It’s amazing what a seamstress can do for the fit of a garment. If you have things in your closet that you aren’t wearing try them on and using Cathy’s advice decide if you can salvage them. It’s amazing what raising a hemline or tapering a sleeve can do. If you don’t sew,buy a roll of fusible hem tape.

i am a petite apple too! i hadn't realised we had a "category". My problem with plus size clothes is the assumption that all plus size women have large breasts, and the necklines are so wide & so low cut that I cannot wear them without a camisole underneath.

@@pamelabird1570 I order Goddess underwire bras. Amazon often has some on sale. I need 44G. A couple of years ago, I needed 40J, but my fat has shifted with aging. (Thank you, nature). I recently discovered another brand on Amazon that, in one style, is perfect. Delimira underwire unlined minimizer. It isn't problematic like other minimizer bras I've tried; I love this one and it's about $25. I don't think of it as a minimizer at all. The fabric doesn't make me itch, either, which is often a problem for me with synthetic fabrics.

I agree about the proper bra!! I suggest going to a place that will fit you correctly, personally I go to Lane Bryant or Catherine's. I've found that over the years my girls had kind of slipped toward the side. If you get the correct bra to fit your bust type it makes all the difference!! Thanks again Cathy for all your videos. All good points. One overlooked and free way to look at least 5 pounds thinner is simply to straighten up with really good posture like the military, stomach in/chest out (with proper bra)/shoulders back/chin in. Easier said than done, of course.

Brava for your bra "hack"! Some young women can pull off the braless look, and there are women of all ages who will say something about "comfortable" or "I don't care what others think" - we know, you do you. But for the majority of us who DO care, a well-fitting bra not only takes off pounds visually, it also takes off years. A bra that fits properly IS comfortable, a bra should never be otherwise.

Nordstrom does free bra fittings. I try to go during the anniversary sale in August. The ladies are very helpful in recommending which brands work best. 😊

I agree with you whole heartily, except the flowers, Love them! Our body shape is in the minority, and companies want to make products for the majority, so we get left out a lot of times. What I have a problem with is horizontal stripes... Why would they make them for anyone?

For most of my life I've been petite with an apple shaped torso, and swinging between plus-sized and just below plus-sized, so I've known all of these struggles. Now I'm in my fifties, but I'm no longer plus-sized (lost the weight for necessary health reasons.) Kind of annoying that I'm STILL apple-shaped though - not anything like I was, but it's still obvious that's the place where my spare fat goes if it goes anywhere. All through losing the weight I've had to get rid of favourite clothes and adjust my thinking about what to buy for replacements, and this video has actually been really helpful, so thank you for that.

I carry a shorthandled purse because of my neck and shoulder issues. It is large but quite flat , so it doesn't add bulk to my appearance. The large size bag does balance my body size . I keep very little in it to avoid hurting my shoulder. I love a coloured purse to add colour to my very simple ( mostly black wardrobe)

Great tips Cathy! I started wearing long cardigans too. Love them. I no longer wear black. I read a fashion article that said not everyone looks good in black, and there is a neutral for each of us. I wear navy or grey now and both colors look so much better on me now as my skin tone has changed in my older age! I no longer wear jeans, sweat pants, or bulky pants, only leggings with long cardigans, tunic tops or dresses. I'm petite and find these looks slimming and elongating. Oh my, I lost 2 inches having spinal surgery. I have morphed out, in, over, my belly is big now, maybe my organs are all squished in……Seriously, surgery gone wrong 4 times. Excited about more content like this. My figure has always been thick waisted, so I feel your pain about getting things that fit. Also, petite. Another issue. Love skirts and dresses, but sometimes the styles I like are too long. I can alter clothing, but often the hem or garment is not structured so this is easy. Am going to be sad when it gets too hot in Texas for the long cardigan.!! Agree that wrap dresses are flattering. I see pics of people wearing dresses with casual footwear, so maybe I can do that instead of thinking I need heels with dresses.

Hi, Cathy. I can't agree more regarding what is available for those of us who are petite and plus. I'm thankful for Talbots clothing, but would love to branch out to different looks. I just spent a whole afternoon of looking at plus size clothing for an occasion I have to attend and it's really disappointing. I really wonder who they consult or what size fit model they use. I just wish they would provide us with more petite choices, beautiful fabrics, non-see-through white blouses, and pretty florals. I know that's alot to ask for! I've just found your channel and I'm pretty much in love with all the advice, and I hope that it's not out of line to thank you for it by offering some in return. I find that if I think of my body as having "problem areas," or needing to "camouflage" or "conceal" or "hide," using those phrases reinforces the shame that society likes to engender in people with large and/or round bodies. I made a decision about ten years ago that I was going to ADORE my big body, out of sheer self-defense against the malice that thin people want to put on me. I started with words, because words are a big deal and influence thought processes. So now when I'm looking for clothing, I swap out words and phrases born of fatphobia and instead use words and phrases born of, and strengthening, self esteem. Phrases I refuse to use: conceal, hide, camouflage, problem areas, de-emphasize [something I don't like] I use instead: flatter, showcase, highlight, emphasize, honor display [something I do like] So instead of "How can I hide what I hate about my body (which used to be all of it)," I can now ask myself "How can I create focus on what I love about my body (which is now all of it)?"
