when I was a child, I used to go with my Dad to the auction to watch him buy livestock. I would marvel not only at the auctioneers but at the farmers and ranchers who could understand him well enough to know when to bid. My Dad said it was just someting you learned after hearing it enough.

That song brings back a lot of great memories. My dad was a farmer and our entertainment was was going to farm auctions. When I was 5 years old we went to one where everything including the farm was up for sale. After being there for hours I was really tired and I tugged on my mom's dress to get her attention and asked, "When are we going home?" She gave a big sigh and said, "We are home." My dad had made a split second decision and bought the farm.

I accompanied my dad to livestock auctions when I was a wee little girl. I loved listening to the auctioneer! I loved it more when dad had horses he was selling because he would let me ride them in the auction ring to show how easy they were to ride. When we had an exceptionally big horse, dad would hand me the lead and let me take the horse into the ring to show that they were so well trained that a four yr old little girl could handle them. My dad often said that I got an extra few bucks for the horses when I rode/led them in the ring. He'd buy me a bottle of Coke as a reward on the drive home!

Leroy wrote this song while he was stationed in Korea. While not an auctioneer himself, the song was written about his cousin Ray Sims who wound up in the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame as an outstanding caller. It sounds like the genes for such a talent runs in the family.

I'm so glad you did a reaction to this one as it's one of my favorite. If you think that is fast, then I'd like to suggest Hank Snow (another icon, but a Canadian one who made his mark in the States) as he sings I've been everywhere. I still can't understand all the places he's been but you have to listen and do a reaction to it. Johnny Cash does it too, but I find Hank does it faster as you can see the speed cranking up. I've included the link with Hank singing it live but with the lyrics, so you can follow as it gets fast. kzbin.info/www/bejne/laDUq6xufbppmrM&start_radio=1 Thanks for listening and reacting to this one. Love from Canada.

I used to sing Gilbert and Sullivan with a choir, you know, the really fast patter songs, and even I can't keep up with this. Probably the only other recording artist I know of who could would be Joey Levine, the lead singer of a band called Reunion, which recordrd a single called "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)." If you don't know that one, give it a listen. If you do other country songs, you should try "One Piece at a Time" by Johnny Cash, if you don't already know it.

You remarked about the blurry image because of the age of the video. In 1962, videotape didn't exist. This is a kinescope, which was a black/white movie, usually 16mm, sometimes 35mm, of live TV broadcasts for a record of the performance as a document, not to be re-broadcast. The lighting was for TV, not film recording, but the idea was just to keep a copy of the performance, no regard for clarity or artistic merit. Your reactions are among my favorites of any reactors!
