Yeah, you have to have lived there to really enjoy and appreciate German culture and, of course, the Autobahn. I lived in Germany from 1967 to 1992. When I was there the price of gasoline was very high which factored in slower driving even on unrestricted stretches of the Autobahn.

Btw those chargers are by Alpitronic with charging speeds of up to 300kw (single DC) or in dual mode with up to 150kw each. EnBW is rolling out these 'HyperHub' charging stations at a couple of places right now. Way to go! German Federal Ministry of Transport recently rolled out an auction style scheme program to broadly build up infrastructure in Germany called 'Deutschlandnetz' with 1k charging stations mostly in rural and urban places. Change is coming faster than anticipated over here.

US is really missing out on the ID.3. Sure it is a smaller ID 4 but it actually has a fair amount of space - good leg room for the rear passengers. It is nimble, easy to park and a great deal faster than the ID.4 - especially the ones without the heavy glass roof. The LED matrix headlights are in a league of their own (leaving Tesla in the dust). My wife has the ID 3 and I drive the Model 3 LR AWD They are perfectly complementing each - ID 3 being the practical, functional well build everyday commuter - Model 3 the firm, fast and sporty long distance machine. My wife choose the ID.3 over a Model 3 SR+. I understand her fully, but would personally have taken the SR+. So yes US you are missing out - not all needs/wants a big, heavy, wobbly SUV like ID 4.

You are allowed to flash your high beam in Germany to indicate that you want to overtake the car in front. §5 Nr. 5 of the german road traffic act regulates: 'Outside of built-up areas, overtaking may be announced by short acoustic or light signals. If the high beam is flashing, oncoming traffic must not be dazzled.'

@@cartmann227 Why do you think it's wrong? I mentioned the legal source in the german 'Straßenverkehrsordnung' (StVO). As long as you don't tailgate you are allowed to briefly flash the high beam and even to honk to indicate that you want to overtake. The driver in front is obligated to drive as far right as possible to give the other driver enough space to overtake and the flashing is to indicate that you want to overtake at the next possible place. The only thing you have to care for is that you keep enough distance. Tailgating and flashing the high beam can be seen as intimidation of the other driver and that is a serious offense (§ 240 StGB).

Slightly surprised that the top speed obtained was 166km [103+mph] because when I did a quick top speed test, on a quiet M27 motorway, in my UK spec ID.3 150kW Performance Pro I zoomed upto 110mph [177+km] and the speed was still climbing, but I backed off very satisfied with it, remembering that our UK speed limit is 70mph, so I had to be quick up and down. The official top speed is 99mph. That is well surpassed, even by your test. As is the acceleration figure of 0-60mph or 100kmh. I would say it's half a second quicker in Sport mode, maybe even a little more. Maybe I've just got a quick one, though I doubt that very much. It's just a conservatively rated car by VW. Oh, and I tested the speedometer over a range with Google Maps. It's within 1 mph. And yes I checked the wind direction and speed in my area. It was negligible. My test was around July 2021. Summer?

I think we could do Autobahn rules in the USA. Some people may die. But that is a sacrifice I am willing to make. That *might* be a Shrek quote.

I don't have the statistics at hand but I can imagine that there are less deadly accidents (per vehicle kilometer/mile) on German autobahns than on US highways/freeways.
@krane15

Just so you know, automobile accident is already the most likely way to get killed or inured for the average American, and the majority of accidents occur at low speeds. But despite the facts, the old fogies legislators would never go for it.

@@krane15 I think we (Americans) would need to first get really strict on lane discipline if we're gonna do autobahn rules. Anyway, I know Montana got bullied by the feds to add a speed limit a while back, but a state should push back on that like states are doing with pot, even though that's still federally illegal. If you saw a news headline that said Wyoming removes speed limits, I don't think anyone would freak out about that too much.

The Autobahn is cool but...I used to drive from Frankfurt to Bern and "floored it" routinely, but on one occasion passed by the worst accident I've ever seen in the opposite lane. Lots of car parts spread over a 50 m area. I'm sure there must have been body parts too.
