A fun subversion of this is the mini mushroom in some of the super mario bros games. While you can only take one hit before dying and are only able to damage enemies by ground pounding, it does allow you to run up walls, bounce on enemies other than giant dry boneses, make you jump higher, allow you to access small pipes and pathways and therefore find secrets, and lets you run on water and sand. In Super Mario Bros DS it is actually required in order to reach some of the star coins.

Another invisibility powerup that is usually a detriment is the partial invisibility powerup in the original Doom/Doom II. It makes enemies aim randomly around you instead of directly at you. Sounds good in theory, but for any enemies with projectile based attacks it makes their attack patterns far less predictable and harder to dodge. A bunch of hell knights will normally all target directly at you, allowing you to easily strafe around the incoming fire. If you're invisible, it's a wall of projectiles that are just going to hit you.

The cloaking device in Super Smash Bros Melee rendered your character mostly invisible, it wasn't the worst but certainly not very easy to recover when you're trying to jump back on to the stage. And yet, if you have a name on to record your stats, you'd see the arrow and your name above your character even with cloak. The item was either some sort of aural meta-bluff item or practically useless.

I thought the armor was fine as is. Honestly, by the time you get it, you shouldn't need rupees for anything else so you can just use them for health. It's a nice balance to the rampant "inflation" that occurs in late game video games. It's also low-key almost necessary to finish the endless dungeon thing. The magic armor in Zelda: Twilight Princess is awesome. The side quest to buy it takes so long that by the time you get it, you'll have bought everything else in the game. You won't actually need rupees anymore, and yet Twilight Princess hoses you down with them right up to the end. So you might as well use them for defense. And when/if you actually run out of money, just change back to the green tunic.

Hilariously, there was actually one good use for Gen 1 Focus Energy: - Crits would negate all stat changes for the attack, including your attack buffs, making it weaker if you'd used something like two Swords Dances - Crits were based on your speed stat, so faster Pokemon were more likely to crit Basically, Focus Energy could save Crits from screwing you over in a longer fight if you had time to set up.

I was about to mention this, but in practice, it never really makes sense to make the effort to use Focus Energy for that purpose because it takes up a move slot and an extra turn to pull off, which, even though gen 1 is a bit bulkier than later gens, you usually aren't afforded.

Also, the in-game glitch of buffing/debuffing yourself to give you more Badge Boosts. This is fantastic, really, so take Amnesia, for example. In contrast to the Cloak of Darkness, the Boots of Force are actually really useful since it lets you kick open chests you don't have the key for yet. It also has the highest damage output. I remember first getting the magic armor, and then realizing all of that about it. Thing is, by the time you’ve grinded enough rupees to get it, you’re basically good enough at the game to not need it. And I realized that pretty quickly too, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. Twilight Princess's magic armor drains rupees, yes, but the game gives you WAY too many rupees, so it really doesn't feel wasteful to wear it into combats. I usually find Link putting the rupees back into the chest because his pockets are full more often than he winds up keeping what's in a chest I have him open. The armor is especially helpful in the pit of trials or whatever they chose to call it later on. I'd say it still counts as more of a power up than a power down.

There is one practical use for the magic armor. In the cave of ordeals, there's an enemy called a gibdo. It's similar to a redead - creepy zombie thing that moves really slow and freezes you in place by screaming. Unlike the redead, though, the gibdo attacks you with an enormous sword instead of its own body, and every hit deals massive damage. If you're frozen and one of the gibdos is about to hit you, you can switch to the magic armor really quick, take the hit, and then immediately switch back and whack the gibdo until it screams again. Rinse and repeat. You still need a good amount of rupees, but it's not nearly as much of a financial drain as using it literally any other way would be.

As stated by others, the armor in TP is not meant to worn all the time. It's a late game item that's only meant for emergencies or difficult situations. It draining rupees actually helps since by the time you reach the late game, you run out of things to spend money on and yet the game keeps giving you endless rupees. Given that most of TP fights are insanely easy anyway and the armor looks really cool, there's no way I'd say it "screwed you over."

TBH the twilight princess magic armor takes the Zant fight from intensely frustrating to a complete pushover. Didn't use it for any other fights. Except maybe once or twice in the Trial Pit. And rupees aren't a problem in this game especially if you do the Poe side quest where the final reward I think is every single time you visit the guy you get 100 rupees(Silver). Alongside a frickton working your way to that reward.

Then there's something like undermine, with a whole bunch of great powerups that you can find throughout the game in the form of relics, blessings and potions. Most of them are great, like giving you immunity to spikes, make you spit out fireballs, or give you health, etc, but some of them, you are better of not picking up. The karmic scale turns all incoming damage into 1. In return, the player's health bar (which is usually 100+), is set to 5. While this means that you can tank 5 of even the most powerful hits, it also makes you die instantly if you misjudge a jump and accidentally leap into a torch. And god help you if you encounter a cluster of poisonous spiders.

