The public sector contracts out work to overseas companies to the tune of billions! How is this different? In 2020 we spent £18bn with overseas suppliers fulfilling needs in the public sector, from IT product and services to construction and the rather vague sector of 'Consultancy'. You could pay a council IT helpdesk worker to help you online from Jamaica, or you can pay a multinational consultancy company to subcontract the IT function to a helpdesk worker in Bombay. Neither are in the local office.

i say let them do so... but with conditions - assuming full legal responsibility for any breach of GDPR by the remote worker. - pay will be reduced to that of the local rate that you are working from. - no compensation or benefits( accrued etc) whilst out of the country( that also means no NI- so no entitlement to health care- you will have a qualifying period- say about 1 year minimum should you choose to return), no pension contribution etc. - all govt agencies which you claim benefits from , for ANY reason will be informed( so they will stop or better still be cancelled and you have to reapply)

My only cause for concern would be if they're not doing their job properly and delivering the service to the required standard. I couldn't care less if they're working on a beach or from home

This really is a non issue if you look at the breakdown of figures. 2000 staff over 4 years is 500 per year. There's 317 councils in the UK so that's less than 1.5 members of staff per authority. For further context there's 1.18 million employees so when you divide that by the 500 per year this only affects 0.042 of the workforce.

Irrelevant I'm afraid. A public servant should be there to serve the Public, not overseas on holiday.
@RuntherderКүн бұрын
@thailandsnippets901 how do you know they are on a holiday? They could be there to see a dying relative and rather than nothing be done and projects halt whilst they are away they choose to work, not for their own benefit but for the public. Does the PM stop all work because he's abroad? Do people in the private sector not work from different countries?

I have an explicit work from home contract. The issue is how can you go on holiday abroad and work, your either going to spoil your holiday or not work!

Wrong, it's perfectly legal as long as you return back every 90 days for a period of 90 days
