Capt. You can keep the old shells and mark them with an “X” to know they are expired. They will work for many extra years past their expiration giving you many more spares. Just make sure you have up to date ones in case the CG stops you. Also, my county’s recycling offers and will take hazardous materials like these.

Yeah i would keep them as well. If stored corectly they could work decades aftet they are expiered. The date is only for the manufacturer to be safe, so they can say it was expiered if it does not work for some reason. To have more, just in case is always a good option, because you don't know how many you would need in case of an emergency.

Nice idea to dispose of old flares. I keep them though. They will last for many many years if stored in a dry box. You just need at least 3 unexpired flares to pass inspection. If you ever need them, you’ll wish you had them all. I’ve never heard that extra expired flares on board will result in a fine as long as you have 3 unexpired , and I’ve been inspected many times.

Thanks for the tip. That worked great. I have some flares from the late 90s that were on my boat when I got it. I will try this method. They are even too old to keep as back ups. I will be surprised if they fire. Oh...and yes...I bought this boat last year and yes it had flares from the 90s..lol.

Great information my friend! I asked our marina earlier this year if they knew how to dispose of them, they said to just throw them away. I ended up giving them to the local fire department for their use in training. All worked out well in the end.

Being an amateur ammunition reloader, I was curious how these flares worked. They are very similar to shot gun shells with one major difference - there is no gunpowder. The flare is launched with the primer only, which also ignites the flare tracer. Amazingly, the entire projectile is burned away to nothing before it hits the ground.

Someone made something like that about a decade ago but I guess it never took off. Is there a regulation that requires the pyro version? I'm not a boat guy so I don't know.

they do have powder and can be re-purposed for other things.. theyre fairly easy to take apart only you pull the primer and dump the tiny tiny amount of powder that in there and push the flare out the front of the shell from the rear...re-insert primer and powder use the seal cup that pops out on top of the flare to separate shot n powder and put a shot card on top.

I also have the electronic 'flares' on the boat. I'm not sure how good they would be in a real emergency. This is the first time I've seen flares shot into a bucket. I have enough old shells to have my own 4th of July fireworks display and I always wondered how to dispose of them. I am going to try this, minus destroying a go pro! I keep a few of the most recent expired as an extra "just in case"...Plus, it looks like fun...

I live near Lake Ontario and quite often, especially at the or near the beginning of boating season, we get alot of morons who dispose of old flare shells (both gun fired and the hand held chain pulled type) by just shooting them into the air. More than once it has caused emergency responses by local emergency crews. Alot of us rigged up a "disposal" pail like you did, but there are still some idiots. I usually carry 1 expired set as a back up to my good ones. Excellent safety video.

Always keep up to date flares but you can still keep your old flares just in case if the new ones if you run out in an emergency it's better to have an old cartridge then none at all

At least yours work after they are expired. I bought a brand new set earlier this week, I don't have a boat but I wanted a flare gun. Tried to shoot it this morning and it didn't work. I'm glad I wasn't on a sinking boat using my flare gun

maybe flares absorb moisture on a boat but bullets are pretty airtight in the brass casings. I shot 303 British from WWII with no problems at all.

An easier and far less dangerous way to dispose of flares is by contacting your local authorities. Every county has a program for disposal. Often times the fire department or sheriff are the ones who take them in.

Do not keep your expired emergency flares. The Coast Guard can still cite you for having expired safety equipment. They will tell you as well as I that all you have to do is drop off your old flares at a Coast Guard auxiliary office or front gate of a Coast Guard base

Yes it is illegal because if there's a rescue involved all those fees involved in that rescue would be fine to the user of the flare. In another words it's just like prank calling 911 so yes it is illegal to do like that captain
