I have the 7.3 Tremor 250 to pull a true off-road camper. It’s a hell of a paring. I travel with this rig full-time and live out of the camper. 23K miles in less than a year so far. My existing camper only weighs a touch over 4K lbs and it is insignificant behind this truck. The plan is to upgrade the camper to a unit that weighs about 7K at about 26 feet. Something like a Black Series HQ-19 or such. No need for the Powerstroke, but the off-road capabilities pared with a truly off-road camper is where the need for this truck sits. There are a lot of us digital nomads on the roads these days, so this configuration isn’t as niche as it seems to a traditional truck buyer.

Maybe reviews should come after living with them. The ride with the Tremor is better then stock no Tremor, tire psi can come down and add to the ride comfort with out a load. We’ve only had ours for 2 weeks and km/100L is around 17. Our 2015 F150 5L was at 13km/ 100L. The trucks not even broken in yet and we are back country 4x4 driving on snowy roads. For the size and capability. This truck will be amazing.

We had it for a week and lived with it as many, many buyers will. That's to say, daily driving (hauling air) with some towing thrown in. Yes, it is a very capable truck and it's awesome that Ford is selling one basically modified as some would through the aftermarket, but in a more cohesive package and with a warranty. If you're using it day in and day out as a truck and much of that is also in an off-road setting, it's a very good package. Tires on ours were inflated per door jamb sticker which is clearly not a Goldilocks sort of number.

Gotta say, my 2020 Tremor Lariat with the 7.3 has been unreal. We tow a 13k-14k 5th wheel depending how much gear we bring. The ride quality both loaded and unloaded is just fine for my taste. I wasn’t seeking a tremor but the payload numbers on our truck were what I was looking for. I’ve put about 7k miles on it since June. I’ve done a wide variety of driving both loaded and unloaded, mountains and flat highways. No complaints from me whatsoever. Towing we get about 10mpg and unloaded I’m about 13 city and I’ve seen as high as 17 on flat(ish) highways. For a truck this size with these capabilities out of a gasser, I’m pretty happy. I say if you like the truck, it makes you happy, rock on! Enjoy it!

Good Review. That said, I respectfully disagree with your comments on ride quality @ 12:22 ......ride quality does not suffer with the tires and suspension. The ride quality with the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 285 / 75R - 18 tires and softer Tremor Package springs is much better than a Standard Super Duty or other Class 2 and Class 3 trucks. It might be a little rougher ride than a Class 1 "grocery getter" truck.....but will do much more.

Great overall review but I respectfully disagree on the ride difference on the Tremor. I have an 2012 F250 diesel every day driver that rides decently. I've driven two new 2021 SD's with the 7.3L gas, Non-Tremors (one F250 and one F350), and they rode similar to my '12 diesel, though clearly lighter in the front, which was felt, for the better, in handling. But I also drove a barely used 2020 SD Tremor F250 with the 7.3L at the local dealer and it was the Goldilocks setup for me: Still rode like a truck (which I prefer) but was noticeably softer riding than the non-Tremor SD's I've driven, including my diesel (and far softer than our 6.2L gas SD F250 at work). And the everyday driving and acceleration with the 4:30 gears was a night and day difference vs. the non-Tremor SD's with the 3:55 or 3:73 gears. My last two SD's have been diesels and they have provided me with over 16 years of great service but after watching and reading reviews, driving the new 7.3L Tremor and evaluating the cost of the diesel upgrade for my driving needs, and it simply no longer makes sense to buy another diesel for me. These Tremors seem to be the best all around package for on and off-road capability, tolerable ride, and towing/payload capability. Was very impressed with the 10-speed tranny during my test drives. These trucks might be a jack of all trades, master of none. But I say it's the Goldilocks truck for those who need their truck to do a wide variety of tasks and need something more than a half ton...and look darn good while doing it! I think I'm sold on a 7.3L Tremor, but am holding out for one more model year - hoping some of the new F150 changes will carry into the 2023 SD's, like the on-board generator option, interior material improvements and the new dash displays. Thanks again for the thorough review. Well done overall!

