Oven Cleaner Wheels & Volvo 240 Re-inspection!

Trying oven cleaner on my Volvo alloy wheels and taking the 240 in for a re-test (Tüv) after it recently failed on a number of points ..

Could you clarify what size tires you were running before/after?

195/70/14 before as the wheels came off a 245, now it's got the 185/70/14 🙂

@@Involvod Thanks for the info, I have a wagon which has the same Scorpio wheels and 3 mismatched tires from the previous owner, there's a lot of talk online but nothing is better than pictures/video, even if it's of the sedan!

Used the old oven cleaner truck quite few times. Don't use the the lemon type it leaves a film. True story. They did smell better tho😊

Looks great! In some (most?) States in the USA the people who do the inspection also do the repairs. So I think the incentive to find something wrong is even greater.

There are no inspections in Arizona. Only emissions tests for cars 1967 and newer. And the emissions tests are only required in certain counties.

Yes definitely could be, I knew a garage that was stricter on inspections when they needed work and more lenient when they were busy 😂

I use traffic film remover (TFR). Its £25 for 25 ltrs and needs to be diluted. Works great as a degreaser too.

I love the design of those wheels. They are quite rare on Volvos, at least in the US. They look like they are tricky to clean. Glad you got through the inspection. The German auto industry probably supports stringent inspections and costly fees since they want people to buy new cars and not keep old ones on the road.

Yeah it seems like it! Thanks, I think they look great, I would go for a set of 15" multi x rims but they are about €700 when they rarely come up for sale so for now I'm happy with these 😅

Congrats on passing the retest. I thought the UK MoT was strict but the German TUV is a whole new level. I wouldn't worry too much about the tyres if that is the original size.

Car looks awesome. I was afraid to look when you put the oven cleaner on, but it worked a treat. I like the Bilt Hamber wheel cleaner as it’s non acidic but still very effective. Anyway, great video, thanks for sharing your story 👍

The rims cleaned up great! Glad to see it finally passed and is ready for new adventures. Looking forward to future videos! I believe the inspection cost about the same here in Norway. The last few years it has become a lot more stricter and almost impossible to challenge the results. Dreading the day my 740 is due for another inspection. Because of the age, many people don't know what rules apply to it. Makes it a headache when it fails due to ignorance.

Oven Cleaner is basically Caustic Soda. Caustic Soda and Aluminium produce flammable hydrogen gas. It does not actually clean the wheels but etches the surface removing any stains. So the time left on is crucial . Some alloy wheels have a clear coat sealer on them that over time can be patchy so cleaning with Caustic Soda will appear patchy, unless all clear coat is removed first. I have also used Caustic Soda as an enamel paint remover. Mix into a paste with plain flour. Important to dissolve the Soda in water first and wait until it cools, otherwise the flour will cook and become lumpy. Gloves and eye protection a must.

I've been looking for new rubber for my 240 and it seems that any "good brand" like Michelin etc. doesn't make this size anymore. Everything is low profile and wider.

Happy you got the old girl passed. She looks pretty good. I think the new tyres look fine and can’t believe how good that oven cleaner worked on the wheels. The the costs for the test/s seem pretty steep, although at least you get 2 years. How does it work in ze Fatherland? Is that it or is there then a registration fee on top like in my state here in Oz? I just did my daily, its approx €25 for a pretty basic check (once a year on cars over 5 years old) but then there is the registration fee and the compulsory 3rd party insurance scam, sorry scheme, which blows it out to around €500 all up.

Thanks! Yeah it's every 2 years, re-registration costs probably about €20/€30-ish, road tax is almost €200 per year and insurance mandatory, I pay a few hundred per year for that

Those are the Scorpio wheels I've got on my Christine. I found them at a junkyard, super clean, unmounted, ready to go. The only things missing were the original long nuts and the center caps were so worn that I sanded them and sprayed them black. They look good, but I just finished collecting all the original nuts to put on them, and I've got 3 of the original silver caps in good shape, just waiting to find the 4th to return my wheels to the original look. Though I'm sort of a fan of the current black sprayed center caps. I did make a commitment to return Christine to as much original spec as possible. So I'll likely throw the long nuts and all four silver caps as soon as I locate that magical 4th cap. Nice job cleaning them up, I gave my junkyard set a good clean on the front lawn with that pink spray, and they came out minty. Is the German env. regulation the reason you went with oven cleaner?

I've never seen them in black before but can imagine it looks quite good! They are lovely wheels. I know what you mean it's such hard work to find the caps for all these Volvo alloys and when you do they can be so expensive

It really is! Was relieved the 740 doesn't need an inspection for another 6 months or so, but now the Mercedes needs one at some point over the next few weeks 😅

I'm not sure I think it was about 10-15 minutes, but more importantly scrubbing and rinsing together really shifted it, as the oven cleaner had softened it up
