Zero context to the report. Making it sound like a jolly doesn't do the report any favours. Just biassed reporting at it's best. Just because someone comes from a nice location and returns for personal reasons is not a reason to slam the practice of letting staff work from abroad...it's jelousy.

@@MindandMindResearchestheAuthorI know where I work, in the public sector we are not allowed to work from home abroad. But, like many Private sector jobs, the job can be done remotely. No different to the Private Sector. This makes it makes it sound like people are given extra to work abroad I highly doubt they are paid more than they would if working at home in the UK. Also until recently, public sector rises have been almost none. Do we want a race to the bottom? Or, improvements for everyone as a worker, Public ,or, Private Sector.

My friend works for my local council in accounts, and he said a bunch of foreign people went back home, and lots seemed to emigrate while COVID was kicking off, and were able to distance work.. My friend also tried going to Brazil for 6 months last year, which they reluctantly allowed, but then changed the rules to say you must at least be in the EU if you're going to work abroad. In theory, people like my friend who are experiencing different cultures, travelling, while carrying on their normal workload is okay imo. I don't feel comfortable for people to be living abroad while working for my counci, though. They should get a job in their own country.

And you're subject to UK taxes on income, and these people are actually contractors working for the councils but with the worst of both worlds. can be let go at the drop of a hat, no holiday or sick pay, and taxed like PAYE. i personally know people in this set-up. why live in the cities with the "free Palestine" lot when you can go abroad and not have to deal with them like you would in English cities

@@thebaldconvict When people take leave, in a government department dealing with thousands of peoples lives, the organisation they serve should need to organise cover, replacements, secretarial. This is not a part-time hobby business, this is national governance. For the next twenty days, nobody in this council district who has any particular department business with the authorities, can do so. The position in question covers a district of some two thousand homes and families.

It's really much more simple though isn't it.... You get given an expectation of what work to complete that week. If it is completed then what is the problem? If you wanted them to do more then they should have been given more. No need for clocking, no need for micromanagement just really simple "Why didn't you finish XX last week?"

The public sector contracts out work to overseas companies to the tune of billions! How is this different? In 2020 we spent £18bn with overseas suppliers fulfilling needs in the public sector, from IT product and services to construction and the rather vague sector of 'Consultancy'. You could pay a council IT helpdesk worker to help you online from Jamaica, or you can pay a multinational consultancy company to subcontract the IT function to a helpdesk worker in Bombay. Neither are in the local office.

i say let them do so... but with conditions - assuming full legal responsibility for any breach of GDPR by the remote worker. - pay will be reduced to that of the local rate that you are working from. - no compensation or benefits( accrued etc) whilst out of the country( that also means no NI- so no entitlement to health care- you will have a qualifying period- say about 1 year minimum should you choose to return), no pension contribution etc. - all govt agencies which you claim benefits from , for ANY reason will be informed( so they will stop or better still be cancelled and you have to reapply)

This really is a non issue if you look at the breakdown of figures. 2000 staff over 4 years is 500 per year. There's 317 councils in the UK so that's less than 1.5 members of staff per authority. For further context there's 1.18 million employees so when you divide that by the 500 per year this only affects 0.042 of the workforce.

They could be there to see a dying relative and rather than nothing be done and projects halt whilst they are away they choose to work, not for their own benefit but for the public. Does the PM stop all work because he's abroad? Do people in the private sector not work from different countries?
