When it comes to outsourcing, two nations reign supreme, the Philippines and India. Enjoying first-mover advantage, the Indian outsourcing industry reigned supreme for years, and remains the leader in IT services to this day. However, with stronger English skills, accent neutrality, a highly Westernized culture, lower costs and solid government support, the Philippines offers a better strategic advantage. Especially for customer-facing that require excellent communication and soft skills.

Not really? Some of us do, but personally, very little of my knowledge (both the ones I use for school and the ones I use for "business") come from Indian KZbinrs. Most of it is from Americans and Canadians, others from Brits, Dutch, Germans, Filipinos, Chinese, and Australians. And, while I mean no disrespect, I'm usually not very happy when my teachers use Indian videos to teach us subjects like Math. The accent is strong, and the quality isn't that great. Hopefully, we'll be able to teach and help each other, rather than what some people do: just being fine with the low quality of our two countries. We should really be striving to help each other progress rather than encourage each other to stay low quality.

I deal / talk with Indian people 5 days a week as a Service Desk support. The things that can be resolved in 5 minutes with native speakers or even Europeans who speak English can take 30-45 minutes with an Indian caller. That is because they have a very thick accent that I cannot even picture what they are saying, and likewise, they do not understand my neutral accent (was trained to sound close to Americans long time ago). I literally have to slow down by 50% when asking questions because most of the time, they will pretend that they get you and end up saying something unrelated to your question.

I've worked in the IT business spending time on the phone with various people from different countries. If I have to generalize a bit, which isn't exactly bad.. but India have great talents for tech knowledge, but the Philippines has better phone and conversational skills than the ones in India. I have to say, I encounter way too many rude Indians from customer service and tech support. I usually end up getting really stressed just talking to them. So yeah, I think you can train Filipinos tech-wise, that is easy! And then you can get the best from their customer service skills since their hospitality is innate with them. So choose Philippines is my answer.

This is so true. The Philippines is highly westernised. Im a Filipino who went to Malaysia for a few weeks and I missed my westernised country so much. I really appreciated my country. Also, customer service skills, the smile, pleasant personalities of people working in customer service...The Philippines excels in these based on my experience. Also, Filipinos love working in a culturally diverse environment and encountering people from other countries. Even before Spanish colonisation, we had amazing trade with China, India, Middle East and other Southeast Asian countries....so it's kind of in our blood. We just love intercultural interactions because we love to know more about the world. In other countries, sometimes the people are ethnocentric.

True! I have previously worked from a company where the workload is really high, they're really pushing their employee to their limit in a bad way, of course we can do it, but having that workload everyday drains our energy ( physically and mentally ). 6 months later, I got tired and sick and looked for another job, and now I am happy 😀

In terms of wage rate, BPO employees have higher salary rate than private domestic companies. The BPO salary is comparable with the salary of those in the government service. However BPO companies have more chances or opportunities for promotion than those in the government. - Speaking from a person who was once worked in a BPO, then in a private company and now in a govt agency.

When I was a fresh grad. I tried BPO or call center and I passed. I remembered coming to my first day of training and the the very first thing our trainer said is "You are not here to learn or improved your English, you're here cause you know English", and there I was with my initial plan to improved my English (More on speaking). I was like " Oh man! Im doomed!" Hearing everyone talking in English with American accent some with Australian accent really scared me in a good way I worked hard and at the end of the training I was able to improved my confidence in speaking in English plus I got an American accent haha. But the training just nothing when you are in the floor already. Talking and solving issues in a foreign language and doing those technical stuff at the same time is very hard! trying to listen to the customer's frustrations and creating a report about his/her issue at the same time is just ahhh! After a month I decided to quit as my heart is really not there and I don't wanna go into depression - you know there are lots of rude and cruel customers out there and I'm I guess im still naive back then that I couldn't take profanity not personal, im too sensitive. I'm now working in Dubai and had some encounters talking to a Customer Service Representative over the Phone and whenever I raised some concerns I couldn't feel any care, empathy, or eagerness from them to help you. They will just give you a "by the manual book" answer, cold, sometimes they even fight with you. Very far from the Philippines' Customer Service where the main goal is to solve the issue and satisfy your customer over the phone. I salute all my kababayans in the BPO industry. you guys are all rockstars!

I once worked as a chemist in a clothing factory mixing colors to dye a certain fabric, on the same factory, I also worked as a maintenance engineer maintaining and fixing very large machines for making thread and weaving fabric. I worked as a sales manager with people under me, a legal researcher at one time, built, troubleshoot and repaired PCs in the late 90s (now still on the side), practiced my nursing profession at some point. I guess given the challenge, Filipinos can do anything under the sun.
