This is not the dangerous part of overclockong, but setting voltages higher on cpus, combined with not enough cooling can kill one, or reduce lifespan

It’ll usually still throttle if it’s any good, I would be more worried about your motherboard. If you have a cheap cooler your system will crash, if you have a cheap motherboard it’ll still run like a fucktard until it blows its capacitors

It makes sense it would be slower, but I wonder how much a generation changes it. Like, if I had a fx-7xxx and it needed to OC by .25mhz to equal an fx-8xxx cpu. I know there would be fluctuations and changes to each Gen, but I wonder if there is a normal level that the new Gen improves over the old one.

You can also just let your computer fail to boot three times and it’ll automatically boot into the UEFI with default settings, you don’t need to tear apart your computer to pull out the CMOS battery. Some motherboards will also have buttons to reset the UEFI or jumpers if it’s meant for overclocking. Some expensive MSI motherboards or the like will also have tweaking features in the OS for overclocking that will allow u to make changes on the fly and show instability before your system crashes so no repetitive rebooting needed

My heart when you removed the battery and touched bare components of the motherboard. Maybe if you overclock won't kill your hardware, but short circuit things with the battery will kill them (unless you've already removed the power supply when you removed the battery)
