Quick FYI: A few times you had very little distance to the car in front. Especially at high speeds over 150, that's very quickly a licence taken away for a month. They basically never check, but it's that harsh because it's quite dangerous. Give yourself time to react if anything happens!

Es gibt einige Situationen, in denen das passiert (Vordermann bremst stark ab, Spurwechsel, ...). Solange man nicht wie ein Arsch hinten dran klebt und die zwei Dinge, die ich bereits genannt beachtet, passt alles. Also with EV sales. 7% in the US and 26% in Germany. A lot of countries in the EU have about 25% of car sales be EVs, Norway even reached 80%. In The Netherlands there are now more public EV chargers (37,000) than gas pumps (24,000) at gas stations (4,100). That’s needed because most EVs have less range than a combustion engined car. Fastned, a Dutch company, is a profitable EV charger station company along highways in five European countries now, which is a comparable company to the gas station company from Shell or Exxon, only much smaller of course.

41:20 There is no speed limit on the Autobahn unless a sign shows it. The No-Speed-Limit sign you mentioned just removes any previous active speed limits. This means if you cross an entrance on the Autobahn without any speed limits you can go as fast as you want. The only speeds you need to remember are: City: 50 km/h Outside City: 100 km/h Autobahn/Kraftfahrstraße: Unlimite
@sunday87
@sunday87 Жыл бұрын
Little known fact: there are other Autobahn like roads in Germany that also have no default speed limit, even though they are not actually Autobahn. Those are roads that are both "Kraftfahrstraße" (blue square/rectangular sign with a car icon) and also have structurally separated (i.e. with crash barriers) sides for each direction of travel. See here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftfahrstra%C3%9Fe

In fact, a totally incorrect statement. The majority of the autobahn has speed limits. The segments that dont are clearly marked by "no limits" signs. Ignorance is not bliss. They are usually found in intercity rural segments. Almost all the urban segments have limits of 120 or 130 KPH. Furthermore, Germany uses variable speed limits which are dynamically posted on lighted signs mostly for congestion.
@Wised1000
@Wised1000 Жыл бұрын
@sunday87 Another completely incorrect post. The only no limit roads are the autobahn. The sign you are referring to here simply means the road is for motor vehicles AKA, no bycicles or other vehicles allowed. Accompanying this sign, there is almost invariably a speed limit sign.the maximum speed limit outside of the autobahn is always 120kph. This comment is so wrong that I suspect its malicious.

@@Wised1000 That is incorrect. There is no general limit on any road outside of the city as long as it has either two lanes in each direction or a physical middle divider. The type of road doesn´t matter and it doesn´t even need to be a motor vehicle only road (Kraftfahrstraße). I can even give you an example: The stretch of the old B6 from Wernigerode to Goslar, that is now a part of A36 had no limit for decades before it was marked as A36 in 2019. I used to fly on it at well over 200 kph back in the days when I lived there. All yellow signs, so it was a Bundesstrße, but it had no speed limit. Other examples that I found online, but never traveled on are: B3 Gießen - Marburg; B17 Augsburg - Landsberg am Lech; B243 Osterode am Harz - Herzberg am Harz

Just to manage expectations, charging points with connected Restaurants/Imbiss are not common. They are however put up more and more. Especially gas stations put up chargers like Shell and Aral, where you then use their stores, but have to deal with the fumes from the gasoline and diesel.

@Vardraq
@Vardraq 11 ай бұрын
@@SpiDey1500 oh it happens - mostly in locations outside of cities. But while there are lots of EV haters, ICEing is luckily not very popular; which is also because it is enforced by the “Ordnungsamt” as EV infrastructure is anchored in the StVO (Straßenverkehrsordnung; traffic code) with officially regulated "Zusatzzeichen" and the relevant infrastructure guidelines. Violating the traffic code then obviously comes with relevant penalties via the “Bußgeldkatalog" (I believe that translates to "catalogue of fines"); in this case - I believe - it would be a 55€ parking violation fine, which can also be higher, if the improper parked car is obstructing others, and even higher if it endangers (though that is hardly possible by just blocking a charging station). Incorrect parking with obstruction usually also means towing, which would likely add 200-300€ on top of the "Knöllchen“ (As traffic violation fine is called in the vernacular). Charging points could also are situated on private parking lots, which can enforce their own fines, which often are higher, and if you don't pay them right away, will rise enormously, as they will involve lawyers to get the owner's information, if the due sun is not paid in a few days time.

Nice trip report, thank you! As a German I have to attest you that you are the first American I see driving in Germany why really gets the way an Autobahn is driven. BTW: You do not have to wait for a "no speed limit" sign. If you see no limit, there is none. When it comes to the 130km/h on the Autobahn: This is the advised speed and is always valid, even where there are no speed limits. If you are involved in an accident driving faster than 130km/h you will receive part of the fault unless you can prove that driving faster did not contribute to the accident.

_"BTW: You do not have to wait for a "no speed limit" sign. If you see no limit, there is none."_ Nee... that's bad advice. You DO need to look out for the signs that indicate that a speed restriction has been lifted (Sign 278). It's easy to miss a speed sign if you haven't been watching out for them or indeed missed a sign due to overtaking a, or several, long trucks that can momentarily obstruct such a sign. It is a good idea to use a sat nav that has reasonable speed indicator symbols and ensure you see the "derestricted" sections you're on. You're much better advised to not assume that because you can't see a speed restriction... that there isn't one! "Eine Geschwindigkeitsbeschränkung endet also grundsätzlich erst mit dem Aufhebungszeichen (Zeichen 278)" - Source: ADAC.

