Really hope to see Rivian expanding it's electric vans to Europe, here would be perfect for our small cities 🤟🤟🤩🤩

When they start selling to individuals, I'd buy one and convert it to a fully decked-out camper van. The options are endless.

I spoke with Rivian reps after Detroit the auto show. They are supposedly selling individual vans to businesses. I'd make that phone call.

If you've got the money, I think an EV/RV trailer shown in one of the other Out of Spec videos, pulled by an EV pickup truck is the better option for EV van life (albeit much more expensive).

There is a ton of those brightdrop vans suddenly running around the SF Bay Area. I see multiple every day now - it used to be seeing them one or two times a week.

Yup, I heard about Walmart using the Brightdrop Van from the Arkansas Traveler channel.

How does this compare with a gas van in terms of upfront and running costs?

I have just now started seeing Amazon EDVs (3 of them) in the overpopulated backwater town in which I live, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

When they start to have fun passenger versions.

Yes, J1772 for now. Maybe new fleet customers could order level2 NACs, but most fleet customers would be J1772 for now or would have a Universal level2 charger which can do both.
@tonydeveyra46114 күн бұрын
Problem with j1772 plug is that its fragile and breaks more easily if people drop or abuse them. I went to a costco with 8 chargepoints and every one of the j1772 plugs had the little top latch broken off. That just doesn't happen on the nacs plug. AFAIK, the tesla L2 charger is also the cheapest L2 charger out there.

This may be an Amazon question, it would be nice to get some numbers on cost of ownership. Does electric delivery saves money?
@otm6464 күн бұрын
It's a huge cost save on fuel and especially maintenance. These trucks are otherwise driving around neighborhoods at low speeds getting single digit fuel economy. It's gotta be a 30% savings per mile if not more.
@yournumberonepal4 күн бұрын
@@otm646 Probably depends partially on the cost of electricity and tire cost versus the gas and maintenance.

Rich Rebuilds… get on the Rivian Commercial Van… build out the van and make sure you have bags of candy😜

I don't think NACs will be available on this rendering of the van When the van gets an upgrade to faster charging -- NOW you are going after the small business and RV van buyers who might drive long distances This version of the Rivian van is mainly for package deliveries for FED Ex etc
@triaxe-mmb5 күн бұрын
Does a small business need a fast charging van though? In most cases when I think of a small business that uses a van, it's plumbers, electricians, carpet cleaning companies, dry cleaners, etc.. They have long duration idle times since the business hours wrap up and then the vehicle just sits - they can trickle charge. The bigger question is do they have off-street parking for their vans or not... I think optional fast charging for those who need it and lv2 or trickle charging for the rest to keep the prices lower is better. Also slower charge rates are better for the battery packs as well so they get more longevity out of the same packs...
@triaxe-mmb5 күн бұрын
RVs are a different story though - fast charging is probably important as is battery pack sizing

Fleets aren't going to switch to NACS. Maybe if it's an option for new customers they'll take it, but for an established EV fleet operator there's just no point in the added cost to switch. There's no business benefit for a bunch of vehicles that will likely never be fast charged.
@tonydeveyra46114 күн бұрын
You realize that the nacs plug delivers L2 charging too, right? The tesla L2 charger is also one of the cheapest L2 chargers you can get, with discounts for commercial customers buying them in bulk.
@orangustang72534 күн бұрын
@tonydeveyra4611 Yes, obviously. And they require extra contactors to switch between the AC and DC functions of the power pins. It's a better solution for consumers because it's a lot less bulky than CCS, but that usability difference disappears if you're only L2 charging. I seriously doubt the more complex system is cheaper to implement, but it's definitely more expensive to switch than it is is to maintain the existing system. I also don't see anyone making NACS busway EVSEs currently, which would be a dealbreaker for a lot of commercial customers.
@tonydeveyra46114 күн бұрын
@orangustang7253 if the nacs L2 charger is more complex than j1772, then why is the tesla L2 wall charger so cheap? Also, I do agree that it's expensive and not worth it to switch, but there are a lot of fleets that are just starting out, not switching. Will be better for them to just start with the right standard from the beginning, don't you think ? And nacs isn't just better than j1772 because it's less bulky, it's better because it's less vulnerable to breaking. I've been to so many j1772 chargers that are unusable because the little clicky latch on the top has broken off. Annoying design.
@orangustang72534 күн бұрын
@tonydeveyra4611 the EVSE isn't more complex, the vehicle side is. The hot pins are used for both AC going to the OBC and DC going to the battery, so the vehicle has to switch between those instead of just having dedicated lines from the pins. This requires another layer of contactors which, while fairly inexpensive, are an additional point of failure that would keep a vehicle from charging. Or at least that's how Hyundai implemented the switch for the Ioniq 5, maybe it's not necessary. I don't design these things, I just see how they're designed. Both connector types fail often with high public use rates, I'm not sure that's the selling point you think it is. Curious to see data on that though. Being able to unlatch from the connector mechanically without a key or app is also a huge benefit for fleet maintainers, as the person in charge of charging the truck may not be the one who drives it. The capacitive buttons on the Tesla home chargers that I've dealt with are a poor substitute for a fast mechanical latch. If you plug your car in once a day at home, the lag isn't a big deal. If one person is doing that 100 times a day, it becomes a problem. As for newly electrifying fleets, I addressed that already. They may choose to go to NACS if it becomes available, though some critical equipment is currently only offered with J1772 and there's not much to be gained by manufacturers offering another option to solve a non-problem. I don't see it ever happening, but my crystal ball is in the shop.
@orangustang72534 күн бұрын
@@tonydeveyra4611 also I'm not sure where you get the idea that Tesla's wall connector is inexpensive. The NACS version is $420 which is about average for a similarly powered name brand J1772 EVSE, disregarding a couple of outliers of course.

Yikes, 160mi range. I could go for an electric passenger van that has space for 12 to 15 passengers but it needs a true 250m range 10 to 80 at highway speeds and a 10-80 charge time in the 20-30 minute range. Probably need to sandwich 2 Ioniq 9 batteries under the floor of a Transit van to get that. 😂
@ab-tf5fl4 күн бұрын
It's a tradeoff. Higher enables some additional use cases, but customers who don't need the extra range won't want to pay for the extra battery capacity. Most package delivery applications involve way less than 160 miles of driving in a day.
