This week has thrown up another challenge
The other end of the cables I installed in a recent video.
The first set were inside and although they were very tough, they were in the dry. This week I've had to cope with the weather, the dark and the bloody awkward cables. Managed it though.
I got the full set done, 28 in total, but i didnt video all of it as it was just the same process over and over again.

Im curious, do electrical contractors in the UK ever have their own in house cable jointers, or do they tend to sub that out? I do large commercial and industrial electrical work in the US. Here electricians pull the cable and terminate switchgear, transformers, distribution panels etc. Ie, there isnt really a distinction between cable joining and other electrical work. I do have to admit it makes sense that what Tony does would require separate licensing and certification. Ive met many electricians who rarely put their hands on anything bigger than installing lights, switches and receptacles.
@jointechcabling9103
@jointechcabling9103 2 ай бұрын
Some companies do have jointers that work direct for them but most subcontract it out to people like me. I think it makes sense because you become specialised in your particular field and make a better job of it. Plus the tools are incredibly expensive.

Hello, have you ever talked specifically about Al? Most electricians will only see Cu core, Steel Wire Armour but I know a lot of the bigger cable is Al cores and / or Al armour. How do you go about jointing that stuff?
@jointechcabling9103
@jointechcabling9103 2 ай бұрын
Ive only ever done 5-6 aluminium core cables. Its pretty much the same proceedure as copper as i remember. The higher voltage stuff tends to be aluminium but im not qualified to deal with those voltages yet.
@TronicUK
@TronicUK 2 ай бұрын
The single core cables have aluminium armour to prevent currents circulating through the armouring if steel . The gland plate will also be aluminium.
@richardlumley2581

Hard to get a scale, whats the diameter of each of those singles? Looks about 60mm? Is that aluminum armored insted of steel?
@jointechcabling9103
@jointechcabling9103 2 ай бұрын
About 50mm. Its an aluminium armour instead of steel. They are about the size of a 4cx95 or a 4cx120 depending on manufacture. Also they dont like to be bent🤣🤣
@richardlumley2581
@richardlumley2581 2 ай бұрын
@jointechcabling9103 thanks, 50mm around is a big old cable! I'm not a spark so don't get the scale from the other sizes! Looks like mega hard graft though, top work!
@TronicUK
@TronicUK 2 ай бұрын
@@richardlumley2581 the armouring has to be aluminium in a single core cable . Current would be induced into the armouring if it were steel and cause excess heat and losses into the earthing system . This is not a problem on multi core cables as the opposing magnet fields cancel . The gland plate is also aluminium.