While I agree that the Magic Armor is pretty much garbage, I did find one use for it. There is a spot near the very bottom of the well in the Gerudo Desert where the Great Fairy resides where you have to face 5 Darknuts at once in a small space. Since the armor not only negates damage, but also knockback, it came in real handy during that fight. and only that fight.

I get what they were going for with the Magic Armor (Rupees are useless when you run out of things to buy), so giving them a practical use to power your armor was a novel idea, the execution was just poor. The constant drain was unnecessary, and they could've made the impact to your wallet relative to the strength of the hit it absorbed. An attack that dealt little damage would drain few Rupees and a major hit would be a hefty cost (to prevent making bosses too trivial). The extra weight could've just been scrapped all together, it doesn't really make sense from a gameplay/lore perspective. If they wanted to keep the weight from the unpowered armor, they could make it so the armor still offered a damage reduction (Link isn't used to wearing heavy armor, but heavy armor will still protect you better than a tunic will).
@JosephLobato475576229

I'm in agreement here. I honestly wish that they had left the weight increase out as a compromise if they decided to keep the constant rupee drain in so I could wear the armor as a cosmetic even with no rupees left in my wallet. Instead they decided to leave it unchanged in the HD release for the Wii U.

Magic armor in Zelda TP actually helps if youre trying to stay full health for the "Great spin" which does help in the 50 room dungeon. I mean at the end of the game that money isnt going towards anything anyways lol, I usually just loaded, ran the dungeon to fight the 4 darknuts at the end, and then turned it off. theres not really a point in saving if youve already collected all the stuff, got the potion or watever at the end and are full on all the gear and money. so.... at that point, magic armor away if you feel like it. also... kinda looks cool, but practical wise and if youre not end game, you never need it cuz other than 1 enemy in the whole game (King Bulbo) the most damage anyone else does (ganondorf and Darknuts) only do 1 heart, which isnt alot.

At the end of the Game Boy Advanced version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you fight a boss battle against the Basilisk. The problem is, you are stripped of all of your party members AND your wand and left to use the Sword of G. Gryffindor. Cool in theory! Problem is, the sword scales with your physical stats, NOT the magical ones you've been training up all game. Your only hope of beating the Basilisk is stocking up on healing items, doing all of the side quests that get you strong items, buying cards (that will be random every time) that allow you to deal magical damage, and praying to RNGesus that the snake misses (its hit rate is decent) and that you hit (the sword's hit rate is garbage, and tends to roll 0 on damage)

The Scarseal and Soreseal talismans in Elden Ring. Radagon's variants increase your physical stats and Marika's increase your spell casting stats by +3 and +5 for Scarseal and Soreseal respectively. The problem comes in when those talismans also increase the damage you're taking by a percentage value. 10% for Scarseal, 15% for Soreseal. Later on in the game, those flat stat bonuses will be massively outweighed by the extra damage you're taking.

It's not a power up, though. It's literally hard mode. Better example might be nex mex spells - you can make cow punchers and snake oilers mages but it will also drain stats. Best character is snake oil salesman with everything but vampiric yodel and grinning skull - amp myst, attack all spell, 3 skelly allies, without losing 25 gun dmg or item and meat drops. Plus snake oiler's great consumable crafting, 3x poison, big spleen, fan the hammer, etc. Bean slinger's pretty great too, but nex mex provides a massive benefit that the already mage class doesn't really get.

I can think of a few, and they are; *_Black Blade (Tenchu Z):_* Although it serves its intended purpose (slightly reducing your detection range), it's how you hold the item that screws you over, it takes up a consumable item slot, despite *_not_* being a consumable, you need only buy it once. *_Berserk Mode (NieR: Automata):_* An ability A2 possesses in place of the self-destruct that 2B and 9S have, how it functions is a significant damage boost at the cost of *_constant_* HP loss, shutting off once you hit a threshold. *_Superbolide (Final Fantasy XIV):_* A skill unique to the Gunbreaker class that grants them 10 seconds of invincibility at the cost of reducing their HP to 1. To make it even worse, you drop to 1 HP first and then gain the invincibility the frame after, meaning you can die from using it if your timing is bad enough, and if you are fighting a group of enemies, the odds of getting hit on that one frame goes up. *_Partial Invisibility (Doom and Doom 2):_* Although this works by giving all enemy attacks a slight directional offset, this can work to your detriment, as it will make enemy attacks harder to dodge, especially if said enemy is the Mancubus, as their attacks already have a slight offset, making them even more unpredictable. *_Glass Cannon (Noita):_* A perk that can both work for and against you, it caps your health to 50 and negates health boosts in exchange for x5 damage. Sounds bad enough already, right? It gets worse, it doesn't just multiply damage by 5, it does the same to the *_radius_* of player-made explosions, meaning you need to be far more careful to not blow yourself up. Picking up a second Glass Cannon is absolute madness, as your damage and explosion radius are multiplied by 25.
