This video is made under the assumption that you've seen both of my Classic Sonic Story videos, so check those out if you haven't and you have a lot of free time.
Originally I was going to put this in the the Origins review. But I figured it'd be better to split it since this is a totally different kind of thing.
Hope you like listening to me ramble about nothing important for 20 minutes.
Also, I'm not in love with the current thing that they do with Classic Sonic where no one talks. I get why they do it, but I'm not a fan. In this case though it works because of how little time there is to work with. Dialogue would just slow things down.

i think instead of the cyan emerald going to west side island, it should have been there in the first place, being the reason the other emeralds went to west side island

That was always my personal headcanon. After Sonic used the six emeralds, they were "summoned" to join the missing one. Which also allows both islands to be known for having Chaos Emeralds.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but the Flicky in the S3&K ending cutscene looks identical to the one that was freed from the Moto Bug in the Sonic 1 intro cutscene. I like to think they’re the same Flicky getting “revenge” on Robotnik for trapping them in the Moto Bug.

The city in the final cutscene looked like a nod to eggmanland from the sonic OVA. Maybe it was just a random scene, but it definitely gave me those vibes

It’s supposed to represent the 3 scrapped sonic 2 zones. Dusthill Wood and Cyber City. Cyber city wasn’t really what the level would actually look like but I like the interpretation

I also found this very strange for the case of Amy. Be treated as a main character when you literally have 2 minutes of screen time.. I would've loved to see a non-canon Amy DLC, but I guess we can forget about that.

The Launch Trailer had a part that says "New Playable Characters" when it's on the Digital Deluxe screen. Although, that may be referring to things like playing as Tails & Knuckles in Sonic 1 or Tails in Sonic CD instead of a future update/cut content.

I mean if we can't play as Knuckles in CD, Amy would have been a perfect alternative, maybe in DLC, maybe unlockable through a certain time in time attack like the sound test, what my point is is that Amy in Cd would have made sense with the whole "3 playable characters" thing for each game

The marketing and cutscenes certainly made it seem like Amy would be playable. I was quite disappointed that she wasn't.

I have a feeling that Amy was supposed to be playable as a unlockable character, but since it's SEGA we are talking about, everything was rushed and Amy got removed

I had a similar but different thought. I noticed that in the last cutscenes specifically, we see locations that are not in the classic games and, of course, Amy, whose mallet is shown to crush spikes - something that could be a very specific ability like Mighty’s ability to bounce on spikes. It almost felt like the intro to another game, like Sonic Mania. Which I couldn’t help but think about the possibility of this being a hint or a proof of concept of a new classic Sonic game. Of course it’s not, and just because Stealth has worked on Sonic 3 here doesn’t mean there’s plans with him in the future, but I can’t help but wondering

@@sarcasm-aplenty this game is more worthy of $40 than Sonic Forces ever was. Probably be more worth the $40 than Sonic Frontiers too, and that’s going to be a shiny, new, probably full price game

One minor issue I have with the Origins ending cutscene is that the emblem for the Eggman Empire uses its modern goggled-Eggman design, rather than the "EG" hexagonal emblem from Sonic 2, or the emblem from Sonic Adventure with its goggle-less design. Just a bit jarring to me to see modern Eggman stuff in this classic context

This is my “theory”: Eggman was doing a design change and he was testing out if the new emblem looked good on his things, but he wasn’t sure so he still had the “EG” and the Sonic Adventure goggle-less design. Kind of like a prototype

@@maude7420 I agree. Stuff like Adventure 1's flashbacks, Pocket Adventure's modern title screen but classic in-game sprites and Episode Metal all make it seem like both designs were just interchangeable but Generations took it way too literally imo.

I've mentioned this somewhere else, but I find it highly appropriate that everything ends with a Flicky popping Eggy's float... I'm sure this was not the intention, but it's almost a wink at the fact that _3D Blast/Flickie's Island_ was technically the next mainline game

They could've done a bit more with the cutscenes, but overall they're very well done and a highlight of Origins. Nice vid man. Edit: Looking back I feel like we missed out on a lot of iconic moments in the classic games, like Tails saving Sonic after he falls from the Death Egg, Mecha Sonic harnessing the Master Emerald, Sonic going Hyper, etc. Kinda disappointing

the fact that tails' bullies have the same color palette as his 'murican incarnation in the cartoons of that period, aosth and satam, is a cute nod. one thing about that cutscene that i thought about, because adventure one is where i started and that game is very dear to me, is how it doesn't really retcon tails' flashback in that game, since y'know it was just a dream, it doesn't feel like it undermines adventure one for the sake of genesis nostalgia like that one cutscene in forces. not to mention, little planet's position relative to angel island gives me the impression that sonic cd's intro might be taking place in or close to mystic ruins which i think is interesting, it might explain why the enviroment is a lot more realistic and less stylistic or fantastical like what we see in south, westside and angel island. and yes i agree humans and sonic-ish animal people living together should be a standard from here on, in fact the late rebooted archie comics under ian flynn had an interesting interpretation of that, pretending that all sonic games and cartoons are set in the same world by passing them through a filter, which i found to be pretty neat.

