Fun fact: Syndicate got Darwin's personality DEAD WRONG. He was plagued by anxiety for his entire life and rarely stood up to defend his own work in front of scholarly gatherings because it caused him so much angst. Many of the most famous debates were carried out by his close supporters in his name to spare him the suffering. Man, what a fucking mood.

The dark brotherhood quest from Skyrim. I starts out as: “oh no, a kid ran away from an orphanage, maybe I should find him and make sure he’s okay.” And I’m pretty sure you all know the rest.

Then there's the Dark Brotherhood initiation quest from Oblivion. All I did was infiltrate Castle Bravil and mercilessly slaughter the Count's son to avenge the arson murder of the folks who raised me, and as soon as I take a nap-- BAM, I'm the newest member of a subsumed Mephala cult.

I got it on the first try just by walking off the side of the parapet figuring it was high enough up to do the trick. Boy did it ever! I was down to just a few HP and hobbled over to her shop to finish the quest. Good times.

the whole main quest from the citadel dlc in mass effect 3 lol, it all started with a nice little sushi date! ended with blasting your way through the citadel, infiltrating a casino, finding your space hamster in the garbage, and having an existential throwdown with your clone

Ohh, this is a good one. The first one that comes to mind for me was the "please repair our air-conditioning unit" given by the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout New Vegas. You "just" have to recover three pieces of equipment from three different vaults, all three involving scavengers, stealthy plant-zombies, crazy experiments, deadly traps and a lot of radioactive exposure. There is also the "Mino-Tour" quest from AC Odyssey where you pay this child to take you on a tour of the Minotaur-centered tourist attractions around Crete, only for him to lure you into a cave and try to rob you.

Skyrim 'Rise in the East' quest. Starts with a struggling businessman asking you to steal his neighbour's logbook. Ends with sailing to a pirate island to launch a full assault on their fortress and running out in a hail of cannon fire.

In Knights of the old Republic, you can get a nice history lesson on Tatooine with the sand people. Pretty cool if you like lore, but you better pay close attention, because if you say anything wrong the whole village turns hostile and you either die or turn full Anakin mode and genocide the entire tusken population in the game.

In general this is a prevalent problem in RPG's. Somehow "Bring me some Flour" means "Go into some bandit filled mines and kill 50 people till you find me 4 blood drenched sacks."

I have a quest that turned out surprisingly violent: The Outer Worlds quest "Makes Space Suits, Won't Travel". The fashion designer Celeste Jolicoeur sends you out into the galaxy to get different outfits to model for her. You can either buy or happen upon some of the sets without issue, but you will likely have to kill Marauders to take lower level gear than you have at the time so you can bring it back to Byzantium to model for her. Then she sends you off to get materials and fight enemies like Mantiqueens. She then sends you on a quest to track down a missing package and, when you return for your new outfit, the Chimaera, you find out she was killed by Corporate Troopers. Turns out the Chimaera's look wasn't legal in Byzantium and Celeste resisted arrest, so they killed her. If you want you can also accuse the Troopers of murder and attack them too. Not what anyone was expecting when they were asked to model clothes.

I remember that quest. I collected a lot of clothes so i had a bunch on my ship. I had to bring Nyoka with me for the hunting part of the mission, also felix because i like him. All in all, im glad I bought some clothes from her, along with Parvati's stuff for her date.

RoboCop: Rogue City has an early side-quest where you are asked to track down the stolen car of the Mayor's niece, and you're even pointed towards a local car shop that the thief is working at. You eventually track down the thief, who it turns out isn't all that bad, just a misguided kid who can set back on the straight and narrorw. However, he stole the car for a chop shop run by the rising street gang trying to take over Detroit and well... it's a RoboCop game, I don't think you need me to explain what happens to criminals when RoboCop gets involved

The "Recipe For Disaster" quest in Runescape starts out incredibly simply, then rapidly descends into requiring you to do about 18 other quests, get a cooking skill of 70, amongst other things and fight a level 99 boss called the Culinaromancer, having in the process killed an awful lot of random monsters and the odd cultist.

Morrowind's Tribunal expansion has the quest A Star is Born. You're hired to fill in for an actor who's gone down with something. Simple, right? Nope; about halfway through the scene, an assassin who very much wants you dead jumps on the stage. Kill him and it turns out the guy you're understudying was not ill, but in hiding from the local assassin's guild. At least the assassin drops a daedric wakizashi, one of the best swords in the game.

That Starfield one can be completely non-violent if you do the quest after joining the Crimson Fleet. There's a bunch of quests and POIs that you can walk around and explore at leisure if you're a member of the Fleet because the pirates recognize you as friendly.

