No and neither does Matthew, the Bush/Cheney neocon strategist. Vivek is not anti-immigrant. If a single father of two children decides to become a burglar, is caught, and is sentenced to several years of jail time, are the police or judge to be blamed for the children's foster care fate? Similarly, if a couple enters the US illegally, have children, are caught and deported, it is not the justice system's fault both the adults and the children must return to their family's country of origin. The children are sort of being used as hostages: "you can't deport me because of the children." That would be like the burglar saying you can't jail me because the children will be negatively impacted. To both the answer is: "you should have thought about that before you broke the law." Every country has some form of merit-based immigration except the US. For example, Mexico uses a point system based on education level, work experience, investments in Mexico, skills in science and technology, international awards, proficiency in Spanish, understanding of Mexican culture: According to Matthew's logic, Mexico doesn't want any immigrants they don't deem worthy. Imagine that!

One of the reason he is saying this so people at the boarder who wants to come here illegally will get a message that "OK, if US is not granting our kids citizenship then we may not be able to stay there longer illegally". IF Vivek becomes president, my hunch is that he is going to use this a negotiation tactics with democrats on granting citizenship to illegal who are already here vs who are coming "going forward". I am from south asia and personally know people who come here on tourist visa (6 months) when they are pregnant, then stay here until the baby is born and then go back to their country. This allows kid to choose US citizenship when they turn 18. If you ask me, pretty good way to cheat the system. You will never see MSNBC doing report of these cases. My guess is that Vivek having south Asian background, he knows these people growing up and now he fills he need to correct the system of ILLEGAL immigration. What's wrong with that?

No. His parents were legal immigrants. India’s constitution does not allow for dual citizenship so his mother chose to obtain US citizenship. His father chose not to but remains in the country legally. His parents are not illegal aliens, that of which he explicitly states that his policy would apply. For example birthright citizenship is excluded for foreign diplomats in the US that happen to give birth in the US. Also other situations where a Canadian may need to cross the border for an emergency medical procedure for pregnant mother. So to prevent birthright tourism or citizenship to illegal immigrants there is a strong case to amend it and good chance the Supreme court will favor amending the 14th amendment.

Can't they apply in their own country? This way no need to take a long trip through all those States. No train, no buses, no walking miles. The local embassy says yes and they can take a plain (with a free ticket). If it's no you know that you don't have to leave because they will never let you in or regulise your papers.
