My oven which has not been used for 5 years tripped the breaker when I started using it. Watched 3 videos including this one. Did exactly this except I didn't step the temperature up. I straight away put the temp at max, turned on the convection fan and rotisserie motor and left it on for 30 minutes. The oven worked without problem after that.

I had this problem many years ago when the oven was newly installed and hardly used. When the temperature is set too high, it will trip each time after running for about 5 to 10 mins. Because the trip do not take place immediately, one may try using your method of driving out moisture without disconnecting the ground wire. Simply set the temperature very low at start, eg 50°C or at a point which does not trip for longer than 30mins. Run it longer at each interval of say 30mins to 45mins. Then bump up by 25°C each time until it goes to max °C. I suspect it may still work if you just max at 100°C or slightly higer (above boiling point of water) The whole process will take longer but its safer. This can work only if the oven do not trip immediately after turning on. Did this before. It worked for me. Oven running good since then.

Just tried richardchee2454's method because my oven tripped out within 2 min after not using it for 12 months. Started with 50 degrees C on Fan Forced setting and gradually raised temp by 25 degrees C successfully every half hour for 2 hours without tripping. Stopped at 200 degrees C. So far, so good. Thanks.

You are the best! Saved me $160 (if that is the repair cost in 2024). My oven used a 3 pin plug instead of a wall mount switch. It makes it a lot easier for me, just remove the earth wire from the 3 pin plug and taped the earth wire outside the plug with electrical tape. So I skipped removing the oven step. SAFETY FIRST! ALWAYS. I tried heating up on 1st day, even though I able to heat up to MAX at 15min intervals, it still tripped. Realised that I only heat up the top element + fan only. Decided to try again with bottom element the next day. Tried again next day with both element + fan at 50C/15min interval until MAX. Then fix back earth wire and it works! My observation is the bottom element is the culprit with moisture. Heating only top element does not remove moisture on bottom element. Next time will heat the bottom first.

thanks for this helpful video! Followed the steps to try fixing my Smeg oven, the first time round oven tripped again after I re-earthed it, only then I realised it was on "eco" mode. Oops! Did it a second time with "fan assist" mode and now it's ok. Helped a friend try to fix their Bosch oven - learnt from my previous lesson and made sure I set to "fan mode", however, the oven tripped again after re-earthing. My guess is that Bosch's "fan mode" for this particular model only uses a heating element at the fan, and so it didn't remove moisture from the upper/lower main coils. May have to try again! Wondering if its common that some oven models have "fan mode" that don't make use of the main coils?

Why will the casing be live when you remove the earth wire?
@ThePunggolHandyMan
@ThePunggolHandyMan 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question! Usually this is indicative that the coil which is live has shorted to the case which is grounded. The RCCB detects the current from the case through the ground wire resulting in the DB trip which protects the user from an electric shock. Hence removing the ground removes the safety and the case becomes live since it is shorted.

@@ThePunggolHandyMan In your video, even after heating up the oven to max, the case was still ‘live’. Does this mean, even after drying the coils, it is still shorted to ground but just not as much for it to be detected by the RCCB?

Don't touch the oven, yes, but what are the chances the oven housing is making contact with some other appliance? Is there a chance it could be somehow shorted to a nearby sink, plumbing, etc? I know it likely shouldn't but there are some dodgy installers out there.

Tha k you for your comment! The reason I made this video is to show how it can be done safely, as there are worse videos which do not highlight the dangers of attempting this procedure. There are countless what ifs and I can't possibly cover everything in a short you tube video. As always, use your good judgement and always be safe If in doubt, get a pro.

what's the voltage of the casing when doing this method?

Why would the casing become live when ground is disconnected? Equal potential? Or because of the leakage current thats in oven?

the case goes live, but the connection to earth causes it to trip after a few microseconds. Disconnect the earth wire stops this happening. He's overriden the safety to get the oven to dry itself out@@akes4995

Thank you so much for the video. We followed your method and recommended timing for each temperature. It worked well immediately for at least 15mins at various temperature (180-210), after ground wire was reconnected. We turned off the oven and took an hour break. After the break, we turned on the oven at 180 deg c. at fan (3D hot air) position. However it tripped after 5mins. I’m wondering what might be the problem and if we should re try the process. Do you have any recommendations for this situation? Thanks in advance.

Yes please re try the process and give ample time for the dry out. However if it still does not work then you gotta call a repair man

Why disconnect the ground wire . What’s the theory ?
@ThePunggolHandyMan
@ThePunggolHandyMan Жыл бұрын
Well if there is a short to the case, there would be current flowing through the ground. The RCCB detects the difference in current and trips, as this is a condition which indicates a fault. By removing ground, the RCCB will not detect this difference in the ground wire and won't trip. This enables you to run the heating / drying cycle in the oven

The real question is, why should this be a common problem? Ovens are known to be installed internationally, US, Europe or elsewhere. Is it due to the Asian practice of installing the hot stove over the oven that somehow resulted in condensation of water droplets on the inner metallic surface of the oven, where the wiring is located?

Not really. I think it has to do with our climate

I don't recommend this. Too many things can go wrong and it's not a hundred percent fix. Going by Murphy's law, eventually someone will be killed. Sometimes it's the terminals having problem. Very risky because it's connected by hard wiring and i suggest using wago which should be a lot easier to handle. What we used to do was DISCONNECT MAIN POWER. Disconnect heating elements and check if the heating element is the issue. You can also measure the resistance from the heating element and use P=VI to know if the numbers are reasonable. We will usually buy a new part to have a more guaranteed fix or some DIYer will bake the heating element in another oven. Even so, still very risky, because if the amateur, ignorant or inexperience user forgot to disconnect the main power, it could still mean death. Best advice is not buy such a large oven that has to be hardwired unnecessary, and switch the oven on occasionally to expel the moisture

Hi! Thanks for rhe feedback! The purpose of this video is to highlight the risks with attempting this procedure as there are may videos online which show how to do it but do not demonstrate the danger. So I'm providing info that should someone want to DIY this, they should be aware of the risks involved

Well this video was shot at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. And it was government regulations to wear a mask in a client's home. As most of my videos are shot in real settings I don't want this to be Exhibit -A when I'm charged for breaking the law.

Is not moisture. Is the oil accumulated at heater area. After not using for sometime. It get accumulated. Always, clean up (including the heater element)when not in use. Also in this video, installation is clearly not compliance with safety requirement.
