They were allowed to write home, but if they tried to tell their parents about any of the shit they were going through, they would be punished and forced to rewrite the letter. If you look at profile picture, it shows monument valley, the Navajo nation. Last year, I took a trip down Utah to see monument valley and a tour guide who is Native American told us about her experiences at those schools alongside how the US military tried to forcefully find other Native Americans in the Navajo nation to be drafted for WW2. She explained to us how they would hide in canyons, communicate through whistling, and worn moccasins to hide their footprints. At the end of our tour, I shook her hand and told her that she not just a survivor, she’s an overcomer and I respect her fighting for those who didn’t have a voice.

One of the most famous Canadian stories of this is the orange shirt. To summarize, The Orange Shirt story tells the story of young Phyllis Webstad having her orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school and never seeing it again. The story is unfortunate, Phyllis is still alive to this day. We wear Orange on September 30th every year, to support reconciliation and commit to the enduring truth, that EVERY CHILD MATTERS.

As a Tkemlups Indian Band member, with the Kamloops Indian Residential School on our reserve, there was no escape from it. Even when students did escape, they often became lost and passed on, we call them "Le Estcwicwéy̓", the missing, in reference to the fact that many will forget, but we won't. They will live in our hearts.

As a Christian and Canadian, we learn about this a lot and it’s very sad to hear about how our country had treated the indigenous. One thing, from what I’ve heard, the government wasn’t intentionally going to hurt the children and they wanted to convert the children. It was actually the school system (or the priests and nuns) who decided to do so. The religion mainly in charge were the Roman Catholics, The Angelicans, and Presbyterians. (My knowledge is going to use now, thanks school)

Many children tried to escape. They would often end up dying of exposure en route. They were taken so far away, there'd be little chance for them to navigate the way back. Children went missing a lot. Even if they somehow managed to get home, the Indian Agent or RCMP would come to collect them and force them right back. Every family's worst nightmare and it kept going well into the 1990's. Resistance, however, is carved into the walls and the posts of the camps... er, "schools". "Misuse is Abuse" is a series of work by Cree artist Ruth Cuthand about the crazy-making shit they drilled into student's heads. Is your human dignity as important as or less than that of the integrity of a school issued pencil or an eraser? Would you enjoy living in a society where this has been and continues to be a serious line of questioning? Honestly, I think that series is so fuckin punk rock and I hope more people see it.

😢 i rarely smiled again after years of school which taught me about life and interacting with jerks , i never wanted to learn to read nor learn about mathematics , i know you do not need school to know how to make money , just be around someone who knows how and save on years of school fee etcetera

My parents were from different villages in Alaska . They both learned English the hard way in school . They both got beatings and were forced to eat soap .