I wanted a Tremor but opted for the Sport Package and then got the Carli level 3" system which added 3" springs in front. 1" taller than the Tremor and I changed my F250 2" block to a 3.25" F350 block. The system came with softer but progressive springs in front, 4 Carli shocks, sway bar and a few other things. Cost was about 2k including labor...still 2k less than the Tremor, and rides substantially better, more like a 1/2 ton. I then went with 37" tires and some different wheels which cost me about 3200.00 Truck stance looks amazing and I wish I could post a pic sitting side by side against a stock Tremor. Main thing is the ride for me and the Towing is the same. It is more leveled, looks better, rides much better than the stock tremor. 35k miles and have been pleased switching to a gas vs diesel.

The one thing I’d also point out is this is Ford’s first OHV/pushrod V8 in the F series since 1996 (the old 5.0 may have soldiered on in the Explorer for a couple more years after that, can’t remember), and it’s their first clean sheet OHV V8 in many, many decades. They went all in on OHC V8s starting in ‘91 - a move the other two of the big three didn’t make. So the announcement of this engine really took me by surprise. And that gets at really what I want to know, that no auto journalist has really done a deep dive on: WHY? Sure there’s the offhand comment about simplicity and reliability, but there’s got to be more to it than that. As you mentioned, the V10 was dead-nuts reliable, as were the 2-valve non-VVT 4.6 and 5.8 (see: million mile van), so they know how to make a low-maintenance OHC engine, and probably could’ve come up with a more powerful replacement for the V10 that derived from the modular platform. Power figures on this new engine are decent for the era, but aren’t gonna blow anybody’s skirt up. It’s a big block, so fuel economy is never gonna be great. And I can’t say I’ve seen or heard much demand for a new OHV engine, nor are people beating down dealers’ doors to get their orders in. I guess it boils down to this: coming up with a clean sheet engine design isn’t easy or cheap, to say the least, and likely even more expensive for Ford given they haven’t done any in-house OHV development in decades. I know the bean counters wouldn’t have approved it without some really good reasons, and I’m just extremely curious what those reasons are. Do they plan to develop this into a platform to replace the modular? There’s got to be some compelling logic behind it, because from where I’m standing, this whole thing really came out of left field. And that isn’t to say I’m not excited about it. Hell, it’s a new V8, and from a manufacturer that’s been recently betting big on four and six bangers boosted to the moon - they have their place, but it’s nice to see V8s aren’t completely dead, at least not yet. I just feel like we haven’t got the full story yet. Whether Ford will provide that information or not, who knows, but from articles I’ve seen, I have no idea if anyone’s actually pressed them on it.

Also, it seems like Ford has plans to phase out the 6.2L V-8 which is the base model engine in the Super Duty lineup. And BTW, if you’ve tried to find a truck with one of these engines on a dealers lot...good luck! They are selling like crazy! I’m on some Ford forums and many are trading in their 6.2’s that are 1 or 2 years old just to get this new 7.3L engine. I own a 2020 Tremor w/ the 7.3 and it is a great truck! My last Super Duty had the old 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel and this engine feels more powerful and mated to the new 10 speed transmission it drives like a dream!

