Started my channel at 61 two years ago after escaping Canada for Thailand. 550 subscribers after two years so feeling like a failure, but I do random stuff that interests me with life as an expat, solar power, tiny house sea container and coffee!
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer Ай бұрын
That's not failure at all!! It really depends on what you want to do... if you like making videos about all sorts of different things then keep doing that, there's nothing wrong with it! You can always start a new channel that focuses in on one niche only if you want... but it's totally up to you :-)

Not a failure but possibly need to get your niche clear. And then everything is driven by that. Edit: just had a look, you're on your way but even the title is confusing. Is it about e-bikes? Coffee? Expats? Travel? It's not at all clear 😊

Sometimes I don't think the KZbin audience has an idea about how much effort it takes to speak to a camera fluently without a script. Your bloopers made me smile. It's the same with me! Many takes before I can get going. Good job.

I totally agree. A general audience has no idea the effort that goes into building a KZbin channel even at a hobby level. About two years ago on my other channel, I couldn't believe one of the comments were the viewer was saying how discouraged and disappointed. They are in me as they are acting like they fired me. I'm thinking? You got this all for free??

Another great video, Rob! Thanks for this! I'd also suggest for those VERY new to shooting videos - a 30-day "Talk to Camera" challenge. For close to 30 days, I recorded myself just talking to my camera about anything. It was very cool to see my growth and the more I did it, the more comfortable I became!

Watching these bloopers is really hitting home for me. 95% of my footage looks exactly like this, a sentence or two, and then just pure frustration. Great video Rob - just the inspiration an old guy like me needs to get going! I'm a woodworker and I've learned so much from many different people on KZbin. I think I would enjoy giving back to that community by sharing some of my projects and ideas. At first I thought "there's already so many woodworking channels - what could I possibly contribute that people would find interesting?". But I guess you never know what someone might find useful so perhaps I should give it a try. I'm retired so for the first time in my life, time is not such an issue. I appreciate you breaking down the basics that a person needs to get started because it now seems less intimidating. Subscribed!

For this video I just used 2 lights (well, plus the mood light behind me). I hope that helps :-)

I made a 45 minute video 2 days ago with my smartphone and just did one shot no shut off. It was also slow to send to my computer and needed a passcode from KZbin to allow. So much to learn and the time is now. I find my little digital canon camera is a great asset for these projects. Thanks again, have a great day!

You’re such an inspiration. I’m now seriously considering doing this because I already have a bunch of video content building my own commercial strength driveway and soon we will be building our own house - wish I recorded some of our process with architect now but that’s ok. I DO have 1 important reservation though: my 2 kids. I love including them in building and other things I do. But my daughter is 9 and son 15. I’m concerned about child predator types. I don’t know maybe that is a deal breaker. I want to keep them safe. Unfortunate this is such a problem out there. Have thought this so many times. Im not bad looking either so that’s the main thing I’ve worried about this whole time. I also drive my kids crazy a little with the camera all the time! Lol😂 So any thoughts about this? I do believe our experiences could be really valuable to some people to help inspire them to tackle something difficult or intimidating.
@RobtheMaritimer

That's a great question, and there's probably not one correct answer! What I would probably do in your situation is have two channels. I would keep one private for family members and that's a great way to document your family time, events, etc. Then have another channel that you create that's for you to document whatever you want to document. Then maybe once your kids become of age you can un-private that first channel? Just a thought. I haven't really looked into this but I'd probably do something like that. I hope that helps :-)

Great video, although I was slightly surprised by the things you say you need to start a YT channel. You say you need a room but I saw you making a YT video on a boat. You also say that you need a YT account, but you don't say that you need an internet provider. Also, you say that you need a computer, while there are plenty of people who do everything, including editing on their phone. Anyway, that is not really what I wanted to say. What I do want to say is that a program like Davinci Resolve, might be sort of complex, it also offers a lot of convenience. What I mean with that is that a lot can be automated or can be done in smarter ways then in most "beginner friendly" editors. A program like Davinci Resolve might do complex things but you don't have to use all of the functionality from the start. I think that after a quick basic tutorial you can do most of the elementary things in Davinci Resolve like importing your footage and other files, editing the footage, and exporting the edited movies. Those things are pretty straight forward and most people can learn that in about a day. After that Davinci Resolve will never hold you back, while the more simpler editing tools might do that. Thanks for your video and I hope to see more of your videos in the future. 👍

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel. The information you present and the encouragement you provide may inspire to start my own channel. What are your suggestions for those of us lacking self-confidence to get started (ie. shy, self-conscious about appearance, afraid of being judged or rejected, etc)?
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 15 күн бұрын
My main suggestions would be to understand that what other people think really doesn’t matter. AND the people who will comment negatively are in fact the people who have a problem. You aren’t the one with the problem. Also, being self-conscious s normal…. Just realize that t may seem strange for you to see or hear yourself in a video…. But that’s exactly how other people see you every day, when you’re out. The reality is we are our own worse critics… everyone. So just realize that everyone is thinking more about how THEY look and aren’t really concerned with how you look and sound. Does that make sense? Just some thoughts… best of luck :-)

