Here's a great jig that turns your circular saw into a do-almost-everything tool and there's a free plan available: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2Tdg31unpt6e6M

Hey mate, when you're making something with all kinds of cuts in it what I do is make the piece out of cardboard then after it fits I just trace it on wood and cut it out. Way easier to cut and shape cardboard. Try it.

Been researching improved dust collection for miter saws. Your video was helpful. Thank you. This was the second of yours I've seen. I subscribed and hope you find doing these videos is worthwhile.

Great video! I have the exact saw and have found that if you just remove the dust collection bag, a large shop vac hose fits in the port. The shop vac alone picks up 80% - 90% of the saw dust. I bet with your box it would be pretty close to dust free.
@kennethrankin9480
@kennethrankin9480 3 жыл бұрын
I did something similar on my dewalt. If you also connect a vacuum to the original dust collection on the device it eliminated most of the remainder for me. That bag wasn't doing anything anyway, put that port to use!

Wow, a no nonsense, straight to the point video. Really liked it. Also thank you for not putting out obnoxious music in the background. BTW, what are you doing at 3:25 mark? Not sure what the cut was for?

That was the cut I had to make in the fence...I didn't have the shot of cutting that, for some reason

I use a mitre saw but it's not a sliding type. Do u think it would be possible to fit something like this to my saw? I need something bcos the mess is bad every time I use the thing. LOL I really need to find some type of solution to stop the saw dust from getting on everything within a 4 foot radius. It's crazy how much mess/dust these saws kick off. I actually stopped using it bcos of the mess. I think I need to build a proper station for it as well though so the area where it is sat for use is enclosed against the wall which will stop a lot of dust getting down behind the saw and on the floor which means I have to move the unit it's sitting on to clean up the mess which takes a lotta doing in my small shop. I guess I need to build better storage and areas for my tools now. Great job man. It's crazy how this simple build made it work so well. I'll be in the shop later to work on this .

Thank you for this one Tommy. I have struggled with this problem too. After watching a TON of videos, searching for a good solution, I landed on yours! Since I happen to have this exact saw, I am thrilled to see your approach. You mentioned that it was a prototype. Are you now producing the product for sale? I plan to make one, but would be happy to support you. Thanks again!

Thanks for the kind words, George. I'm not going to be producing them, this was just my first attempt at a solution and I know there could be some changes to make it better!

I think your exhaust connection needs to be more tangential to generate cyclonic action instead of just straight vacuming.

Nice! What if you made the top attachable with magnets? That way you could switch out whichever top works best with an angle.
@OutoftheWoodwork
@OutoftheWoodwork 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea if you could reliably embed the magnets on the saw.

Great job. I didn't see any bottom piece on it and am wondering about the opening under the back corners that are extended beyond the saw's base plate. Does any dust fall out from there?
@OutoftheWoodwork
@OutoftheWoodwork 3 жыл бұрын
Someone else also asked about this. It's not a perfect seal partly because of just that. I don't notice any dust falling out, but it does affect the overall vacuum seal. It could use some improvements, for sure!

I have this same saw and there are still small things about the saw I feel like I don't know what they are for. For example, on the extension wings there is a short metal piece on the end that you can flip up. What is that for? On the left side of the vertical arm that support the saw (near where the bevel angle pivots), there is a short metal pin that can be pulled in and out. What is that for?! I feel like there are probably little things about this saw that might be helpful that I still don't understand. Thank you! I really enjoy your videos. They have been really helpful for me!
@OutoftheWoodwork
@OutoftheWoodwork 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad the videos are helpful! The metal piece on the extensions are "stops". If you have to make several of the same cut, get the first piece in place and then fold up that metal piece and push the extension until it is up against the piece you're cutting and lock it down. That way you make a cut and then just push the next piece up against that stop and make a cut of the same length. The other pin you mentioned is probably the one that locks the saw head. If you bring the saw all the way down and then push the pin in, it holds the saw down....you usually do that to transport the saw.
@stephaniegeddings8438
@stephaniegeddings8438 3 жыл бұрын
@@OutoftheWoodwork It's not the pin to lock the saw head. It the pin down by the bevel adjuster. It has two degrees labelled over it 45 and 33.5 maybe?
@OutoftheWoodwork
@OutoftheWoodwork 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, I had to go look. If you look right below that there are two bolts. As you tilt the saw it will hit the pin you're talking about. It has two positions (in or out) to give you a quick way to set 45 degrees and 33.5 degrees.

Nicely done 👍, but only for straight cuts on a mitre saw?! 🥸 there ought to be another way! Maybe flexible material instead of wood? Bellows, brushes, or bags? 🤓

Imagine my surprise when searching for better dust collection for my miter saw and I run across your video. Pretty sure we worked at the same company a few years back. So when you do angle cuts this piece gets removed completely? Do you have separate boxes for various angles?
@OutoftheWoodwork
@OutoftheWoodwork 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Dan! Yep, this box is for 90 degree cuts and I pull it on the rare occasion that I cut a 45 on the miter saw. It's so easy to swap that you could make one for 90 and 45.

8 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep x 3 1/2" tall. Those are the rough dimensions of the main box and then the little wing part is just custom made to slide into that spot behind the fence and attach to the main box.
