

Just found this tutorial! Amazing - under 15 minutes you saved me days if not weeks of work. I installed procreate few weeks ago to create complex illustrations for my book and now learning it at the pace of 1-2 hours a day after work. The reference layer you mentioned and your method of creating shadows using black layer is a treasure! I will now go browse all your other tutorials to see what other hidden treasure are there :) The ones I am looking for in particular are: 1. Layer modes: multiply, difference, burn etc. So far tutorials from other people confused me even more! 2. Layer grouping but without merging 3. Perspective tool to create scenes and larger characters, e.g. to plan location/size of eyes, paws, etc. Thank you again for an amazing tutorial!!!!

For the stroke issue, you can always copy the entire illustration into a new layer, resize it a bit bigger putting the layer underneath and then going to adjustments: hue, colour, saturation and changing the entire image to whatever colour you want the stroke to be, or just alpha locking the layer and painting the it in

Just a tip Bro, regarding the Eraser Streamline comment you had made. I too hate it when small things like that are affected. So, I make a few Duplicates of Brushes I prefer to Erase with, I put them in a category of their own (Marked “ERASER BRUSHES”). I then adjust each brush to how I want it to perform. So when they’re Duplicated, the “Streamline” option will no longer be invoked when the same brushes are tweaked. Your eraser brushes are essentially left alone. Hope this helps

There is an app called SketchClub. If you save your main graphic in Procreate as a PNG, you can then import it into SketchClub. This app has a “selection tool” that you can select the graphic with. If you do the “duplicate” trick you used here you can select that layer and then expand the selection to make a border area. I throw a light blur on the outline layer to soften the edges a bit as the “selection tool” is pixel perfect and too sharp. Great video and your art is Damn! man! Good stuff

Very useful video! One question: On the layer where you create the white outline and warp it outside of the top layer - why not use a uniform transform of the white layer and just increase the size, allowing you to keep the outline clean and width consistent?

Have had a lot of people leave this same comment...on a design with a bunch of curves , this doesn't work- does not give a uniform spacing/stroke. Try it and see what I am talking about!

Thanks for the great tutorial vid. I learned a lot. My favorite part was making the line art layer the reference layer. It made coloring easier. I just noticed in the last technique where you let the background do the lining, we lost the white highlights. But overall, i love this tutorial vid. 😊

Hey BeeJay, I really enjoyed the tutorial...I'm really new to drawing with the iPad, but, I'm looking forward to learning. I noticed that you didn't have a screen cover on your iPad, or maybe I couldn't see it? If not, doesn't really slide a lot? I'm thinking about getting a screen protector but I was wondering if you would suggest some that would be good? Great tutorial tho...learned a lot, in short time, thanks!

To get that outline easily I duplicate and select the bottom as well then feather it out how ever thick I want that outer gel and just fill it in with the white or what ever color I choose works great

@@BeeJayDeL I think it does as a matter of fact. Maybe it worked for me on one of my pieces because I adjusted the image to be in black and grey then used the glow pen because it didn't work so well in color

@@justinaguilar8343 Gotcha. A lot of what I go over is in regards to print on demand platforms-can't have any opacity like that in the outer lines using direct-to-garment printing.

What if we wanted to get the black outlines back on the drawing would we have had to save the image first before clearing it in the other layers or is there someway to add back after messing around with the colors like you were?