Some of us choose to be real vulnerable on KZbin. I did with my “I didn’t enjoy being a mom” video. I got some hate, but I also got some great support. I plan on doing another follow up video and I will have better equipment. Taking a break for now until I can get that equipment in. I would also like to record in the back end of my Subaru by Lake Michigan. We shall see! Thanks for another great video. Oh, I am the same about people hearing me. I don’t like it. It freezes me up. Glad I’m not alone in that. 😂
@RobtheMaritimer

No matter what your content is about, you'll likely always get some amount of haters... it's just up to us how we handle that... and the best way IMO is to ignore them! They aren't the people you want to attract anyways, so just ignore them and don't give another thought to them. It boggles my mind that people... perfect strangers... like spending their time dishing out hate to people they do not know. They must not be very happy people! So ignore them, move on, and quite naturally you'll grow a community of people who ARE your tribe. Best of luck to you!! :-)

Your first video will be the hardest one you ever make... I promise it gets easier after the first! The main way I come up with ideas is by just listening to my viewers... they'll ask for videos in the comments and also in my live streams. I keep a running list of videos I need to make that I constantly add to, and sort... trying to find the right order to make them... but there is no right order I don't think, since people watching these are at all different stages of their journeys. If you go to my KZbin channel, the first video you should see at the top is the "Upcoming Live" thumbnail which is for Today's live stream. I usually set that up the day before (I set this one up last night, Monday). If you don't see it there, then click the "Live" menu item and that's where you can see all past live streams... and the upcoming one should be listed first. Click that, and you'll be able to get notified when I go live. Then just come back when the time comes... 1:00pm EDT... I run the live stream from here on KZbin. I hope that helps :-)

This is just my advice and I do not want you to feel as if I am trying to put you down in anyway. If anything, it is the opposite... I want you to succeed. First, let me start out by saying that you have great presence. You speak with a lot of confidence and the camera you chose for your video looks amazing. Now, for the critique... Come up with a script of what you want to talk about. It looks like you are all over the place. Also, it will help with point #2, remove the ummms, ohhhs, and andahhh. Listening to that can get the average person annoyed. Finally, have chapters on your videos. I wanted to fast forward to your other recommendations of the five things I need to start, only to be skipping randomly trying to guess where it is located on the timeline. Either case, I can see that you are dedicated and will get far if you continue.

There are video editing apps you can use on your mobile device or ipad, so no, you don't need a computer. Personally, I use a computer... but I have trouble seeing small print (need reading glasses at my age!) and so I would find it hard to edit videos on a phone. iPad would be better for me... and a computer with large monitor even better again. But if you're ok to work on a mobile device then absolutely you can :-)

Even thumbnails I think don't have to be very complicated... lately I've been going with just a couple words that support the title. Think of the video title and thumbnail as a combo... together they need to grab the attention of someone scrolling. There's no magic answer... you kind of just have to try different things :) It's not much but I hope it helps somewhat! :-)

AH!AH!🤣 Your bloopers are so hilarious🤣 Can I ask what you do when you get up? Because even before making a one-minute video I waste an average of 20 minutes😂 but I always stay still (with an idiot face😆), and start again (maybe I make some signs with my hand to recognize the starting point cut). I'm really curious (maybe turn the cam off and on again) A serious question: in your opinion is it a good idea to immediately announce, in the first videos, the target you want to address, or do you let the "style" and the way of speaking and relating act as a sort of natural selection of the target? Don't you think that immediately talking about "over 40" is counterproductive towards those who may be 30 but find themselves in a work and life situation where they would like to start over and reinvent themselves? I conclude by congratulating you on the way you relate, the way you speak, the way you film yourself and the excellent quality of your videos. You are a true example for me (alas, even an over 50!!!)💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

I'm usually in my office by 6:00am mapping out my day, responding to messages, etc... then may go for a run in the morning. I usually record myself in the afternoon or evening. But I ALWAYS keep the camera recording even during my mistakes... mainly because it's a pain to stop and start every time and that generates a lot of files since I often record my audio and video separately and sync them later. So just record once and then I can always edit out the mistakes later, if I want... or save them for bloopers :-) IMO I wouldn't necessarily announce what your channel is going to be about... because the reality is that the exact niche you end up speaking to may change in time. I think it's better to start off by introducing YOURSELF and say something like what all your interests are and the types of videos you THINK you're going to make and if interested, subscribe and you may like what I have to say... something like that! And thank you for the kind words! I hope you find this helpful :-)