I enjoyed the Reboot Fused-World of Mobians and Humans across continuities (to the point some humans are references to X) approach as well. It feels more united. Odd how Spinball wasn't in Origins with some new animation of certain cameos.

Yup, I definitely agree. I really enjoyed the cutscenes for at least finally throwing the original Japanese manuals a bone here and there, but there definitely was some retroactive “Post - Adventure era” retconing for these scenes when you really deep dive into them. For one thing, Sonic 1’s South Island is what it is _because_ of the 6 chaos emeralds. It stays afloat and drifting around the world because its _own_ set of emeralds allows it so. If you take them away…. well then South Island stops drifting in the sea… and we know that its still drifting even as far as Sonic Adventure 2 shows. Sonic 2’s West Island _has its own separate set of Chaos Emeralds, which just so happens to be 7_ . Also, this is the same case for Sonic 3’s Angel Island. They ALSO have their own set of emeralds, and Origins S3&k cutscenes make that more apparent than they realize. Eggman explaining to Knuckles that Sonic and Tails took the Chaos Emeralds In the same Hidden Palace Zone that Knuckles was ALREADY in before Sonic and Tails even got to Angel Island shows that. There’s _already_ an emerald altair there, but why would that be the cause then if we are to believe these islands lasted within the same universe the entire time in the same Classic Era? Sonic 2’s ending - Sonic 3’s beginning happened within moments when Eggman’s Death Egg crashed on Angel Island… yet there was already an emerald altair. It just goes to show that the “Super Emeralds” (“Super” emeralds to us players / Sonic, Tails and Eggman. Regular “Chaos Emeralds” to Knuckles and Angel Island inhabitants) were always Angel Islands own set of Chaos Emeralds where as Sonic just simply _brought_ over West Islands own set of emeralds to Angel Island. Another thing about the post adventure retcon is just Amy herself. I get what you mean about Amy feeling retroactively added as the “main squad”. She shouldn’t have those qualities yet in this period because she herself has admited that she was mainly a damsel in distress that needed Sonic’s help in Sonic Adventure…. And yet here in Origins, she’s already kicking ass with Knuckles and the rest. Her character arc shouldnt have came up yet for her to do these things with such confidence, especially with the guys, particularly Sonic, ALREADY seeing her as a competent part of the trio, so thats why it feels out of place right now. But yea, just wanted to share how I felt on the matter. Like I said before, these cutscenes are still fucking immaculate lol. Its just little nitpicks for me here and there. Great video tho. Im glad we have people like you showcasing the nitty gritty of Sonic shit 😁

I kind of figured that maybe South Island moved either due to some kind of weird magical quality or its six emeralds had just been there for a long time. Westside Island, I guessed, just had the last one there because it was moved at some point or was lost. Then with Angel Island, my guess was that the altar is specifically for the Master Emerald and that someone would gather the emeralds and bring them there so everything is in one place or to neutralize their power. But you're right though. Even if we assume that there are only seven emeralds on the earth, that makes 3's intro cutscene make less sense. Sonic and Tails run off with the emeralds on Angel Island when the previous ones show that Sonic had them as Super Sonic? Maybe the assumption is that Sonic and Tails were going to use them for evil and not that the emeralds were on Angel Island? I always assumed that there were only seven emeralds and there differing appearances were because Sega didn't care much. It's assumed the Master Emerald can change size so why not appearance for the normal emeralds as well? And when you gathered all seven of them together, they would disperse like the Dragon Balls. Sonic already took inspiration from the series and Star Wars anyway. What's another allusion to DB? I know Origins doesn't definitively answer everything but I do appreciate Sega trying to add more context and explain things a little more. They probably did mean for there to be multiple sets of emeralds at first and then it was retconned with Adventure. Or they didn't care much about that. Which I suppose having there only being seven makes sense to make them more like the Dragon Balls. Otherwise, they're fairly common like some kinds of stones or gems or geodes, and then any maniac could harness them. Gather them up and then they disperse. Or you can gather them and have them at the altar on Angel Island I guess.

​@@grawman67 I think Sonic X had them disperse like Dragon Balls, now that you mention it. I dunno, it's been awhile since I've seen Sonic X. Though, the fact that Sonic can repeatedly use them in gameplay to turn Super kinda punches a hole in that being a game-canon thing. Well, unless we go with the idea that Sonic using them in regular gameplay is just a non-canon thing, but I kinda hate that notion. Frankly, I like the idea that the ending cutscene of Sonic 1 in Origins implies: The Chaos Emeralds have some sort of consciousness or will of their own, and disperse whenever and to wherever they please. Which explains why they have to be regathered so often later on in the series. That sort of "chaotic" nature to them suits their title well.