You’re trying to show the Nahuali a good time and have him bond with you and the rest of the crew with non violent crimes including karaoke and art. Turns out every one of your characters plans goes wrong and it’s nothing but murder and stealing vehicles while your character groans that it’s All gone wrong today.

In Witcher 1 there is a quest where someone claims they have a monster in their basement. So you think it's a simple kill the monster job. Nope. Turns out it's a scam where they lure people into that building then rob/kill them. Yeah, they don't survive luring Geralt down there.

Hanging out with Sanguine the prince of debauchery in Skyrim goes very wrong that sees you slaughter a number of innocent animals to retrieve stuff for Ysolda that you lost and a number of other things i dont remember. I only remember Ysolda's part because the first time i did that quest i was married to her and she wasnt too happy with me for it.

"A Night to Remember". I didn't need to slaughter any innocent animals for that, but I did have to kill a giant and a hagraven to take back what I gave them (a goat and a wedding ring, respectively). This all eventually leads to slaughter regardless, though; the last leg of the quest puts a lot of angry mages between you and where Sanguine arranged to meet with you.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. There are MULTIPLE quests where you’re asked to pick mushrooms, harvest herbs, or catch insects. Surprise surprise, it’s ACTUALLY an excuse to introduce one of the really cool, really tough “Fated Four” monsters. That’s a real twist because there are other quests where that’s actually just what you do, and you think, “…they wouldn’t do it to me AGAIN, right?”

Oh, that's not unique to MHFU. Each game in the series has a mission like that, an innocuous-sounding "gather herbs/mushrooms/whatever" mission where the last item is in the same area as the flagship monster. Except the violence is usually pretty one-sided.

What about the Summoner Sidequest in Bravely Default? You're tasked with finding two missing children who end up murdering each other. It starts with the woman in charge of the weapon shop asking you to look for two young sisters, that when you find, say they're going deep into the forest to find forest fairies so they can ask the fairies to give them hairpins so they can be pretty like the older girls and women in the city. You chase them to the forest depths, where you find the Summoner Mephilia slaughtering the fairies, revealing the hairpins do indeed come from the fairies, specifically that they're made from the neurotoxin-filled wings of dead fairies. The neurotoxin ends up effecting the sisters, who turn violent and start fighting over the wings. Once you're finished fighting Mephilia, you learn that the sisters had killed each other while you were battling.

For me it’s the quest in Yakuza 4 where you end up fighting a whole bunch of people as Saejima to help a little boy find his sister. All because a greedy slimy loan shark is using you.

Fallout New Vegas has a sidequest called I forgot to remember to forget given by Craig Boone one of your companion characters. To earn this quest you have to have Boone as a companion and earn five history points with him. This includes learning about his involvement with the massacre at Bitter Springs in which women, children and the elderly of the Great Khans tribe were killed. At first Boone will refuse to go back to Bitter Springs but later change his mind. When you and him arrive and make camp for the night. The two of you get into a shootout with soldiers of Caesar's Legion.

The play only turns to a riot if you choose to make it a serious drama while doing the prerequisite quest to write it. If you make it a comedy that guard gets shut down by another playgoer for taking it too seriously. Fudging your lines just gets you an earful from the troupe leader Irina.

How about Mass Effect 2's Arrival? Sneak into a Batarian prison, rescue Dr. Kenson, sneak out. Nice and simple. Yet somehow it dramatically escalated to an entire star system being completely obliterated.

There's probably a lot of examples from Bethesda's RPGs, but in Oblivion's Mage's Guild quest "A Mage's Staff", your quest is go to a cave that leads to a remote island and get a tree branch from some mages for your first mage staff. Unfortunately for you, the two mages were murdered and in their place are six necromancers in the cave and three more on the island. These necromancers can be challenging on normal difficulty since they each will summon undead and pelt you with their maces or their spells. And all you were supposed to do here was pick up some lumber.

I feel like almost any quest in Baldur's Gate would qualify too, because at least half of them devolve into a massive fight making you realise that taking this quest was potentially a stupid idea.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous; several examples come to mind, but the biggest one is Sosiel's first companion quest, A Farewell; having just helped fight off the demonic invasion that had struck the city of Kenabres, Sosiel asks you to take a moment before your army marches to counterattack to go to the cemetery and have a nice funeral for a number of folks who were killed during the fighting. Very unfortunate how there's still cultists around and one of them interrupts the burial halfway through. By raising all the freshly-interred dead as zombies to attack the funeral-goers.

In Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed, there's a mission from your little sister asking you to go to three maid cafes around Akiba and buy a limited-time cake from each. Sounds simple, no? Well, after buying the cakes, outside each cafe you get ambushed by a maid otaku who immediately tries to mug you for the cake and if you take a single hit in the process of beating him or running away, the cake is ruined and you have to try again.

