April 9, 2016 - Heading into the second to last game of the season, Ovechkin sat 3 goals shy of his 7th career 50-goal season. After having been out shut out by the Blues 4-0 only a few weeks earlier, the Capitals got off to a poor start against the Blues again allowing a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko just 1:15 into the game. However, Ovechkin responded with a goal on each of his next two shifts, putting him within 1 of the milestone mark. With 9:25 left in the game Ovechkin capped off the hat trick and reached 50 for the third season in a row, with the assist coming from Nicklas Backstrom, of course. The goal moved him out of a tie with several 6-time 50-goal scorers and made him just the third player to score 50 goals 7 times or more behind only Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy. The hat trick also propelled the Caps to a franchise-record 56th win of the season, and helped Braden Holtby tie Martin Brodeur's NHL-record with his 48th win of the season.