@@LupinticDream I think you're right but I haven't watched X in a long time. I like the idea of them having a chaotic nature too. Whether it be a will or consciousness or just an implied one. Like they act differently at different times for whatever reason. It really does make them "Chaos" Emeralds at that point. I'm curious if Sega goes into more detail on these things with Frontiers or the new show. That would be cool to get a little more info on the world and how it works

Tbh I hated the last cutscene when I first saw it because of Amy. I seriously love Amy, she's my favourite character of the franchise but SEGA teases her Classic version way too much for no reason because *she isn't playable* I wouldn't mind if she was just standing there with the Tarot cards while watching the trio running around but seeing her *in action* makes you think she's part of the game wich is not true. If she was an unlockable character for when you finish the Story Mode then that could be so cool and it could actually feel like she is part of the team but just like Mania she keeps being just "the girl" of the group... :/

The addition of the vision the emeralds show Sonic of Westside at the end of 1 makes Origins putting CD before 2 outright bizarre. I mean, what's Sonic doing fucking around at Never Lake after being shown something so obviously significant as the chaos emeralds giving him a vision? Sonic is absolutely the kind of guy to investigate that, and as we see in CD's end cutscene, he does follow up on it, but for one reason or another he just felt like taking a detour. Amy also doing a tarot reading of Sonic going to Westside also, if this weren't retro-actively placed in, would make it seem odd that she isn't in Sonic 2, herself, since she'd obviously still be interested in chasing after Sonic. It's minor stuff like this on top of the omissions of actually important plot details that leave me kind of mixed about these new cutscenes.

One of my favorite theories I've heard is the idea that Amy secretly has magical/psychic abilities of foresight. Physically she's a normal person, but she has the ability to get hints at the future, but she doesn't even realize it. And that's why the tarot cards actually worked. What Amy assumed was a fortune reading was actually just her abilities kicking in, and that's why she always just seems to find Sonic no matter what. She just coincidentally shows up at the right place at the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) time.

Fun fact: the archie comics kind of explain the chaos emerald retcon. There were originally hundreds of chaos emeralds until they were all sealed into an alternate dimension where a panda God fused them together until there were only seven.

I love how in the recent Sonic Origins speed strat video they rub in "No Sonic CD is before Sonic 2 silly" but then the in game cutscenes clearly set up Sonic 1 to Sonic 2 and the Sonic CD cutscenes set up nothing to relation to any game

If anything having Sonic CD in between 1 and 2 is a bit awkward now. Sonic has the vision of Westside Island and a 7th Chaos Emerald that he didn't collect, and he just shrugs it off? It really makes more sense for CD to be after 3 & Knuckles, since it has no connection to the other games and Metal Sonic is clearly the most advanced Sonic robot.

i loved that they played the main theme of Mania at the end of the ending cutscene. Feels like they are subtly connecting mania to the classics

5:10 I recall in the continuity of early Archie Sonic, there were more than seven emeralds (hundreds, even) until Ian Flynn became head writer and wrote in an event that merged all the emeralds together into only seven. Kinda funny that now, he's sort of doing the same with the early game continuity by settling on the idea that there were always only seven emeralds (Ian was involved in scripting the cutscenes for Origins). Of course, I'm fine with this, since I'm a big supporter of there only being one singular (somewhat cohesive) timeline for the game universe, and committing to that concept would make stuff such as aligning details in the older titles with the newer titles a bit of a necessity. Some may feel different (in the first place, I thought it was sort of debatable at best on there being more than seven emeralds in the Genesis titles), but that's just me. Anyways, fun video, I've been enjoying hearing your takes on this funny blue rat as of late.

I've (finally) seen your lore video about the Classic Sonic games earlier today, and since I knew about the Amy cards and Tails being bullied things (alongside most other things), I was really waiting to see someone, who knows basically everything, talk about those cutscenes. This is going to be a great watch!

I always thought that something happening to Knuckles’ set of emeralds was the super emeralds turning gray and that’s partly why he takes Sonic’s set of corresponding colored regular chaos emeralds. It just so happens that, possibly alluding to Sonic’s prophesied importance that through the adventure he happens to fix them

"Work was not in the cards" Heh. Pretty much took all the words out of my mouth pretty much on every level. Only thing I guess I would add is that Eggman's collar is interpreted very much like a cape in these animations. Also, while I get the reason why they had Eggman crash into Hidden palace, (which doesn't line up with the manual but whatever) it doesn't really make sense with the actual game wither since Launch Base sure as heck ain't on LaunchBase. I GUESS Eggman himself just fell at Hidden Palace while the Death Egg itself is in the woods where Launch Base gets built? I guess? Can't lie about the transition between the CD cutscenes but hey whatcha gonna do. Overall, I was tickled pink watching these animations and find myself looking at them multiple times jus6t for kicks! EDIT: Oh right! Forgot. Another menti0on goes to the fact Eggman's logo is already in the cliffside, so that implies Eggman was already set up, Amy saw him chain Little Planet and do his thing, and she went up across the chain I suppose.

i think the reason it was interpreted as a cape was because thats what the intention was in japan. best example is that the Bad ending of CD implies the same thing as well

Another thing about the menu is the ruins you can see near the edge of the screen on the CD island/continent. I think maybe that's supposed to be Sylvania Castle from Sonic 4, since that game is meant to take place near and around Little Planet/Never Lake. The shapes of the structures in both are very similar at least.

