Outstanding ride! METIER flies late to win the Chester Cup!

Metier finished with a flourish to claim top honours in a thrilling renewal of the tote Chester Cup.
A Grade One winner over hurdles a couple of years ago, Harry Fry’s charge successfully reverted to the Flat to lift last season’s November Handicap at Doncaster under Saffie Osborne, who was again on board.

@David Macleod 13 of the last 16 winners were drawn 11 or lower before today, so yes, it's very tough to win from stall 14. Any slight error from the jockey and its race over. The horses that finished 2nd to 7th today were all drawn in single figure stalls.

@@tomhurcombe2185 I'm not saying that stall 14 is not a hindrance- even over 2 miles. The horse bounced out and she was never more than 3 horse widths out from the rail in the early part of the race (where incidentally was better ground). The horse had plenty of cover and plenty of pace to aim it. To call this ride "outstanding" is over egging it. She was strong and got the horse up on the line.

@@tomhurcombe2185 Listen every horse has it's day. In the Chester Cup the draw means absolutely zilch. You have at least a circuit to put your horse in the position to win the race. If you were planning to win races from dodgy draws then this race would be top of the list.

Great race. Just me that thinks this years Chester meeting was the poorest level of horses we have seen running for absolute ages. OK we know AOB likes to target this meeting but you take away his runners you are left with some of the dodgiest trials and group races ever run on British soil. Having said that if I was a trainer the last thing I would have lined up is running my horse round the greyhound track that is Chester. It probably does more damage than good to a lot of horses.
