We've looked at colonizing our own solar system, from Mars to Venus, and all the way inward to the Sun itself and out to the dark edges of the Oort Cloud. In this episode we conclude the Outward Bound Series by heading to our nearest neighboring star system, Alpha Centauri, and look at the trials and tribulations of colonizing binary star systems and red dwarves.

*****Show Note: Tidal Forces Error****** Just as a heads up there is an error when we're discussing tidal effects, I mention gravity as an inverse square-force, which it ism but tidal forces tend to follow an inverse-cube effect with distance, that's fairly important in this context as for instance an object 400 times further away than another (like our Sun and Moon) would have 400³=64,000,000 times less tidal effect not 400²=160,000 effect, of course the Sun is far more than 160,000x the Moon's mass, indeed it's 27 Million times the mass and hence has almost half the effect the moon does, on Earth, but a binary 10 AU away would be further diminished another 10³ or thousandfold, so measurable but hardly the big tide generator implied here. My apologies for the error, we'll have to save an in-video correction for another relevant episode, though I'll note it as one of the reasons I try to avoid episodes this long, errors like that are more likely to slip past the radar. :)

you could also make the rings rotate slowly accelerating to the speed you want for the planet so people of all colonies can go there without feeling sick during theirvoyage,maybe have spparate rings that will acceelerate at different speeds so they can get to the gravity of the planet that will be colonize in a way they wont vomit, as seen in the expanse and their children will also vomit if you sont do this since theyre used to their ring and people can go freely to the other rings whenever they want, also giving the abilty to repurpose the colon ship as a shipyard in orbit

Thorekk You are the reason why rational discourse is slowly dying. Your skepticism is literally unmerited. Why are you questioning the validity of a wholesome story in a KZbin COMMENT?? Also I believe, Isaac Arthur is probably very popular for all age ranges. It is kind of ridiculous to assume just ‘no’. It is irrational, rude and downright a ridiculous point/argument.

The space shuttle was inspiring, but it lacks the fuel capabilities that conventional rockets do. It's difficult to admit but the shuttle failed in it's original task of lowering the cost of getting to space. It was an amazing attempt at reusability but the way NASA was operating post-apollo I am not surprised we didn't leave low earth orbit.

@abelgerli 3 жыл бұрын
@@alphatrion100 Actually the Proxima Centauri is about 4.3 or 4.2 light years away. So the fastest space probe so far will only need about 17355 years as I calculated some time ago. But 80000 to 17355 the numbers are way to big to get realistic there and every message needs 4.3 from sending to receiving it. So to get a answer you need 8.6 years that's just madness.

@@abelgerli yeah i dont EVER see us colonising other star systems without, well, MAGIC really. But dont tell star trek fans that 😉
@abelgerli
@abelgerli 3 жыл бұрын
@@alphatrion100 I totally agree but people dreaming about it without doing the math is nice but doing the homework should be done so people realise we should at first save our environment before dreaming about terraforming another planet. Even the starshot Projekt with 1g space probes for Proxima Centauri would have pumpt the energy production of the United Kingdom plus 20% into the space proble for seconds to accelerate it to 20% of the speed of light. You need the power plants for a UK to do it. With 100% efficient energy transformation into lasers to send the engergy to a 1g space probe because I'd they are not efficient enough you need way more energy than that. But the best part the engergy has to be converted by 99.999998 into acceleration and not in to heat. Because any efficiency less then that would just evaporate the 1g space probe and would not accelerate it to 20% of the speed of light. So even that's dreaming thermodynamics is the blogs man that spits into dreams because reality has to deal with real physics.

Your videos are absolutely amazing. I've been into astronomy and cosmology since I was a kid and until I found your channel, I thought I had pretty much covered every square millimeter of what KZbin has to offer over the subject, and I was worried I was out of cool space stuff to watch. You are the only other person I've run across that shares my ideas of futurism, and dreams of how our world will be thousands of years in the future. I especially loved the 'space ark' episode, since I've had a very similar idea for years and haven't even discussed it with anyone. You deserve a spot in history right next to Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan! You are a true Super Nerd thank you!!

IA has complemented The Exoplanets Channel ; subscribes to Joe Scott (whom I don't care for) and Curious Droid (whom I generally enjoy). I personally recommend Scott Manley, who does regular updates on rocketry, spaceflight and missions, and (mostly Sci-Fi) gaming.

Your videos are amazing, thank you so much for sharing them. I love your channel, it is most intersting, fascinating and forward-looking. Very few channels are like this, we need more people that look into the future based on physics and (future) human capabilities. The opportunities are endless, it is your choice whether to use them or remain a small- and simple-minded society.

Isaac, you are in the position to make something I have dreamed forever, you talked about working on a videogame a few eps back, WE need a hard sci fi game about Unity, managing its voyage, encountering and resolving problems, establish colonies etc. The potential is great.

It's actually a bit of in-joke on the Hades 9 game team, one of the easter eggs in the 'Nostalgia for Infinity' bar, but the game isn't suited for a Unity storyline and I don't really feel up to writing it, a couple of the authors who hang about here have expressed and interest in doing so and gotten my blessing, but I haven't heard any updates on it of late.

I have to say, I'm seriously impressed. You are the first person I've encountered to have proposed a plausible reason to evacuate Earth. People talk about us needing to leave earth because of pollution and/or climate change as if the things they plan to do in order to survive in space and on another planet would not work here for some reason. How can anyone imagine it would be easier to transport billions of people several light years and either terraform a completely inhospitable planet or build thousands of artificial habitats than to simply fix the comparatively minor issues with the planet we actually evolved on? Even if we eventually manage to make the Earth completely unfit for human life, it would still make far more sense to create all those artificial habitats on or near our home planet. I'm all for humanity spreading out a bit but I don't think we will need such drastic motivations to begin. The prospect of making trillions from mining and the pure adventure of it all should provide all the motivation needed.