Amy treatment just appears to be a side effect of her Modern incarnation influence. Metal Sonic doesnt even have that huge focus in the cutscenes.

The original games make it very clear that there are way more than seven Chaos Emeralds, each of the islands have a different set and the mystical properties of those places are due to the effect the emeralds cause in them. A playable Amy would’ve been nice but hard to pull off. In Mania that would be better.

With the Chaos Emeralds I think it’s less about explaining them getting from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2 but more them getting from Sonic 1 - Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The final game shows the prophecy of Super/Hyper Sonic fighting Robotnik and we already know that the emeralds from 3 & Knuckles are the same as in 2 so it creates a wider arc leading Sonic to get all seven emeralds on Westside Island and then the Super Emeralds in 3 & Knuckles. I think it’s a nice touch and I always believed when I was younger that the emeralds were the same. The inconsistent colours/shape of the emeralds also doesn’t bother me as it was so early in the series where they were still developing the characters and world. Good to look into it but I think some things are just very straightforward.

I thought that sonic 1 ending cutscene was like the emeralds telling him there was another. He hadn't collected enough to go super sonic. I think they were still trying out designs in the early games and the emerald look they have in the present was cemented by sonic x, the super emeralds and to make them look more like the master emerald

I gotta say that this is a great video man! Your analysis of these cutscenes along with your Classic Sonic Story videos are what I would to help show new comers to the series how the events from Sonic 1-3&K follow to the games that come after. Just one minor gripe and something I wanted to correct you on, the part of the video that goes over the scene of Tails getting bullied on West Side Island is how its always been unclear how humans and anthropomorphic animals co-exist since the adventure games. Even though it was never stated in the manuals, it still doesn't completely go against the flow of logic established in the classic games. In the Japanese manuals, It is established that the games take place on earth. In the Japanese manual to Sonic 1, it establishes that South Island moves around earth. You also have the fact that in the classic games, Eggman is established as a human that exists in Sonics world. These are details are connections you can make between games like SA1, SA2, Shadow, 06 (if you count that as canon), & Unleashed showcasing humans and anthropomorphic animals co-existing on earth and the Japanese manuals of the classic games. Aside from that, great work man!

I know humans and animals have always co-existed in Sonic. If you look at certain details there are things in the Classic games that hint at that. But it is definitely unclear, considering how many people have always found it odd that in SA1 the series suddenly "takes place in the real world". That confusion would not exist if they were more clear about how this world is set up. You know what I mean?

Plus, Sonic & friends could've gotten to a place populated by humans from south island moving around. See the connection I've made? 15:48 My one nitpick with this scene is that it sorta shows the wrong machine in the background. It should be the Egg Bomber since that was the last mech Eggman used before Sonic defeated him. The escape shuttle would be long gone in space. Really I just wanted to see my favourite boss animated.

I noticed that in the last cutscenes specifically, we see locations that are not in the classic games and, of course, Amy, whose mallet is shown to crush spikes - something that could be a very specific ability like Mighty’s ability to bounce on spikes. It almost felt like the intro to another game, like Sonic Mania. Which I couldn’t help but think about the possibility of this being a hint or a proof of concept of a new classic Sonic game. They’ve done that sort of thing with Sonic Mania/Forces even. Of course it’s not that, and just because Stealth has worked on Sonic 3 here doesn’t mean there’s plans with him in the future, but I can’t help but wondering

My interpretation of the vision of the emeralds is not that they are moving to West Side Island, but more so a message to let Sonic know that the seventh one is there. After these classic games, the emeralds seemed obtainable from special stages in various places around the world (unless each modern game is restricted to a specific landmass, which doesn’t seem to be the case), so I can’t imagine the emeralds are only obtainable from specific islands.

When they announced cutscenes, I thought they would do transition cutscenes for every zone. I was disappointed that it didn't happen but I still like the cutscenes we got! Also, I kinda wanna bet that there was a plan to make her playable in the CD port but Sega didn't allow the lads at Headcanon to do it

Also, Sega seems to have a thing against female characters in Sonic games taking the spotlight in any way; for example, one of their mandates dictates that only male characters can go super with the Chaos Emeralds (apparently Ian Flynn wanted to do something with that but Sega didn't allow it).