Oh and thanks for not making the obvious Ausfahrt joke. 👍 For some historical background, Wiesloch is the town with the first fuel station in the world. As someone who lived in Germany for years and have visited quite often since then. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security because the autobahn has no speed limits. Though in general, the autobahn has fewer accidents than our interstates, the accidents have a high percentage of fatalities for obvious reasons. There is a reason why getting a license in Germany is a long, complicated process. In fact, the opportunities to "rip" a vehicle in the autobahn are ever more limited due to evermore speed limited areas, decaying infrastructure, traffic and Germany's notoriously bad weather, wet or foggy Be careful.... driving at over 120 KPH on wet pavement is DUMB, regardless of the car, tires, or technology. To further complicate the issue since the EU was established, the population of drivers on the road in Germany includes a lot of other country drivers, which or may not be up to snuff. Again, drive with caution.

It is normal in Germany to have the traditional gas pump start even before you have done payment. In America you need to pre-pay before the pump activates, in Germany you pump, then maybe get a coffee, and then pay your total fee after you are done with your visit. Nobody will suspect you to not foot the bill. (Especially since most stations will automatically register your licence plate number and delete the data when you pay). Since Germany has a mandatory car and place-of-living registration, the government can in theory always come and collect your debt if you were to not pay (but Germans would never not pay, if at all they might find out they forgot their wallet, or their card does not work, but then you are simply sent an invoice with a small service charge. It is rare, but it happens every now and then. Same thing when you can't pay your Taxi or need to buy a train ticket without money at hand)

Kyle, how did Germany get so far ahead of US? Massive charging station privately developed or government?

The government pushed for the adoption of EVs way earlier than the U.S. Then you have a similar automaker collaboration for charging that started sooner in Europe.

@@lewiscross7603I know of one EV charger station company, Fastned, which is a regular profitable commercial company in seven European countries. It got €4.1 million subsidy in 2015 from the EU for 94 EV charger stations in The Netherlands and Germany. Before that it got €1.4 million subsidy in 2018 from the Dutch government for 40 EV charger stations in The Netherlands. No subsidies anymore, EV charger stations are a regular commercial activity these days. They have to win tenders for new concessions. Fastned won one tender in Denmark for three new EV charger stations to be opened in 2024.

The facilities are super cool and high tech. One of the biggest in the world, yet, they lack roaming so you need to use for those specific chargers an extra app or a different payment process, making the Plug and Charge experience from a Taycan just misserable compared to ionity!

The Porsche range tool on the German website actually shows those 20" Turbo tires have the best efficiency (even a little bit better than the 19") - is this your experience also? Pressure is not very high though at 2.3 or 2.2 Bar indicated (33 PSI).

If you've been to the mall now that holiday shopping has started, you should watch the EV cars as they play musical chairs with others around the charging station. Then when they go into the mall after about an hour, just slightly pull back their plug, its so much fun. Maybe its a new social game!?!?! We'll callit how to easily piss off rich people and really enjoy watching them when they figure it out.

40:55 In Germany it is quite simple. General speed limits for vehicles up to a maximum total weight of 3500 kg are: - City (marked by a yellow rectangular sign with the name of the city): 50 kph - On any type of road outside of the city (one lane in each direction and no middle divider): 100 kph - On any type of road outside of the city (two or more lanes in each direction, or middle divider): no limit (130 kph recommended) All limits mentioned so far only apply to motor vehicles. A motor vehicle under German law is any vehicle that is only propelled by an engine, electric motor, or steam engine, as well as any vehicle that can reach more than 25 kph with human propulsion combined with an engine, electric motor, or steam engine. So a bicyclist can legally exceed these limits for example. Posted speed limits can limit the speed to a lower maximum on any street, but they can only allow a higher limit on roads within a city (Typically 60 or 70 kph). Posted speed limits in cities apply to all vehicles regardless of the type of propulsion and weight. Posted speed limits outside of cities apply to all vehicles as long as they are up to the maximum of the specific vehicle class speed limit (3500 kg = 100 kph; trucks 3501 - 7500 kg = 80 kph; bus and vehicles with trailer = 80 kph; trucks over 7500 kg = 60 kph). One strange thing is that a 40000 kg truck can go at 70 kph in a city, if a posted limit allows it, but it can only go 60 kph in a 70 zone outside of a city. In this particular case, the posted speed limit of 50 kph only makes sense as a reminder, or if they want to have the limit applied to non-motor vehicles. Sometimes they do target non-motor vehicles by putting up a 50 kph limit sign, but that is mostly the case on roads with an extreme slope where non-motor vehicles can reach speeds well over 50 kph.

Must note that as an American driver's license holder you are a very bad driver on the Autobahn and even gamble with your life because when you change lanes you have to look in the mirrors. You should even look over your left shoulder before turning on the indicator if you want to stay alive! In addition, there is a right-hand driving requirement in Europe and this means that you cannot constantly stay in the middle lane. Overtaking on the right is strictly forbidden!!! Changing lanes to the left lane must not happen spontaneously, because at a speed of 150 h/km, emergency braking is extremely long or fatal for the driver rushing up from behind, regardless of the type of vehicle! And there is no cruising on the German Autobahn because you have to be constantly attentive to what is happening behind, to the left, to the right and in front of you!!!

Welcome to Germany. 130 km/h is just a recommendation for the Autobahn. If there is no sign there is no speed limit to follow.. You do not have to wait for a no speedlimit sign. But there are a lot of signs now.
