Output Portal Granular FX Effect Plugin Worth The Hype?!?

A video review of the granular effect plugin called "Portal" by Output. It's a multi-effect that can be used on vocals, guitars, keys, synth, or whatever you like (think Effectrix). I'm collaborating with St. James the producer in this video. We test it and see if it's CPU hungry like Output's Movement plugin! Spoiler alert: it's pretty good on the computer. I really like this one. Usually granular takes up so much cpu but this one is good on cpu. There’s some crazy effects you can get out of it. If u have something that needs sparkle or rhythm this is perfect for that

Seems like i can get the same results using abletons grain delay paired with a few other stock plugin effects. Outputs portal seems like it can be a lot faster if you dont have ableton or arent familiar with sound design/abletons stock effects.

Yeah I was going to talk about that in a another video. Grain delay is good but I feel that it's a bit too clunky and hard to understand at first.

I was wondering how it sounded with guitar. I was hoping to get this through the Native Instruments store using e-vouchers...but it's not there yet. And they didn't offer any introductory sale. Tough to get Output products on sale or discount... Question: How does it sound with other Output instruments like Analog Strings or Substance Bass?

@infoslinger I bought it on the first sale they had, which was probably two years back. I've used it quite a bit but I find that if it's not subtle or only used at the ends of a measure, it can be just too random for any tune. Other times, I'll input one of my hardware synths and then manipulate its audio with Output and bounce it to a separate track or play with the mix to see what it can do. I have Bitwig, but I haven't gone in and setup modulators to tweak various individual parameters, usually I just pick a preset and try its mix. I'd forgotten to try this. Thanks for reminding me.

Having crusher x there is principally no need for another granular effect. And crusher is both. Granular synth and effect as well. Has an update to version 8 recently and man it's really amazing what they did there add. I mean it was the most feature rich and deep granular engine of them all already before that update. You should try it, maybe review it. It's a kind of its own. Have joy and be fun.

What is everyone listening to that makes this plugin so impressive? Every review I look at, producers playback tracks/sounds that are already super dope with these basic effects being added after the fact and then hyping them up. I think people in these reviews are caught up in how good the tracks/sound before you even use this plugin. I see nothing new or different being achieved.

I mean sometimes its good to get your hands dirty instead of focusing on youtubers use of it. There's a trial version i think. The purpose of these videos isn't to get dirty or go into deep sound design, they're only meant to show it off in a mainstream manner, give you a sense of the sonic possibilities. I'd say the grit of this plugin doesn't lie in simply adding it to an existing track, although you can get fantastic effects, i'd say this one would be criminally underused if only applied that way. The point is sound design, creating original samples and bits of audio to add later to a composition or build around it, the possibilities are huge and that's what hypes a lot of people up. Depends what style of music you make also i don't know.

Output always get me interested with their adverts but every time I buy or use a trial version I’m a bit disappointed. Portal is a less powerful but prettier imitation of Trash2. I’d rather have Trash2 than all Output’s plug ins. Obscurium is a prettier version of Portal I’d pretty is what you’re after. PS; can I sell my version of Analogue Strings? It cost £135 but I use Omnisphere and Iris2 so have no need or wish to use AS.

My original comment also made me out be be an expert on Output VSTs. I’ve 9n,y used Punish, Portal and AStrings. I would have liked AStrings if I could have got it working seamlessly in Bitwig. I judged Output off my bias against them for their Kontakt only products. There are more people with far more expertise than I regarding Output stuff. It’s actually Kontakt that I have issues with. NI is too much I.T. It always gets 8n the way of music when I try to use it. Because I don’t bother with K9ntakt anymore there are loads of VSTs that I can’t use. It’s annoying at times.

I use Maschine with NKS for all my creative stuff, rarely if ever get bogged down with anything technical until i'm at the drafting, editing or release stage of the process. I'm all about simplicity cause of health issues but the workflow on Maschine with the library integration is second to none for getting ideas down fast. Even if i really like a plugin but it's not intuitive to use it usually doesn't make the cut but i think Portal definitely ticks the boxes so far from what i've seen.

Not paying for a subscription vst plugin for basically a sample library. People keep searching for the "magic plugin," guess what it doesn't exist. If you can't play an instrument, don't know music theory, or can't program a synth, samples will only get u so far and your music will never stand out.

​@@AveMcree I downloaded the "demo" :) You can get some interesting results if you take 2 max live lfo's with each one modulating a portal macro knob, and use a third lfo to modulate the rate of lfo 2. also try slowing lfo 1 and 2 lfo rates. 💯