@TrainerblueTube 1. Implementation of the drop dash would've taken little to no effort to begin with. These games were rebuilt in the same engine as mania, so adding that feature was probably as simple as a line of code. I believe they had even already been added to that sega ages version on the switch. Adding new characters doesn't count at all in that instance, once again that was in mania. What was a whole new game, not a complication of old games. And to go even further, you said new characters but what new characters? From the looks of it, Sega just meant putting knuckles in Sonic 1. I doubt there will be dlc to add something, because why would they put it as a feature in the trailers if it was for upcoming dlc? Furthermore, Sega doesn't have a good track record of providing substantial dlc for sonic games in the first place.

Actually i just realized that Sa1 Is both the first of case a human civilization and an animal civilization with the echidna tribe. While we know how the echidnas died, i always found it odd how animals tend to live on the outskirts of the world like islands and swamps, despite having simlar intelligence to humans. Beyond Amy and Rouge, there seems to be this unspoken separation between animals and humans.

I think Sonic 1's ending kind of explains why the Chaos Emeralds don't really do anything in the first game. There was one missing, and Sonic would have to travel to the other island to find it. I don't know about Sonic having the Tornado before he meets Tails. I always thought that Tails built the Tornado, and that's why he's shown to be a mechanic and inventor. Maybe I didn't get that from the games themselves, and it was part of the UK comics or something.

In the lore the tornado is Sonic’s plane which he did have prior to sonic 2, my guess is he may have given tails the plane as a gift later because tails is the more tech savvy one and sonic would prefer standing on top and enjoying the breeze

As with other videos of yours, I agree and disagree. Personally, I appreciate the idea to try and harness the Chaos Emeralds to their modern current lore. This game is for newcomers and younger kids to get into Sonic so they wanna give them the right lore to keep up with the series. So in regards to that, I appreciate Origins' approach. I have issues with nearly every cutscene but CD unfortunately. Sonic 1's intro isn't that big a deal, but in the manual, like you said, South Island mattered because Eggman came for the Emeralds( and it was also the first time he used Animals for Badniks-that was a shock to Sonic and made him take things a bit more seriously than portrayed here. Whatever, no biggie. The Emeralds showing Sonic a vision is pure new fanfiction, and while I've seen the take that it's bad because it ruins the randomness of Sonic travelling to the islands (and Eggman following him there), I don't mind because it's neat enough. The Sonic CD Amy intro is neat, and I take it because it matches up the manual (she did her reading near Never Lake, so technically she's still GOING to Little Planet). I find the timeframe of Eggman's face on the mountain weird, because the manual made it a big deal that his face was there because he had already taken Little Planet and mechanized it and chained it, and we see with Amy it wasn't there yet, but I guess Eggman was already there. No biggie. CD's ending scene too, no issues, harmless stuff. Sonic 2 is where I start to have big problems. In the manual, Tails' bullying was a backstory element. It was not something that happened in real time, it was something that had already happened to him. Though I don't really care for the bully OCs, I don't have a problem with wanting to show Tails getting bullied, but it should've been flashback material. This isn't how Sonic and Tails meet. Sonic doesn't save Tails from bullies. And when Tails runs after Sonic, Sonic doesn't smile and goad him to keep up, he looks at him sideways and figures that Tails can do what he wants. As you said, the stuff with the Tornado was completely gone. Eggman bombing the island to cause Sonic to race in the action (and Tails behind him)? Gone. And I know some people may say that it's just an abridged summation of manual events that shouldn't be taken as hard fact, but to that I say it's still going to affect mainstream consumption of how Sonic and Tails met, and sand down the edges of their original meeting. I just wonder, what was so hard about accurately following the manual where they could? This isn't Chaos Emerald stuff that gets contradicted by Modern, this is stuff that had an easy blueprint laid out by the manual and was disregarded for no apparent reason. The same leads into Sonic 3. I don't have an issue like you with the Knuckles/Emerald seen because I respect the intent to bring things closer to how they are now, but Eggman and Knuckles' meeting is completely botched. Gone is any nuance about the "legendary egg that will hatch a dragon" that Knuckles feared. In the manual Eggman told Knuckles he came to investigate that egg. In Origins they make shit up about Eggman pretending to be the protector of Animals against Sonic. In the manual Eggman told Knuckles Sonic was coming for the Emeralds-I understand that can't be maintained, but why not just... change that to be about the Master Emerald? It gets the exact same point across. Another point, Eggman does not land in Hidden Palace immediately and roll out of his robot and meet Knuckles. Eggman already escaped from the Death Egg before it fell, and once on Angel Island built a base and made Badniks and his weather machine before even meeting Knuckles, whom he met in the FOREST. The kicker? The Taxman port actually hints towards this. Eggman in the ending where the Death Egg crashes is scene stomping angrily near a bush while Knuckles watches him from the bush. The port was able to respect this with spritework but the cutscenes don't bother. I'm not a monster, so I'm happy to say I have no issues with the ending cutscenes of 3&K with Eggman. Lastly, the budget. I'm not gonna lie, that ending cutscene with the group/Amy is completely pointless and I would legitimately cut that out. That's such a waste of budget imo. If we're getting some new classic game starring the 4 then maybe it'll be justified, but as it stands now that time and money could've gone to the current cutscenes we had. Why not adapt Sonic finding the engraved ring and Tails picking up chaos energy on his radar in between 2 and 3? Why not spread some love and give us cutscenes that establish a timeframe between Sonic's story and Knuckles' later story with Mecha Sonic? It's egregious that neither Super Sonic nor Mecha/Super Mecha Sonic make it to any cutscene but so much time is spent for Amy who they didn't even bother making playable. Why not instead of our current ending cutscene, imply other existing classic games like Labyrinth or Blast or 3D Blast in a flash forwards of events? Or hell even Mania itself, complete with Mighty and Ray teases? Tails Adventure is basically tossed out at this point too and that was supposed to be pre-Sonic 2-not that I would imply it's hard canon, but stuff like Sonic 2's intro making Tails learn to fly in 2 really kills anything a game like TA could've provided. I know I may come off here as nitpicky and obsessed and caring too much but it just really grinds my gears when the manuals were there and they seemingly didn't care for most of it and just made shit up instead. I hesitate to blame Ian Flynn because I obviously don't know the internal circumstances, how much control he had or if he was told to do certain things, etc, but if it his fault, Sega is to blame for letting this through, and if it's not his fault, then it's squarely on Sega, as is the rest of this shoddy experience that we're supposed to believe is the definitive Classic Sonic collection.

