I’ve never tried Oat Groats but am going to now ! I do make Ann Esselstyn’s savory oats and add even more variety of vegetables than she does AND truth be told I mince raw garlic in it at the end ! I use steel cut BUT now I see they’re recommending Groats ! If you haven’t watched Jane and Ann’s oatmeal cook off it’s pretty funny ! I can’t tell you how very much I’m enjoying your channel ! So glad I came across your wonderful channel! Im 63, and after abt six years going WFPB and struggling with over a decade of thyroid issues, I discovered that wheat/gluten containing products might actually disrupt my thyroid function, even though I have not tested positive for Celiac disease. Even though I get my 10k steps in daily, Ive been frustrated at my weight gains. I have consequently cut out wheat/gluten products, and low and behold, my weight finally started dropping. Thanks for all you are sharing. I love to find channels like yours with people more in my age catagory that are going WFPB for the amazing health benefits as well. 🥰

Hi C! I too was diagnosed decades ago with thyroid disruption, and then found out about six years ago that I’m gluten sensitive and cutting out all gluten grains makes a big difference. Isn’t cauliflower rice wonderful? It can be mixed in so many ways. My favorite mashed potatoes are made with cauliflower and potato and everybody loves them. There’s a video for that. Well, then I can imagine a number of places that you go in Mumbai, I used to wander the city. He lived just outside the city in.Punai (sp?) in a newly built high-rise with a lot of Expats. I would jump on a tut-tut and go all over the city. In addition, I lived for a month in Santa Cruz at the Yoga Center there. I got my teacher certification that month, but never used it because I took it for my own use, and to live in that atmosphere for a month. While there, I would hop on the train and go to the west shore. What’s interesting is that memories from India, including Deli, the Taj Mahal, Goa, and Mumbai are seared in my memory, and snipets come back as if they are in the present.💝 Is your first name Raman?

Judging from your name, I thought you might be from India. My son lived in Mumbai for three years beginning in 2010. My first grandson was born there. I spent quite a bit of time there when the baby was first born-my husband had just died-going back-and-forth, until they moved to England for three years, where they had my second grandson. What part of India did you come from? Do you go back to India to see relatives?

Hi @Nan Simonsen and @Cattitude I wanted to follow up with you and share my experience with doing overnight oat groats. I cooked up a batch of groats using Nan’s method. I had not ever tried her way of making them ( I had originally used a method by another person who makes them very soupy). So….using Nan’s method I put a cup of the cooked oats in a mason jar. I then used 3/4 cup of soy milk (obviously you can use whatever milk of your choice) I found that was actually too much milk. I may try 1/2 cup next time. What was awesome is the groats softened in the liquid but still had a nice “chew” to it. I will continue to experiment. And yes you can eat cold but I take mine to work and heat it. It’s great with chopped fresh apples. Enjoy!!

Hi Catherine, Thank you for following up and describing you experience. I’m so glad that you enjoyed your oat groats breakfast. In my breakfast bowl which is cooked with lots of soy milk for a bit over 2 minutes, when I add 2+ tablespoons of my flax/chia mix and then chopped banana, the resulting consistency is a very thick porridge which I really like. On the other hand my husband like his rather soupy. Individual taste has a lot to do with how we personalize our meals. Thanks again for sharing. The apple sounds good! 🌻🥰🌻

Question about your flax/omega mix. I saw that you grind the flax and chia together in a 2:1 ratio. If I already have ground flax seeds is the ratio still the same (I know - probably a dumb question). I like the idea of creating the mix. Right now I am not eating oats because I am testing to see if they are causing a Gi problem that I have been having. 😟

Hi Marie, actually it’s not a dumb question. When I grind flax seed it becomes fluffier so it’s volume is different. That being said, I don’t know how that would change the ratio of ground flax to unground Chia. I used to grind the flags and then add the Chia, eyeballing the ratio, as I do now,, of roughly 2:1. I grind chia with the flax now because someone whom I respect said it would digest better that way. The ratio is somewhat arbitrary. Chia has nearly as high a count of omega-3’s as flax, but I favor flax a bit more because I like the rest of its nutritional profile. Well fingers crossed that the oats are not responsible for your G.I. distress. They are used so often in whole food plant based cooking that my guess is that you would probably miss them. Good luck with that.

@@NanSimonsen thanks. I think if I ground the chia seeds i. A ratio to the already ground flax it might work out. Yes I am hoping that the oats are not the problem I snack on oat clusters as well as having steel cut oats for breakfast (and I wad going to try the oat groats next.) Hopefully in 2 weeks I will add the oats back in and things will still be Ok. I think my body somehow needed some kind of a rest.

This will be added to my list to try. I will try it with millet instead of quinoa. Riced cauliflower would be a good addition. I’ve done riced cauliflower with my oatmeal. You can’t even taste it…it blends in with the oats

@@NanSimonsen I have already tried them with the riced cauliflower. Sorry, I thought I mentioned it. I’ve tried varied ways of eating oats. My favorite is a mixture of groats and steel cut plus riced cauliflower. The trick with the riced cauliflower is you need to heat it up separately and then add it to the oats. Otherwise it smells…I use frozen riced cauliflower. For an added bonus, you can buy riced cauliflower medleys such as sweet potatoe/cauliflower or broccoli/cauliflower. It bulks up the meal and gives added nutrients (we hope) I am starting my journey with starch based diet lifestyle. So many new tastes and textures

Quick question-do you use equal amounts of flax and chia before grinding????

Good question Joan. Because flax is the highest in omega-3‘s I use more flaxseed and Chia, and then I grind them both together. I freeze the bulk of it and keep a small jar in the refrigerator that I go through within three or four days with my husband. The fat in those seeds oxidizes quickly, so I don’t let it sit too long once it’s ground. As I said, I add the hemp hearts to the ground mixture before I store it. And I use about half of the amount of hemp hearts mainly because they’re higher in omega 6 which we have an abundance of. My effort is to favor the omega-3s

Have you ever tried this cold?? After trying overnight oats, I don't ever want hot oats again!! lol. I just fell in love with them. Was just wondering if I could use the oat groats instead of rolled oats, of course I understand I'd have to cook the groats first, but then after they cooled in the fridge, could I just add the other stuff to them and eat it all cold?? Or maybe put it back in the fridge for a while to let all of the other stuff soften in the milk, as I usually like to eat my seeds and nuts in the raw state, just ground but not at all cooked. What I discovered is I do prefer them soupier. I’ve tried a few different methods. Anyhow, I’m going to try making a batch of oat groats and just scoop out a portion for an overnight batch. I think it will be fun and interesting. I’m excited to try it. I hope you do too

Yes I am going to try the groats cold the next time I make them. Just wanted Nan's opinion on what she thought. I'm almost thinking that I would have to let them sit overnight so everything has a chance to soften and soak up the flavors of whatever you put in there. I put almond milk, ground flax and chia, hemp seed, chopped walnuts, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, and raisins in mine. Then in the morning I mix the fresh fruit and berries in. They are sooo good!! You'll have to let me know how yours turns out!!😸

Hi Catitude (love your name). Good question. Yes I’ve eaten them cold. That’s how I bring the oat bowl to the airport and eat it after check-in. If I mix in some rolled oat with the oat groats and the flaxseed and then pour in the milk and let it sit overnight it thickens enough to go through TSA. The berries can be added at night or in the morning which is the way I prefer it. So yes I have, but I really love them hot so that’s what I do daily.🌻😊🌻