The OHV V8 has a lower rpm torque band / range compared to the OHC V8. So...that'd be the reason for the building a big OHV V8 from the ground up. Ford made a good decision to build the 7.3L OHV V8 gas engine for the Super Duty trucks The 6.2L SOHC V8 (aka - 6.2L Boss engine) gets it's engine DNA from the "holy grail" of Big Block V8's....but not the big block Ford 429 Boss...instead, it is the big block Ford 427 V8 SOHC. It is the big block Ford 427 SOHC V8 (aka - Cammer) that Ford built to compete against the Chrysler 426 Hemi V8.....and was later outlawed by NASCAR cause the little Pentastar and Goodwrench boys were crying in their beer. Moreover, the big block Ford 427 SOHC V8 kicked but on big block Chevrolet V8's and big block Chrysler V8's...including the 426 Hemi at the drag strip. In addition, it is the same engine that later became internationally famous for beating Ferrari a few times in the 24 Hour of Le Mans race. The SOHC V8 and DOHC V8 engines have a higher rpm torque band / range compared to OHV V8 engines.....thus better suited for car platforms. That said, the 6.2L SOHC V8 was a good choice for the Ford F150 Raptor 4WD which with the IFS axle is designed for "high speed" off-road. The a low torque band V8 is better suited Super Duty trucks with the Solid Front Axle for towing...AND offer better articulation off-road on uneven terrain, especially in mud and snow. Ford Ford Super Duty with the Tremor Package is an excellent choice for an owner who needs a truck for towing...and wants good off-road capaility......upgrade to Carli suspension with Front Sway Bar, Deaver Rear Leaf Springs, and King Shocks for excellent off-road capability. Might sound like I am a total Ford guy.....and I am for trucks. However, on muscle cars...equal opportunity...like 'em all...but favorites are the 1969 Chevrolet COPO Camaro with big block 427 V8 and the 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500...not the 428 V8 Cobra Jet.....but the 427 SOHC V8. Modern muscle cars, I prefer the 2014 or 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with the 7.0L small block V8...awesome suspension.....and increase in HP is easily attained.

There is in fact one engine (possibly more, similar to our beloved modular family 4.6 5.4 6.8) being built based off the new 7.3 and it's going in the new '22 mustang and will be an option in the '22 f150 as well as the raptor R. It will be a 6.8L ohv all aluminum block with the 7.3 heads and 7.3 bore spacing with either a shorter stroke or smaller bores not sure which. So far the only names i can find is 6.8 windsor or baby zilla, no code names as of yet but very exciting none the less. I owned a 4.6 from new for 16 yrs and it was absolutely bullet proof. I now have a 2017 5.0 f150 and its a great mid range and top end rever but lacks low end torque for towing. I dont trust ecoboost long terme reliability and i dont need a 3/4 ton to tow a 6000lbs camper or 2 quads. A new baby zilla v8 f150 with somewhat decent fuel economy that is low end torque biased vs dohc mid top end bias would deff be on my radar !

What’s the difference between the FX4 vs Tremor? All I can really find is the limited slip front differential. Maybe I’m just missing something. Thanks!
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Drew - so first of all, FX4 is available on more Super Duties than Tremor. Tremor requires a single rear wheel configuration and only certain trim levels are eligible. Assuming single rear wheel configuration: FX4 gives you 33" all-terrain tires and a locking rear diff, skid plates for transfer case and fuel tank, "off road tuned" shocks, and Hill Descent Control. Tremor adds to FX4 by swapping the 33" all-terrains for 35" "off-road" tires and unique wheels. You get different axle gearing (4.3's on 7.3L gas, 3.55 on 6.7 diesel) which is optional otherwise but guaranteed here. Ride height is taller due to different front springs and front approach angle is better thanks to a unique front air dam. Front diff is limited slip as you mentioned. Vent tubes are added to the transfer case and axles to help with deep water crossing. And Ford gives you more software stuff with Rock Crawl and Trail Control modes.

Can you elaborate if you’re using the tow/haul mode and what differences you notice from normal drive?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, used T/H mode - biggest difference is changing the shift mapping so it delays the upshifts longer than usual to let the engine use all of its torque and power band, and auto-downshifts quickly under light braking or going down hills to help slow the rig (or maintain speed) and save the brakes.

i keep trying to spec out an F250 with the tremor package, but i cant get the paint matched bumper.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
Which trim of F-250 are you configuring? You may have to step up to certain variants of Lariat or Platinum to get the paint-matched bumper. We just built an XLT Tremor that appeared to still have the chrome front bumper on the configurator.

@@OutMotorsports yeah i looked its only available on the platnum level, eh no big deal i. i think the blackout package will do just fine on the lariat.

When are people and manufacturers gonna stop trying to turn trucks into off-road vehicles?!? They aren't and never will be Jeeps, they're built for towing/hauling. Rant complete.:)

Youve clearly never seen some of the places ive hauled my excavator into for a job. There are lots of reasons to need an off road capable truck where the end goal isn't simply to go off roading.