I totally get your issues. But as I said, they had a budget. They could only make about 5 minutes of stuff. So with that kind of limitation, a lot of stuff just needed to get cut or abridged. The Sonic 2 stuff, yeah the bullying is a backstory and Sonic doesn't save Tails, etc. But with a 40 second long cutscene, you have to make changes to fit all those ideas in there. I would have loved a longer more faithful adaptation of the manuals. But that was never going to happen here, and I expected that going in. The face on the mountain is a good catch. That's probably an error. I'm also fine with going with the modern version of the Emeralds. Just wanted to point out that it is likely a retcon. In retrospect, I probably would have opted to cut the opening and ending and use those to flesh out the main scenes more. But I still like what we got. But if they didn't do it for you, that's totally fair.

Sonic Origins lacked budget, time and ambition. They could have even hired old voice actors such as Jaleel White to voice Sonic because they have quite a few lines in the manual. This game could have easily included every single game from the Classic Dimension in chronological order with cutscenes of the manuals, with a few changes to correct plot holes.

I wouldnt blame Ian flynn at all, what makes you think he has that much sway in Sega? the developers say as much, that it was Sega that rushed to meet a stupid deadline. Also animations like this are made very early on, so they likely were told from the beginning, by Sega, what time they had, and what to actually animate. also with Ian working on frontiers, how much time did he really have to work on origins? especially with the short amount of cutscenes. it's more likely that these were finished, or at the very least nearing completion by the time of the first trailer. also Sega mandates

"And when Tails runs after Sonic, Sonic doesn't smile and goad him to keep up, he looks at him sideways and figures that Tails can do what he wants" The way I interpreted it was Sonic smiles and winks to say "yeah you're cool you can come with me" and (I completely missed it when I first watched it and only saw it when watching the animatic in the museum) right at the end after going through the loop it looks like Sonic turns round, jumps up and cheers when he sees Tails flying. But I agree, I thought the intro for Sonic 2 was way too short. I wanted more of these beautiful animations but I'm happy with what we got. We do have Sonic X for the "proper" meeting with the tornado.

I mean, the chaos emerald shape and color would be a similar argument as to ask why characters now have different eye color. It was just a design choice and eventually since stuff was all over they place they just tried to piece it all together with the current "canon", happens all the time on media, especially when it just started, that's why in Pokémon anime season 1 you can see some real life animals here and there for example.

It seems that the covers and full soundtracks for Sonic Spinball, Sonic 3D Blast and Knuckle's Chaotix are included alongside Sonic 1, CD, 2 and 3&K, the museum and mission islands are from Spinball and 3D Blast (Flickie's Island) Suggesting the games were going to be included but cut New playable charactes were advertised in a previous trailer yet all the characters are the same ones from the remasters that these are ports of and all the characters from Sonic 3 & Knuckles were already in Sonic 3 & Knuckles Amy and Metal are heavily promoted in this collection and Amy running alongside the main cast in the final animation with her hammer seems like she was meant to be a playable character as well

Using the level select in Sonic 1 allows you the option to select a 7th optional special stage with it's own chaos emerald (under max emeralds) which allows you to play super sonic in the game You can also select to play as Sonic & Tails which was an option from the mobile version Sonic CD has a hidden option where you can change the soundtrack version from american to japanese as like the 2011 remaster Using Circle on playstation, B on xbox and A or B on nintendo you can skip the animated cutscenes