The Witcher one reminded me of the 'A Star is Born' quest from Morrowind's Tribunal expansion; Basically the director of a play will ask you to replace the lead actor who got ill, and will give you the script; And then things go fine... until you read the final line and a assassin tries to kill you, because you were actually a decoy; Turns out the lead actor was never ill, but hiding because he got a Writ of Assassination against him by a Telvanni diplomat he pissed by having a indecent tryst with the diplomat's daughter; Least the assassin's weapon is good, and the 2k gold and amulet for saying all the lines right are a nice bonus

The infamous delicate flower quest in Hollow Knight comes to mind with this sort of list. You're supposed to deliver a flower for Ze'mer to her dead lover's grave. It sounds simple, that is until Ze'mer tells you that you can't ride the stag station or get hit even once while holding the flower.

Tears of the Kingdom has two of the three news investigation sidequests that turn out to be Yiga traps. One involves questioning the validity of a psychic cucco, the other involves helping a lady rescue her friend, who's hiding from someone.

with that Starfield quest if you have joined the Crimson Raiders those pirates wont kill you, it's made a lot of missions easier when it sets those pirates up as enemies.

Video idea: Which video game universe would you choose to live in? You start off in the same situation as the player character. You do not have any skills or abilities that you don't really have. You don't learn super quickly, you don't earn XP, you don't level up. You are a normal human. Though if a setting has things that normal people can get, you can too. So cybernetics in Cyberpunk 2077 is fine, but you don't start with it. The only caveat is you can be appropriately sized to deal with the majority of npcs, or not. If you want to be a 'giant' in a game with a bunch of realistically sized sentient mice, be my guest. Or their guest. Or pest. Oh, and one last thing. You are not the main character. You don't get saves, you can't reload, unless every NPC has a respawn mechanic you don't have one either. So, which game world would you want to explore and live in?

South Park: The Fractured but Whole: Initially you're sent to the Old Folks Home in town in order to help Tweek and Token, when you get there you find out it's a community service job and you have to sing for the elderly. Long story short it then ends with you trying to get out of the building while endless waves of grandparents are trying to attack you.

I can think of a few TOTK Penn quests that fit the bill. There's spelunking in your underwear and Following the woman who leads you to the plateau only to be a Yiga ambush. Then there's going after that golden horse. If you're not careful, you're facing an ice dragon. XP Oh, for a future category, can you talk about battle interruptions? Been playing Super Mario RPG and Booster eating your enemy (the living cake) was weird.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a pretty good one. If you went and killed the maelstrom at the food processing plant mission, you get Kerry's sidequests nearer to the end of the game, and he has you go to a nightclub owned by the maelstrom to go fetch one of the bandmates who went there to interview. Normally you'd either be just fetching her or sneaking out some data she wanted to get past whoever the current boss is, but if both candidates are dead (you deliberately have to kill both), the 'third' candidate welcomes you in all casual but shortly after she takes you into a room with your (beat up) bandmate and you get ambushed by the gang and have to shoot your way out. It's an otherwise chill quest with little to no violence on your part except for that bit and you pretty much went out of your way to make it happen in the first place (though if you hate maelstrom, then I don't blame you).

Skyrim, a Daedra's Best Friend. You think you're returning a magical talking dog to their master. You wind up murdering a bunch of Vampires asking for a cure in a shrine of Clavicus Vile, killing a bunch of other people to get an axe, then being told you can keep the axe only if you murder the dog.

The questline titled "You Are Cordially Invited" from Borderlands 2. At the beginning, Tiny Tina asks you to gather the guests for a tea party. You end up killing many, many animals and people, including the guest of honor, AKA the murderer of Tina's parents.

Never forget the "Drive Thru" mission in San Andreas. The only thing CJ should've had to worry about was how to pay for Big Smoke's order, not getting shot up by a rival gang.

I gotta throw out Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 for the Commenter's Edition. In one of the cities, there's a couple of prophets who will say you are destined to meet them on the next day. Okay, sure. Very easy. After you meet them the second time, they will tell you to fetch 3 orbs around town. A little movement, but they're all easily found. Then, they go from 2 to 20 by asking you to completely exterminate Niblets, including their Last One. That means killing a grand total of 99 Niblets to satisfy them. The reason this last task is extra violent is because a Last One is literally "the last of its kind" in Lightning Returns. This is one of the few games where you can hunt monsters to extinction, and you're even rewarded for it! Although in the context of the game, this sounds less like a war crime and more like a mercy killing.
