Why does J/88 have its jib up too? What situation would the job+Asym be beneficial?
@danweyant707

It would have helped pull the bow down if they sheeted it in. Leaving a head sail up in breeze is common

Yes, and I have seen VERY experienced crews bin it badly. Stuff goes wrong that you can't see at this distance on a video. Jams, tangles, hurt crew etc, etc... don't be too judgy!

What is everyones deal about “too much sail up”. This boat is a race boat competing in a race. If you ain’t pushing you ain’t winning. I have sailed a j/111 in 22-28 knots of Wind with the biggest kite We had at the time 135 sqm. This was just on the limit, but most of the time We were planing 18 knots of boat speed. We broached once like these guys, but that is what happens when you are pushing and We just Got the boat back on the right course and went of planing again. I have had similar conditions on a j/80 to with both jib and kite up planing again 18 knots of boat speed. Only this time We didnt broach. So in conclusion: maybe they caught the j/88 at a bad time the Crew wasnt experienced enough or something Else went wrong, but i wouldnt say they had to much sail up.

The J 88 has no clue what he’s doing a full main, a J2, and ‘asymmetric. Is he’s trying to do test whole top hull speed?
@zedthehun
@zedthehun 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, well. 1. The boat will plane, hull speed is a non issue. 2. Keeping a headsail up in heavy air can help with broach recovery. Dump the main & kite and sheet on the headsail. You need to get more experience before you get this critical.

I know nothing about sailing - so I can't understand why that boat is heeled over so severely when his sails seem mostly empty and he can't seem to develop any power. Having that jib flailing around out front like that just seems like obstinate optimism.

1. When the boat loses speed in a broach, any pressure in the spinnaker (and there is quite a bit) is applied at the mast head with max leverage = max heel. 2. The jib is the tool that will save them, they need sail area low down ahead of the mast to pull the bow in the direction (lower) that they are trying to steer. 3. The answer is dump the main (vang, sheet & traveller off) and dump the kite then sheet the headsail on. 4. They seem to have had an issue fully unloading the mainsail, anything could have been wrong there, jammed sheet, knot etc...
@HeatherSpoonheim
@HeatherSpoonheim 7 ай бұрын
@@zedthehun Thank you for that explanation. I think that I followed it, but I know that I did not fully understand. If I got anything out of it it's that that big spinnaker shouldn't be out there until they've already set course and gotten everything else lined up.

If the skipper could have taken a course a little more downwind, he would have been able to start sprinting with this sail set, but the water seemed shallow, so he probably couldn't.
@Thomas-dp8eb
@Thomas-dp8eb Жыл бұрын
If you look at the rudder, he is trying to bear away but the boat is broaching as soon as they fill the asym, smaller kite or a reef in the main to reduce weather helm would make things a lot easier and allow them to hold a course down wind

@@zedthehun the main couldn't be dumped any further, should have blown the spin, sheeted the main all the way in and then it would have stopped the broaching and allowed for the main to be reefed.

It's not really that strong Wind - they just had to sail a little lower..... just like the Swiss boat did in the background (and without problems) I guess, it's just the american way to try to run your heads through a Wall.... 😁😂😂 Take it from a dane, who lives on an small island - and have been sailing all his life 😁🤣

Taking down the jenker and reefing the mainsail by 1 point is just right. . In this condition, I think that one point reef is essential when leaving the harbor. Is it Skipper's misjudgment to relentlessly try to run with Geneker?