No games were ever "cut" from this collection, since there was no way they were porting all of those old games. They have music and art from those games because it's a celebration of core classic Sonic, and nothing more. The "new playable characters" thing is just them advertising Tails and Knuckles to Sonic 1/2/CD, and nothing more. They are technically "new" to those games, even though we've been playing these ports with the "new" characters since 2013. All it is misleading advertising. (And shit, Knuckles isnt even new to Sonic 2. That was done back when Sonic and Knuckles came out.) You can debate if Amy was meant to be playable or not, but personally I don't think she ever was. Although it wouldve been cool, and even cooler if they could backport Mighty and Ray into these games

@@laneplain107 animations for media stuff, if the animation isn't the main point, usually are made way early in the development process of most projects. so Amy being very prevalent as a main character in the ending cutscene kinda makes me think she was floated around as a playable character early on. also porting 3d blast, chaotix, and spinball all would justify that 45$ asking price. they also didn't do anything special to Port over 1,2,and CD, these are just the mobile remakes put into the collection. 3 and knuckles was also very rushed, and the team asked for more time. If Sega was a good company theyd give the proper time to the project, nevermind porting other games to make it more worth it.

I think along with having eggman see energy readings for the chaos emeralds on South Island at the intro, having him reappear for the ending of sonic 1 (maybe coming out of some wreckage), he could spot sonic interacting with the Emeralds and realizing what they are, and pulling up plans for his Death Egg to set up Sonic 2. I know Eggman never needed the emeralds to power up his death egg, we can see that in 2 and 3&K, but I don't think it's a stretch to assume that having them would be significant enhancements, and if you really want to stretch it maybe he knows of their existence/capabilities from his grandfather's diary.

Would've liked it if they also included cutscenes for sonic escaping the death egg and tails picking him up on the biplane or the climax at the end of sonic 3&k when Eggman is defeated in space (it could also serve as a reward for getting the good ending). Though as it is I think these are great and I'm sure it would've probably been hard for the animators to add more scenes to their pipeline. Since I'm sure they were under a strict deadline.

Nice detail about the islands is they change as you play the games. Angel island in particular changes the most when you start Angel Island is in the ocean and the Death Egg is on launch base, at the halfway point the Death Egg is in the volcano above Lava Reef Zone, and when you finish the game the Death Egg is gone and Angel Island is floating above the clouds again. Little Planet will also no longer be chained to the mountain and will be gone by the end of Sonic CD.

Fun Fact: In the first episode of TailsTube, a series of shorts on the Sonic KZbin Channel, a still of West Side Island from the Sonic 2 intro cutscene was used 3 months before the game released

I always thought the Chaos Emeralds were in fact EMERALDS of different colours like tourmaline can be different colours depending of the amount of different elements in their crystaline lattice. I also thought they were shaped flat (as an emerald is) like some of these candies that look like Mentos but are fruit flavoured and more hexagonal. But then suddenly the Chaos Emeralds become "diamonds" in Sonic 3 and well, inconsistencies about their shape and naming survived until today. It didn't help they added the Super Emeralds and the Master Emerald being in reality a Master Diamond, surrounded by more crystals, and all the old plot of Knuckles and his relationship with them went down the gutter by Sonic Adventure. And yes, it's sad they surely are going to plan to add Amy as DLC because they need to add her Pico-Pico hammer as attack and she can't go very fast either so she'll be a character with a different play style and included separatedly for those interested into her "slow" jarring style. PS: If they make her as fast as the rest of the crew, I'm going to scream ad infinitum.....

Regarding Origins and the emerald theory, I think it should be noted one of the pieces of concept art shows hidden palace with just the Master Emerald alter, no place for the Chaos Emeralds

a little note:in the sonic encyclo-speed-ia it states that that west side island is another resting place for the chaos emeralds which implies that the emeralds travel between different islands where they reside also in other video you said that they could reestructured the canon of the games to keep consistency but actually in the encyclo-speed-ia, a book published way before origins it was already stated that sonic cd was before sonic 2

Honestly, for the Sonic 1 cutscene, just having Eggman have a thought bubble of his badniks + special rings = emeralds or something like that as we pan to the guy would probably be enough.

