The animal that we know as moose is called "elk" in Europe (I think its scientific name is Alces alces, which is presumably related). The animal that we call elk (or wapiti, if you're feeling feisty) is closely related to the Eurasian "red deer" -- they used to be considered the same species, although I don't think that's the case anymore