I think that Amy goes to little planet for the same reason as sonic because the planet only appears once a year and it's pretty and, well, near little planet (never lake) she reads the tarot cards and that's why the "you're in the wrong place and at the wrong time"

Great vid man! Just subbed after seeing this and a few of your other videos. Anyway, a few "over-analyzy" thoughts: That ending cutscene shows off three areas: a desert, which is next to a jungle, and an unrelated city area. The desert doesn't seem to be any zone in particular - a seemingly common theme in Sonic cutscenes and ads, like Team Sonic's opening in Sonic Heroes and this old Japanese ad: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6GnYX2pqZaEmJY . It could be Mirage Saloon or Sandopolis, I suppose, but neither of these levels' distinctive hallmarks appear here, like cacti or pyramids. Well, hoodoos maybe. What fascinates me most though is the jungle area. It's shown to have both Monkey Dudes and RhinoBots, both enemies from Angel Island Zone - even the mountains in the background call to mind the US Sonic 3 box art, which features, of course, AIZ. Obviously this is far from anything definitive - Eggman has reused and upgraded old Badnik designs before, and there are more jungles in Sonic than just AIZ - but I find it really interesting that they show Amy actively destroying Badniks in the ending cutscene alongside Knuckles. If this *is* AIZ, maybe she really was mooted as a bonus playable character early on in development? Of course, the ending cutscene is probably just there to tie things up neatly and imply further adventures lie ahead, but I find it fun to speculate nevertheless. I also really appreciate the little nods and references included, like Sonic landing on Knuckles' head, presumably a nod to the OVA. It's probably just coincidence, but Sonic 1's opening cutscene reminded me a little of the first page of Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, with Sonic saving an animal from, of course, a Motobug. If you happen to read this, can I find your thoughts on the Sonic 1 story manga anywhere? It's a fascinating little piece of very early Sonic media that I feel doesn't get talked about enough. Obviously it isn't canon, what with it featuring prototype elements such as Sonic's band and bandmates and a joke backstory for Dr Eggman, but little things like "Sparkling Zone" featuring its early background and "Star Land Zone" being called, well, *that*, are pretty cool to see. I also like that the animal friends are shown to talk to Sonic, rather than the odd not-quite-animal-people they've kind of ended up as. Anyway, long ramble over - I look forward to more of your videos! It's great to see someone really talk in depth about these games.

The Sonic 1 manga is interesting. Seems it was made with notes from older versions of the story, considering Sonic's band is there, even if he isn't saving them specifically. I also found the humans shown in it interesting, as that is something never seen in the games. Obviously, the story is nothing to write home about. It's clearly just a marketing material to introduce Sonic to people, even if the details are a bit different than the actual game. And it is clearly targeting a very young child audience. But it certainly is a neat curio for people interested in the classic stories.

Actually, there is one thing I disagree with you on. In the final cut scene of Sonic CD, with Amy's second tarot card reading I read that in a more general view of her foretelling that Sonic would meet both Tails and Knuckles and that the four of them would become a group of friends. The first two cards quite explicitly show a group of friends and Tails' twin tails, but the last one with the emerald is a bit trickier because it could just mean that yes, in Sonic 2 Sonic finds the Emeralds again and turns into Super but it could also (and that's what I'm leaning towards) represent Knuckles. So, in this case, she lets Sonic go knowing that he has some other 'fated encounters' ahead of him and when they will eventually reunite it will be as a team of four (4 is the number of people in the card) which is actually what we see happening in the final animation. I feel it ties everything together a bit more nicely. Also, I don't know you, but I feel like this gives the entire story a bit of a cooler edge to it because it implies that all four of them were meant by destiny to end up together and why they are together in most continuities. That and it kinda buffs up a bit her capacities of clearvoiance. Off course this is just speculation based on these animations because it isn't actually written anywhere else that this is the case but I decided to headcanon it this way

I understand your point tho, till forces they forgot about all of that, or hell, even human characters. Btw love your content, I hope you keep it up as long as you enjoy it

Legit prior to the game releasing I was starting that I would LOVE if they made amy playable in just sonic cd because it wouldn’t make sense to have knuckles in that game and not her. She could play like how modders put Amy in sonic 1 2 and 3 or you can even have her play like sonic advance but without the special moves.

I like to belive that the last animation for origins is a preview for the next classic sonic game, and the reason they act like amy is so important because she will be playable in the next game. Will this be true? Most probably not. Do i want it to happen? Oh, you can bet i do

So the emeralds looking differently may be due to the side of the emerald that we’re seeing. Top view in one game, side view in another

It's a shame the team couldn't get a delay on the game because if they did they could add more maybe a mode with Amy where she plays like sonic advanced giving her a reason to be in all the cutscenes or create maybe a side mode that does connect to the cannon like mania.

i kinda appreciate the wide variety of locales in Sonic’s world. i don’t think it’s unbelievable we could have more realistic environments (think CD intro) in the same world as South Island, Westside etc deffo wish we got more stuff for the pre-2 cutscene as well…maybe a longer amount of time with sonic and tails running around emerald hill, or maybe some scenes of tails tinkering with the tornado! also super wish we got a scene of sonic sitting on the beach prior to 3K, when the waves wash up that mysterious ring mentioned in the manuals oh! while I’m still here, I always figured that CD’s little peninsula was a little offshoot of Sonic’s “Pacific Coast”, but a little farther south than Emerald Coast or SF from SA2…maybe closer to somewhere like San Diego. i really don’t think the geography of his world is all too different from our own…just kind of an amplified version of ours
